What are your top 3 genres?

RPG - I love leveling up and just the sense of going on an adventure.

Action - mostly from ace combat, since that's my favorite series of all time, but I love games with a lot of stuff going on that you can just sit back and enjoy.

Racing - I've always loved cars, so it just kinda worked out.

1. Simulation (It's broad, but flight/racing/other) although I could argue maybe it isn't really fitting because the most played games the last 7 years are flight and fps "sims".
2. RPG
3. FPS

In thinking about the games I liked, I realized that that many of my once favorite series have gotten so stale to the point where I am not particularly looking forward in buying future installments. I denoted those games with an *.

Action RPG
I like the sense of exploration and building up your character to be able to take on ever increasingly difficult enemies. I also like more variety of attacks that these games offer over straight shooting. A good story can be the cherry on top of great gameplay to put this category over the top for me.
  • Mass Effect
  • Diablo
  • Shadow of Mordor
  • Dragon Age*

RTS
This continues my theme of liking to build up and prepare for attack. The thing I like best about RTS is the sense of story that each match creates. After playing each match it is almost as much fun to discuss what happened as it is to play another. Coop against bots with friends is nothing but pure joy for me. RTSs also have a unique enjoyment of watching certain units destroy their opponents. I get that from Trolls and Ents in BFME, or the Collossus and deployed Siege Tank in Star Craft II.
  • Battle of Middle Earth
  • Star Craft
  • Halo Wars

Campaign Shooter
Not really making a distinction between first and third person. I like the directness of shooting which is in direct contrast to why I like the magic in Action RPGs. These games give me the feeling that it is me doing the action and not by proxy. Although honestly I probably like this category most as another way to deliver a coop experience
  • Battlefield*
  • Call of Duty*
  • Halo*
  • Gears of War*
  • Bioshock

It's really hard for me to pick just three categories since I've had games in other genres that I've absolutly loved. Notable mentions involve Arcade Racing, Arcade Sports, Arcade Flying, Fighting...

Hmm... maybe at this point it'd easier to say what I don't like. I don't like Puzzle, Narrative only, or most Japanese games.

1. Rhythm/Music: I cannot express the feeling of satisfaction I get when a game allows me to experience music of a level that only video games can. It's right in between creating music and listening to music. I'm not creative enough to make my own music, but playing games like DJMAX or Rock Band let me ME be an important element of a song.

2. RPG: Two of my favorite things a video game can have are level up systems and a intriguing story. I like having a motivation beyond the typical arcade-style high score.

3. Racing: The thrill of overtaking someone in the final corner of a race is great. I love arcade and sim racers alike. I tend to like car based racers rather than motorcycle or something else. I can get burned out on one type easily though so I'll switch from Forza Horizon to Grid to Blur to Sonic All Stars and keep going. I use racers as my secondary game, the game to play when I need a break from the 50 hour RPG I'm tackling.

Special Mention, Visual Novel/Adventure: As I said earlier, I love stories. Games like Heavy Rain, LA Noire, Hotel Dusk, Steins;Gate, etc. are perfect for me. Even if it has a bad ending, as long as the journey is entertaining then I will be satisfied.

Survival Horror - A heavy and convincing atmosphere is one of the top things I love in a game, and when survival horror is done right they have this in spades. Even better when they have a compelling story. Gameplay comes secondary in this for me, although it's always welcome. I'd probably put the Souls series under this blanket, despite being action RPG games. I think Silent Hill 2 is still the greatest game ever made, and The Evil Within was GOTY for 2014.

RPG - I'm a little iffier on this one, I think RPGs are an easy thing to get wrong, and most of them I'm not overly keen on. Things like Dragon Age and Final Fantasy are okay-good I reckon. Baldur's Gate is the best of these, along with Planescape and the SMT/Persona series.

Character Action - I like having crazy bullshit games to go to every once in a while, and Character Action always seems to do that best. Western games under this always feel lacking though, like God of War. I love how different they can feel, while still ostensibly being similar. Lollipop Chainsaw and Killer is Dead are a couple I really like, then compared with other greats like Godhand, Devil May Cry, MGR: Revengeance and Bayonetta. It's very varied.

1) RPG

Is the only favourite genre. Other genres are nice, but not my favourite.

And when I say RPG, I mean actual RPG - games where I have decisions to make, with consequences that follow from those decisions. Games like Fallout 1/2/NV, Vampire Bloodlines, Gothic 1/2, Witcher 1/2/3 and so on. Also, more exploration game has, the better. So Witcher 3 can't come soon enough.
Not action games with stats like Diablo. Although I did use to enjoy Diablo 1/2 a lot as well.

RPG
Because choice and progression, and often, interesting story and background.

Survival-Horror
Because I love spooky stuff, and no other medium succeeds in scaring me.

Stealth
Because MGS.

  1. Fighting games [I include beatem up/Hack N Slash in this as its all combos to me :)]
  2. Collectible card Games (Culdcept da best.)
  3. Bullet Hell ( I import them and love them. Scoring mechanics are fun to learn and use )

RPGs.

