What are your Windows 7 annoyances?

So how do you go about doing a clean install on an "upgrade"? I think thats what I have. I only had "custom" and "upgrade" when I installed over the RC.

I did a clean install and when I ran Windows Update, the first time it said it failed all 24 updates! But I ran it again and they went through ok. Is this normal? I almost got a heart attack.
This is usually because Windows Update automatically starts installing many critical updates and drivers for devices which have none as soon as you first boot it up - so the error you got was likely that another install was already in progress.

I have everything setup in the BIOS to allow my CPU to run slower than the 2.85GHz it is normally clocked at but the speed never slows down :( Add to that the fact that I can't get my fans to slow down for some reason using Speedfan and my PC is currently a very noisy/hot machine :(

What do I do to fix this in 7?

Have you installed any Adobe software? I had that problem, and it turned out to be the adobe shell extension that was crapping things up (eventually started having repeated explorer.exe crashes). I used ShellExView to get rid of it.
I do have adobe software. I downloaded ShellExView...what am I supposed to look for in it? I don't see anything 'Adobe' under the Extension Name column.

Where are you checking your clockspeed? In the device manager the processor just shows the factory speed settings, but when I look at cpu-z I can see the proper overclock.

You can disable UAC completely from Control Panel -> User Accounts.

but if you do you're really really stupid.

I'm calling bullshit on any program installing itself at the root of C. That's been a design no-no for 20 years now. Last time I saw that was Win 3.1. Give me the name of a program that does that.
The Visual C++ 200X redistributable barfs EULAs and dll files into C:\
It's somewhat annoying.

Huh, mine was listed under 'Adobe Drive CS4.' Regardless, I would look through all of the shell extensions listed in ShellExView (sort by type) and disable any you don't use. I hate my right click menus getting cluttered with useless junk, and it seems to slow down the context menu behavior over time. My performance went from 1-2 second delay to instant.

That's quite rude.

I've personaly disabled UAC because it's a bother, I actually realized that leaving it on was a waste of energy, since it doesn't really do anything except bother you with a Lightbox window. I do have it enabled on the PC everyone uses, but on this one (I'm the sole user) I don't.

After doing so, I wonder why I had never done it in Vista (which is more obtrusive than 7) or earlier.

smh. You know by turning it off you're allowing any and every script that may run on your computer to do whatever it wants.

UAC is there for a reason.

right, and the second lowest (including 'off' as the lowest) barely ever comes up - it isn't intrusive at all, i don't see why you'd turn it off completely

Never tried the second lowest, only one I tried is the recommended and I found it pretty intrusive. Got the second lowest on now though and it's not too bad I guess. Just seemed pretty much unnecessary since I've gone three years with it turned off and had no problems. (Vista and 7) But I guess a day might come where I'll be thankful for it. Maybe.

UAC is always the first thing i turn off when doing a fresh install. i've had it off since it was first added to vista and never had a problem. leaving it on is a pain in the ass...

How is it a pain in the ass? how often are you making changes to Windows that it becomes a problem?

And I like the attitude of "i've never had a problem"... that you know of. You're giving every single program on your computer (even shit like Flash) complete access to your computer.

Ignorance is bliss.

An NTUSER.dat and RMBAK file have suddenly appeared in my User folder. Is this normal? Do you guys have them too? I'm not sure but running Registry Mechanic might have triggered it.

I finally installed the full Premium version a few weeks back (I'd been using the RC up until that point) and a very occasional backlight issue has now become much more of a PITA. Specifically, when I wake the laptop from sleep, the backlight will revert to the lowest/dimmest setting and nothing I do short of a reboot will correct it. I went from having the problem a handful of times over the last 10 months to once a day on average now.

No idea whether it's a driver thing or some code they tweaked since the RC. ATI isn't refreshing their DX9 drivers anymore, so I'm screwed if it is a driver problem :(

The only thing I hate is that I can't access or see the /appdata folder under my username even though I have full Admin privileges (the only account on this computer...I installed the OS myself).

Anyone know how to fix this? I sometimes (rarely) need to access that folder to manipulate some application files. I end up having to go in a backdoor through a dos prompt and copy the files out via command line. Such a pain in the ass.

Sorry if it's been mentioned and it's not really on topic, but I just discovered that pressing Windows + <number> is a shortcut key to open up whatever is pinned in the task bar.

For example:

"Windows + 2" will open Media Player

Pretty neat feature :)

This is awesome, since i read your message i use it every time i'm on the computer

Not being able to set the View differently in each folder, I know it sounds OCD but I like how I display certain folders to be different.

so, anybody knows how to do something about that?
i know it works for different librairies, but inside one precise big folder like "documents" it doesn't seem to be possible to have different views in each folder

FAKE EDIT: OMG "WINDOWS + D" IS A 'SHOW DESKTOP' SHORTCUT!!!

I didn't know Windows+numbers openes programs in the task bar, but I've know for a long time that Windows+D is desktop (awesome), Windows+E is My computer, and Windows+L is closing your session.
There are a few others, but these are the ones I find more useful. :D

on the UAC thing, one thing I don't like about it when it's on is that you have to always click "show processes from all users" in task manager.

