What are your (minimum) expectations for GTA4's sandbox engine?

More of a breathing living world. The Generic same npcs kinda took the feeling out of me personally seing a bunch of peoeple walking around with the same shirt/pants.? No thanks

Speaking of which, I hope Rockstar can come up with some way to elimate cutscenes all together, and replace them with dynamic sequences that occur during gameplay. Nothing takes you out of the "sandbox" more than removing control from the player.

NOT IN GTA!!!

I love the cutscenes in GTA. Especially Vice City. .

As long as it looks like Saint's Row and plays like Crackdown and keeps that GTA innovation and charm with a great story and cast, than R* and I are cool.

But bring back Samuel L. Jackson!

"See ya 'round, Carl. Like a doughnut!"
"This is a weapon, Officer Pulaski, that was used to gun down a police officer not ten minutes ago. Officer Pendelbury. A fine man, I might add. You work FAST, nigga!"
"That's DRUUUG money!"

I don't think anyone would complain if he played another character.

Blasphemy.

I've not been all that impressed with Saint's Row. It's gotta top Crackdown to blow me away. The freedom in that game is just whoa. 3 more weeks!

Wow, I just noticed that I already made a very similar post on the first page of postings. I guess I know what I want. :lol

And I happen to agree with both of your posts.

No user customizations, I'm playing a GTA game, Im killing everyone and dealing in nefarious trades.

Not dressing up Barbie as a gangsta fo.

I hated that feature in GTA:SA and it made me spend a day in the gym just getting it over with.

I just want really good CPU AI, GTA had horrific CPU AI, SR was a little better, but it made up a for it a little with the hilarity of dialog.

I have an idea.

How about they make a world that is a front end for all of their (potential) other games?

Let's say the render Vice City in HD, right? Now give me Tony Hawk-like abilities and a scoring system with a separate selection screen on the front end. Then give me a NFS-like type game (with all the cars and parts and shit) with the appropriate scoring. Hmm...what else? Obviously they could include a story mode (GTAish stuff is fine). You could put in some Sims/Mii stuff for the women/non-gamers (and populate your worlds with your sims/miis). It would be fun to kill them, too.

Then all you have to do is license your front end city that you have rendered in HD, throw the whole thing online, then make shitloads off of all the mini-games and full-games that other devs make around a real-time, fullly populated, online mega-city.

BLAMMO

Other than better graphics and a locked 30fps…

DESTRUCATBLE ENVIRONMENTS!

Also: diverging storyline, give the player a sense of freedom over the plot, even if it’s minimal like in the SMT games.

I dont care, just aslong as it has a stable framerate. It could just be San Andreas in HD for all I care.

are you crazy?? for that just buy yourself a wii. i am expecting Crackdown graphics or better.

Must be able to render 20+ T-rex sized dinosaurs on the moon with moon buildings, self-shadowing, and locked 30fps.

My request on page one was "a better aiming system, like Saints Row's," but I want to change my request to moon buildings now. Moon buildings! Gimme!

I'd like to be able to turn around 360 degrees without all the cars and peds phasing in and out of existence. This might be slightly excusable on the PS2 but it drove me to distraction on the PC port. i.e. some kind of persistent state to the environment and people in it.

Its ****ing table tennis with 2 people, GTA is a huge open world with a bunch of shit going on at once, GTA IV will not look as good as table tennis

My money says it will be close.

This has no doubt been mentioned around the thread already but here's my laundry list:

* Stylized graphics. Get away (pun not intended) from the moral consequences by actually having graphics that look like the cover art. I'd hate for GTA to go into uncanny valley. GTA's satire would go well with a cartoony look, it's not like there aren't satirical cartoons.

* A combat engine with a mix of Gears of War and Crackdown. Third-person movement and context-sensitive action (mostly hiding behind stuff), some kind of lock-on and targetting body parts, with AI added to this so you can actually shoot someone in the leg or arm and have them give up. I dunno, mercy points.

* Physics, physics. Havok or equivalent needs to be in there. I'm having so much fun in Crackdown, it sure feels like what GTA should be. Only problem is how to make full use of it without the superheroic exaggerations.

* Scaled-down flying. I was thrilled to be able to fly in Vice City, once I got to San Andreas I was mostly bored. This could be improved by a Crackdown-like draw distance and make up for the lack of super powers, but I'd prefer to keep it down to earth. I mean, Grand Theft Auto and not Grand Theft Aero.

I want what most everyone here wants.

- Better shooting system. Aim assist like Crackdown and Scarface would be perfect.
- More lively AI for the NPC's
- I want the NPC's that are driving cars to react more realistically. I can't recall how many times I have been driving and had a NPC car drive into me (on coming traffic) when there was no reason for them to come over to my side of the road. Likewise the cars I'm following always drive like morons too.
- I want the cops to pay attention to people other then me. I hate how I can be in a shootout with mutliple enemies and the cops always show up and just start shooting at me. They'll be standing next to the enemies helping them. Ugh.

But the thing I enjoy the most in GTA games is collecting all the cars. I'm serious. I hope they put in the car collecting missions like they had in GTAIII. Those were so much fun.

One thing I hate in all these sorts of games is the cheap deaths.

