• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

What are your predictions for Sony's Feb. 20th announcement?

To be honest I do expect a longer game section at this one since the industry will actually support the PS4 unlike the Vita.
Completely agree. They have invited the investors as well, so we can expect some third-party announcements too, and a longer game section.

Actually yeah, as someone else said if the system has BC it will probably be announced here. They'll probably say something along the lines of...

"Don't worry about buying tons of stuff on the PSN, because it'll all be usable on your shiny new PS4."

A lot of people are apprehensive about supporting digital purchases that may not carry over. Sony announcing BC might drive sales up on existing PSN content.

I think it would be the other way around since Microsoft is not going to abandon what is working for them.

Sony is going to get up there is spend 30 minutes talking about their vision of playstation, and then show 10 minute reel of games in development with another 10 minutes focusing on 1or 2 titles.

This is going to be big, Sony has a lot riding on PS Orbis...I doubt it will be a rushed, mediocre event. But a focus on 1 or 2 big title sounds about right, a tease for E3 basically.

Obviously a new console announcement coupled with a tech demo trailer akin to the shenanigan levels of the Killzone 2 tech demo reel.

And then the internet will explode in a glorious blaze of heated discussions of whether it was real or not.

Name me all the PlayStation Meetings that didn't focus on new hardware.

I didn't even know there was a Playstation Meeting before this. I guess the January one where Vita was revealed was one? A vita revision/relaunch is a new hardware. A gaikai ecosystem is arguably more important to playstation's future than a new hardware.

COD Logo
Dev Logo showing "support"
Square Trolling with support on stage. and giggles about Versus

Also. sony won't announce a price until E3. TGS? no. E3 is where it's going to be at.

It's the PS4. Don't worry about pr shenanigans.

- Kaz said they would let MS show their hand first. MS is definitely not announcing prior to February 20th
- Sony has 3 big 1st party games still coming for PS3 (TLOU, GOWA, Beyond) with GOW less than a month after Feb 20th and TLOU less than 3 months after it. A PS4 announcement would undoubtedly negatively effect the sales of those games.

There's a lot of wiggle room in Kaz's comments, in terms of who he considers competition and what he considers giving them time to react. An announcement now is perfectly safe by his logic if he's gunning for Nintendo's top spot and/or if the Durango is set in stone, both of which are likely.

I don't think that the PS4 announcement would hurt, say, GOWA. Did PS3 hurt GOW2?

I don't know about you but specs are the most interesting part of a console reveal because it provides a context for potential.
I don't understand that stuff, so it's just very slow and bland slide shows to me. And ultimately not helpful ones. Sony told me many times that the PS3 was this incredible machine that destroyed the 360, and yeah, the very best games look a little better, but they made it sound astronomical.

This would be a bad decision. If it really is better than Durango, and MS have to announce after them, MS either have to own up to a less powerful system, or they have to completely ignore specs, like Nintendo, and say they don't really matter, which would make them look weaker.

As boring as it is, Sony will talk about specs.

As true as this might be, I'm still thinking they might hold out for one of the larger trade shows (GDC/E3) to actually reveal specifics on the system. At most, I see either the power jump or something like "Will feature a next gen custom CPU and GPU."

The main advantage they do have right now to release is even though MS hasn't announced, their hardware is about to ramp up into full production.

They've had two prior ones.

2011 for the Vita.

2005 for the PS3's launch plans.

They don't use them for revisions.

No. PlayStation meetings have always been reserved to show brand new hardware, as in breaking ground on a new ecosystem. If it isn't PS4 they are breaking the tradition.

-Ps3 titles coming late in its life
-Vita
-Graph showing bars, graphs and lines

And then Jack will come out and say Ps4 will be at E3 and walk off stage trolling everyone, that would be so awesome.

Anyone willing to take any bets?(i hope this isn't against the rules?) I would almost be willing to bet my account if this IS a ps4 announcement and it doesn't go like this.

I would definitely be willing to change my avatar to whatever of anyone choosing, and Vise versa. We have to lay down the ground rules though.

I think people are going to be disapointed by the lack of details and information revealed.

Heres my PREDICTION:

-PS4 anouncement with concept images. in right bottom hand corner it will say "subject to change"

-Speech about there overall direction for the console and what they think it means for the industry.

-very very basic details of the device.

"See you at E3!" on the last slide. THE END

This will close out the very end of the meeting. It will be preceeded by trailers and info for GoW: A, Beyond: Two Souls(which will get a release date), and The Last of Us. Sales updates for PS3 and Vita, AND pricedrops for both. OH almost forgot, a couple sizzle reals throw in showing Vita and PS3 software for good measure.

BAM

I would have thought we'll just see firsty party games that have been in the works for a while ... PD must have something new to show!

the system.

a dualshock 3 with a 4 on it. or maybe a dualshock with a screen.

announcement for sequel to a popular series. like uncharted 4.

y'know... nothing too great. dont get hyped, cant be disappointed.

Yeah they have to talk specs. Durango will have Kinect 2.0. Sony has to let you know it has the most powerful hardware.

BAM

No one wants to bet. Fuck.

I expect tech specs, a few first party game announcements (no trailers, not even CG), and some sort of PSN overhaul announcement.

No one wants to bet. Fuck.

Thats fine. I'm just extremely confident if this is a hardware announcement it couldn't go any other way. lol. Just thought it may have been a fun suggestion.

I should probably go back and watch videos of the one where they announced Vita. Are there any available online? I'm sure they don't allow press to be video recording inside these things.

I mean I'm sure you'll nail one or two of the things listed.

BAM

I see you are shitting up this thread with the same ban bet tripe as the other thread, where you posted the same post twice already.

-PS4 Announcement
-Prototype Hardware
-Prototype Controller
-Live demo of one game
-Announcement of devs/pubs on board
-Very little to no views of the actual OS

I imagine it will be like the January 2011 meeting for the Vita. Hardware unveiled, a few titles shown, some vague announcements, but otherwise not much solid info.

i didnt know it was ban tripe(also why i asked), and I also didn't know a thread for predictions had already been posted. the other thread is moving at about a page a minute FYI.

1: Console name
2: No release date
3: No Price
4: A slide of with a bunch of third party developer names on it showing support
5. An amazing looking GT6 promo
6. A very choppy/hard to decipher Uncharted promo
7. A hint at "new ways to control the system"
8. Giant enemy crabs
9. At least 2 pie charts
10. The phrase "this is actual gameplay"

This meeting is getting pretty hyped up by Sony, so I'm predicting we will get quite a lot.

- The system itself
- Specs
- Maybe controller
- Few trailers of upcoming games.
- Coming 2013 worldwide, but not more specific than that.

No info on BC or price.

Don't let me post in this thread

Go on, just one more post...

I guess I must work myself up into a frenzy but at one level or another Sony's conferences have seemingly always disappointed. I know I'm probably being unfair... but with this one I defy them to disappoint me.