REMEMBER MY SELECTION DAMMIT

Don't know if this has been covered, but my one annoyance is that unless you have a certain Intel wireless car, no LEAP works. (yes, I know LEAP sucks, my broke ass employer isn't going to upgrade hardware/software in this economy.) I have to use the public wi-fi, then log onto VPN to get on the network.

Is there a generic LEAP driver for x64 that I don't know about?

OK... Where the hell is the 'game controller' section where I can see the inputs register and all that? In XP it was very prominent and easy to find in control panel. Windows 7, not so much.

Anyone?

Same place as it always has been...

but if you want to find it easily just open the start menu and type in "game controllers"

Not sure if they still have that but my 360 controller shows up at: Control Panel\Devices and Printers

None.

Runs perfectly and quickly for me. Never used Vista and decided to make the jump to 7 from XP about a month ago. Absolutely love it. Not a single complaint.

Mostly this although I do still get annoyed by "Remind me to restart my computer in..."

I just want an "I'll get to it, stop nagging me! button. Although I am quite grateful it won't fucking restart on its own, regardless of what you had open, anymore.

Press win key, type "game," click Set up USB game controllers. It's in the control panel somewhere too but this is typically the easiest way to find anything.

EDIT: oh and feel free to grab and pin it to the top left of the start menu if you're using it a lot, like I have.

I had no idea these Netbooks with Atom CPUs could handle Windows 7. Slapped it on a Latitude 2100 last night and I was pleasantly surprised by the performance. Nice lil' OS.

My annoyance is that my LAC keeps picking up an "Unidentified Network" while at the same time picking up my "Home Network". I'm connected via ethernet. But when both networks are 'connected' I have no internet access.

Usually all I have to do is disable the LAC and enable it and things will be fine. On the rare occasion I have to reboot for it to work properly.

Pretty annoying when it happens. But if that is my only beef I can live with that.

I'd like to have the start button on the lower left instead of upper left when the bar is docked on the side. But that's about it.

Open up your start menu, type in "cleartype", the result will give you a wizard to turn it off or adjust to your liking.

XNView > Irfanview

Yes. The search bar combined with pinning most used apps on the taskbar makes the start menu almost obsolete.

IMO the start menu should be a search bar alone, with two items that open up a menu. One being "All Programs" and the other being "Control Panel"

*edit* Probably a third for your libraries.

That turns off about 1/2 the cleartype scattered about the place, not all. Like i said Segue UI is the font they used in Vista/7 instead of tahoma, unfortunately it has cleartype-esque smoothing built into the font itself, so the only way to remove it is the replace the font itself. Works wonders in Office 2007 too (which btw the cleartype option does nothing).

You can turn it completely off in the registry, but that would disable ALL font smoothing, fonts don't look nice when you cant even have XP font smoothing, so replacing the font seems the best option, its not like you'll use the font for anything, it sucks as a typeface for printing letters.

GAF, I am in desperate need of help. I have spent all evening, since I got in, trying to install my copy of Windows 7. Currently running Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Specs are;

Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz
4GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 4800

Now, I wouldn't so I am incompetent with computers, I mostly know what I'm doing, but I'm stuck. Every time I try and install Windows 7, upgrade of clean install, it fails. 20% on expanding Windows Files is where it usually goes, the message that appears;

"Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation."

And of course, restarting the installation just causes the above to repeat. I can't figure out the problem, spent ages on google and what not, searching around, removed any anti-virus, removed any incompatible programs, defaulted my BIOS set up, tried everything I could find suggested online, and I'm stuck. Does anyone have any ideas how I can get this to install?

My computer also seems to have the temporary files stored on it now, as every time I turn it on, it tries to automatically install Windows 7, and if I let it, it fails, reboots and retries, so I have to override the choices to actually log on. Apologies in advance if I'm just doing something completely stupid here, but I'm on the verge of pulling my hair out!

Could anyone tell me an easy way to restrict a profile from being able to install any software on Windows 7 Pro? For some reason even the guest account can install software.

My moms boyfriends kids are always messing up her computer so I'm trying to make a restricted account for them, but as far as I can tell the parental controls only has 3 options, time limits, game ratings and application restrictions but I don't want to pick specific programs that they can or can't use I just want to prevent them from installing anything else on the system.

Also is there an easy way to restrict porn sites?

i love windows 7, but microsoft really fucked up the way profiles work..in winxp and even vista i could make a profile just the way I like and copy it to the default profile so whoever logged in had the same exact settings..this was a must in the IT field when you are doing mass imaging. MS took this function out and now makes you use sysprep for everything and it sucks so hard...

anybody have any tips for me?

Not certain if it's a driver or Windows 7 issue but I hate the IDT audio getting crackly a week or so after reinstalling the driver.

have you tried installing from boot instead of Windows?

Annoyances? The same ones that are a Microsoft trademark. Constant crashing and I just got my 2nd blue screen of death yesterday.

hum. probably a problem with your hardware. have Win 7 installed on two pcs and I haven't got any crashes in the 6 months I've been using them...

My only complaint so far is that I keep getting random split second pauses/hiccups in WoW and I can't figure out why! I doubt it's Windows 7's fault but I never had this problem before.

I don't see how they could install software unless you turn UAC off. Admin privileges are required to install most software.

yep. Make the user a standard user, put a password on your administrator account and turn UAC on (if it's not already)