I hate suddenly being surrounded by ten guys with uzis who just rip me into pieces before I move a few feet. Then it's bam, I'm in front of the hospital and i have to start the mission over.

R*TT was a beautiful game. GTA4 probably not so much., but hey. We all don't play GTA games for graphics anyway. I expect it too look 2x better than SR though.

At the very minimum, I expect the ability to walk up to any ping-pong table and be able to play a full game.

I was beaten to this joke, wasn't I?

I want to be able to have at least fourty burning cars and hundreds of corpses at my feet as I laugh and get an erection to the torturous murder of innocent men women and children, their blood bile and entrails an erotic soup that paints the asphalt.

They also should have animals in the game. Like bunnies.

I still want a big, sprawling countryside, but a few more points of interest dispersed throughout. Caves and barns full of goodies and campers and Sasquatches and whatever.

This was done on purpose I think. The liberty city survivor game show was adverted on the radio quite a bit. Just like a criminal can appear and jack your car, sometimes people driving like maniacs show up as well.

i want more missions, i always thought there were never enough missions in GTA. Id love huge sprawling, totally optional sidequests, not just doing hits on the payphone but full blown missions.
I have always been saying forever it would be nice if they had generic npcs who can give you an unlimited number of missions all over the game world. The missions are what really make you feel like you have a purpose in the world. It felt sad in VC when I was done with the assets and didn't feel like collecting any packages so I just had nothing left to do after beating the main plot.

.........hot coffee or not, GTA needs real mod support! A real sdk with some fun user toolsets. It would be nice to see some real models and more stable total conversions without ruining your installation for some half-working skin pack. I also hope since GTA is going multiplatform from the start it won't almost be a year before the pc version is out.

Oh yea, there should also be a real-time clock. No more of this 1 minute = 1 hour stuff.

That would suck. Some people would only see the daytime or nightime in the game. That's what I hate about WoW.

True story. I always think my PS3's XMB looks like poopz, because it's black all night (is there a way to customize it?). Real time clock is lame - but nothing wrong with mission specific time of day.

Would actually be cool and weird to see totally deserted streets at 4am tho.

I'm actually looking forward to some of the technical leaps in GTA more than the graphics. Like the possibility with the Rockstar / Euphoria deal that GTA4 might use the Indy motion technology? Stuff like that, I want to see a lot more of in the next GTA more than the graphics. To me, GTA was as realistic as it was not because of the visuals (which were never that spectacular, although I actually found San Andreas to be quite nice looking as a sandbox game with great character animation), but because everything had the feel of being real.

Obviously, I want it to look nice, but I was playing that PSP game a while back and forgot all the physics stuff they have, like how cars lean and bounce, how everything in the world is physical instead of baked in. I want to see that develop. I want to see lights that you can break (shades of PS1 ... why'd that die, I loved shooting out lights!) to change the dynamics of a gunfight. I want to see fog from teargas fill room after room as I try to find safe harbor. I want to see somebody's drink slosh around as they stumble down the street. I want to shoot out bottles in a bar or nightclub and have the alcohol spilled actually able to be ignited. I want to see buildings destroyed if I earn enough to buy a bomb, and I want to see it re-erected over the course of gameplay. I want to walk around and have people start to recognize me from me almost running them over or from them killing their dog, and I want faces to be clear and varied enough that I actually recognize people on the street that I've almost killed (before I finally kill them, of course.) I want to see intersections as crowded as a real city street.

It's that kind of evolution that I'm looking forward to as the game progresses. Shiny and sharp is great, but I might not mind if it just found a high-res medium of the current graphic style (well, maybe not, I hated the look of Crackdown and Saint's Row and so I think visual design will really matter in making GTA look great as well) if everything about the physics and the attention to detail were brought to a never-before-seen level the way GTA3 did in its time.

I know this might be a bit off topic but what is the main dev platform for GTA? PS3 or X360? And which one will have more content, or will they be equal?

My head will explode if just three of these things come about. I'm trying to keep my expectations low. The two things that would completely blow me away- go into any room in any building, and fully destructible environment. I doubt we'll get either. Probably a huge leap though in terms of buildings you can enter- i want to go into a hotel, bust into some guys room, shoot him and then snipe people in the building across the street.

Yeah, fewer places off-limits to the player (hopefully it won't impact loading though, maybe dynamic room-arranging could be possible) and more of a lived-in, shot-up feel, I would like that as well.

one feature I would really like them to include is the ability to use the microphone as a "GPS" when you're in a car and have it mark on your map the matches to, say for instance, the nearest Ammunation.

It has been confirmed for 360 as well, correct? Maybe even XBL co-op...

Visually, there's no reason why this game won't look like Test Drive: Unlimited at the very least. That's what I'm hoping for.

After watching some vids of TableTennis I'm pretty psyched about fabric physics- the clothes look really realistic in that game. I'm expecting that to carry over to GTA4. Even more than graphics though, I want a cool style- I'm expecting a sleeker, more refined version of the "cartoon-like" graphics of SA. I'm sure whatever they do will blow me away.

more density of, complexity of, and overall greater number of NPCs. the game could be the same overall size as SA and i would be perfectly happy, provided they could increase the density and ai of NPCs.