1. JRPG - I am more familiar with standard Western culture so the Japanese fantasies, styles and such are more alien to me. I find it more interesting. Some of the older games also had some interesting mechanics. Growing up with Final Fantasy also plays a part, they had wacky stories and were often graphically amongst the best in RPGs. I often feel JRPG does light-hearted stuff a bit better than WRPGs.
2. WRPG - I enjoy the style of gameplay. The parties and adventuring was great. Story is also quite good. What really took me in was the number of choices in dialogue in some of the older games like Planescape.
3. SRPG - Customizing your army, finding the winning strategy and the pressure of losing a favoured unit is pretty good. I always enjoy seeing what new units/classes can bring to the battle field. One of my favourite features is having a large cast of characters to choose from and this happens most in this type of game.

Though I guess if that doesn't count.

1. RPG - Huge variety of different styles and aspects. So much to play, enjoy and experience. I've experienced a lot in this genre and know what to look for when I need an RPG fix.
2. Action Adventure - I enjoy action and a good adventure is fun. I enjoy seeing different worlds in the game, exploring, puzzles, combat and just exploring can be fun.
3. Hunting Games - It is the slow grind and preparation to tackle beasts. Triumphing against tough enemies and finally getting good enough to fight these enemies easily. Multiplayer is also very fun.

I spend a lot of time playing shooters, I do really enjoy them but oddly I can never place them high in my heart.

1. Third Person Action Games
2. JRPGs
3. Platformers

Don't have a better reason than that genres just "click" with me the most. I enjoy other genres, too, but not as much as this three.

F.R.E.E. - I wish this genre had more than two games. I really love how I was completely drawn into the game world, the story and the event had such a strong impression and lasting memory.

RPGS - Mostly JRPG games, if I try to count the games. But I'm not sure how wide I can use this genre, but I love JRPG games, action rpgs like Ys or the Souls games.

Strategy games - Mostly turnbased, and those could count as strategy rpgs.

1. Lords Management
2. Character Action
3. Platformers

That was my first thought but it's not that clear cut at all. I love TBS, RPGs, FPSs, Action-Adventures, Walking Simulators, Fighting, Survival Horror and a bunch of other genres just as much.

1. RPG (Ys, EO, Souls, Fire Emblem, Tales of...)
2. Shoot'em up (CAVE games, Touhou, Astebreed, Crimzon Clover...)
3. Visual Novels (Umineko alone justifies this)

I don't think I can explain why. I just love them.

1. RPGs.
2. Action-Adventure
3. Horror

Hard to decide, to be honest. The only genres I don't really play are RTS and simulations.

1. RPG
2. Strategy
3. Platformer

It's really close tho, before posting this I swapped nr 1 and 3 quick.
These are also pretty much the only genres I really pay attention to.

Dungeon Crawler
RPG
Shmup

Always been a fan of these. The order changes around depending on my mood but that's usually my top 3. Sometimes visual novel jumps in and overtakes the current 3rd place spot though.

1. Historical strategy games - this is a very small genre unfortunately, with basically only a handful really good games in it, like the Paradox-titles, the Civilization-series, Colonization and the Imperialism-games, but I just seriously LOVE it when they do this genre right, as you get to learn and relive interesting parts of out past, and also participate in challenging and fun gameplay. And no, this does not include tactics-games like Age of Empires etc.

2. 2D-plattformers - pure gameplay, quick gratification, no bad stories or other stuff that distracts from the experience, and when done right gives you just an incredible feeling of accomplishment when you beat them.

3. Action-adventure/rpg's - I am kinda cheating here by making this a pretty broad category were I include all stuff were your characters progress and get better, and also is action-based. So that include both stuff like Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid and Demons Souls. Like with the 2D-plattformers, the best games in this genre is about skill and pure gameplay, and gives great satisfaction when you overcome obstacles, without a lot of distracting stuff.

1, Mech game
2. Space Sim
3. Strategy(cheating I know, real-time, grand, and turn-based)

The trio of deadness. At least Strategy has seen some continued life and Space sims are coming up on a revival, but mech games will probably remain dead...

RPG's, of all flavours, especially Bioware's (Bar ME3).

Action Adventures, be they part shooters, fighting, or combat free. Tomb Raider being my favourite, with Zelda close behind

Horror, action or survival. Adore Resi, especially Nemesis.

1) Wargaming (Harpoon Series, Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations, Combat Mission: Shock Force, Combat Mission: Black Sea)

2) Simulations (Steel Beasts Pro PE, DCS World, MSFT Flight Sims, Jane's AH64D Longbow, Aces High, etc...)

3) Grand Strategy (Paradox games, primarily)

1) RPG (SRPG/Tactical RPG followed by JRPG)

I enjoy playing games that challenges the mind and causes you to think carefully about the choices you make. Intelligent Systems caters to that very well.

2) Character Action

Get to feel like a badass fighting enemies that keep me on my toes and the ones I do play require some skill rather than simple button mashing. I get to let loose and discover gameplay mechanics without feeling like I'm having my hand held.

3) Fighting

I only play fighting games casually but always have fun playing against others and the fighting genre holds what I think is the best community. Plus the salt.
