Driver Certification - HATE

yeah I can get a program to run it in test mode but fuck! I just want to use my PS3 controller!

I've been using W7 64-bit for about 4 months now and haven't seen a BSOD or had a compatibility problem. It's fast and well designed. I skipped Vista and I can say that I don't miss XP at all.

Install this: (http://www.citadelindustries.net/readydriverplus/) It's called ready driver plus. When you boot your computer it will automatically select to allow unsigned drivers to be used so you don't have to. Readydriver plus + MotionJoy = Dualshock 3 controller on PC

That's how I get the job done, anyway. I promise it works awesome. Enjoy!

I got Windows 64-bit 7 when I built my new computer for 800 bucks about a month ago. My old computer was a 800 dollar refurbished dell and was 5 years old 32 bit xp.

Some programs like Sonar run just as slow on my brand new computer as it did with my old. Sure, windows loads super fast...10 seconds and i'm at the desktop ready to go, but a lot of these programs run very slow. Even things like virus check are just slow. Obviously, for games, this thing will kick some butt compared to my old system but I haven't done that yet and this computer was built around music applications, and yet, it's slow and i'm 99% sure it's because things are technically compatible with Windows 7 64 bit, but not optimized. That or the performance boost for your average extensive non-game application has hit a wall. I dunno.

Regardless of the reason, this is the first time in my life where the 5 or 6 years go by, and I make myself a new mid-level computer and I'm completely underwhelmed by the overall performance. Not the numbers, the numbers say one thing, the reality says another.

what parts did you buy for your PC

Copy paste this from my newegg email -

CPU AMD|PH II X4 955BE 3.2G AM3 - Retail

MEM 2Gx2|ADATA HY63I1B16K R - Retail

MB ASUS|M4A785TD-V EVO 785G RT - Retail

CASE ANTEC|SONATA III 500 BK RT - Retail

HD 640G|WD WD6401AALS % - OEM

WIN HOME PREM 7 64-BIT ENG 1PK DSP - OEM

CPU COOLER CM| RR-910-HTX3-G1 R - Retail

And a ATI 4850

Stuff like the DVD RW, SD card reader, sound card I gutted from my old computer.

The computer is really fast...as I said before, count to 10 and I'm on the internet. Never thought I'd say that while spending well under a grand. And Windows 7 for the most part is pretty reliable. I am not Control Alt Deleting like I used to. The box runs cool as a cucumber too. But things like Firefox...still a little buggy and hitches. As I said before, I'm using it mostly with Sonar and cpu/memory extensive vsts and the performance may be a little better, but it's minute. I still get dropout with 8 gigs ram and a am3 quad core just like I did before with only 3 gigs ram and a dual core 5 years ago. I still get jittering because the pc gets caught up. Virus check and loading the extensive vsts still takes what feels like to me, roughly the same amount of time.

I've had it for about 6 weeks and my only issues have all been Firefox related. Mostly the memory issue which was resolved with an add-on. I've tried to use other browsers, I just always end up going back to FF. Otherwise, Win 7 runs great on the new laptop and I haven't had any problems with other programs.

What kind of memory problem?

Firefox memory leaked (would start taking up 700 MB after 30 minutes or so) for me with Vista x64, and it's doing the same with Windows 7 64-bit. It's not a huge deal, but is kind of annoying.

Pretty much the same thing although it started taking up that much or more immediately upon restart. I think I used this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11922?src=api
I'm not 100% sure since my laptop is at home.

I have never crashed (nor had any problems) because of Windows Vista or Windows 7. Bought both on release, I must be lucky.

I had NO idea.

See, I think this kinda stuff is what is bothering me about my first foray into a new-ish OS and 64 bit. Any benefits I'm getting with my hardware is being nullified by lack of support. I've downloaded so many updates and patches for my applications that are literally a month old that finally allow those programs to be compatible with win 7 64 bit, but I know that they're just sloppy patches that just appease the people complaining.

And then there are some old programs that aren't compatible at all. I really didn't plan on updating some of my old stuff (some of these programs run at 500+ bucks), but now it's either upgrade or no grade.

I'm sure this is just the growing pains of a new OS, but this is my first time being early to the party rather than late and I'm just not use to dealing with this stuff.

You know how you can drag a window to one side of the screen and it snaps to take up that half? Try it with multiple monitors - you can only snap to the edge of the entire screen space.

I'd love a more elegant way to handle this.

2 more.
Corrupt files tend to make folders load reeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallly slow and sometimes it just makes the folder not respond at all. Sometimes files aren't even corrupt but W7 can't read the header or some crap and it takes 5 minutes to open a file.
'Open with' command is gone. I think with XP you could press Control + right click.

Windows 7 has 'Open With'... maybe if the file has absolutely no associations it'll just show 'Open' but even in that case it will bring up a list of programs to browse.

What does pressing the Windows key + left arrow or right arrow do with multiple monitors?

Say your program is floating on the right monitor. Pressing win+left once will snap it to the left of the right monitor. Again and it will snap to the right of the left monitor. A third time and it will snap to the left of the left monitor.

It works pretty much perfectly. (if you like snapping.)

And yes, I realise that there's a "Show Desktop" button to the right of the clock, but I prefer it on the left side of the screen.
Okay sorry about the bump, but 1) how do you get the "quicklaunch" on the lower left to look like Vista? 2) how do you get the "show desktop" button back to the left hand side like Vista?

Honestly... Nothing. I have never been happier with an operating system. I have had 0 issues (outside an occasional firefox lag but that's common across all operating systems)

This coming from someone who stripped out the useless programs and services in XP Pro to make it run smoothly (Did same thing on 7 but there wasn't much to remove/disable). I also owned a macbook pro with OSX for 2-3 years and this is better than OSX. Best of both worlds, which it did by first copying a bunch of features/look of OSX (Vista) than improving the quality/coding and taking in user requests (7)

My only complaint would be that Win 7 doesn't show my webcam as a device under my computer, like it did in XP :( Otherwise it's been a dream, runs stable and no hassles of any kind.

Oh and before anyone mentions a Linux distro. I absolutely f'ing hate any variant of Unix (except as a backbone) just because I had to support an application that ran on SCO UNIX only and SCO UNIX was evil. I know that's like judging Windows 7 on Windows 3.1 but I can't help it.

With dual monitors, snapping doesn't work for each screen. So you can only snap to the far left of screen 1 at 50% and the far right of screen 2 at 50%. It's really annoying.

Oh agreed. 1 complaint here too. What's a good alternative solution?

None.. Having to go live with support of Win7 later this year and it makes Vista seem like a bad memory.

I noticed this little "EN" button that appears in the upper left corner of my screen on the logging off page and another English toolbar that appears during UAC prompts. How do I get rid of them?

Anybody?

Is it just me or is the Windows 7 file search horrible?

I could have one item in a folder but when I type in the file name it will say nothing found. If I have alot of files it'll just highlight all these words documents I have and make it even harder to locate than if I searched for it manually by scrolling through a list.

I'd disable it.

That's the first thing I do on any Windows 7 system. Just right click on "Computer" and select Manage. Then go to Services and then stop and disable "Windows Search". Horrible piece of crap.

Once you've done that, go get Everything and witness lightning fast non Microsoft search: http://www.voidtools.com/

Like 7 a lot. A bit less than os x, but it's for very particular reasons that probably wouldn't apply to many other people.

My only gripe is their activation stuff. I don't know how many pirates it encouraged to actually purchase a copy, but i just think it's annoying to have to activate constantly (I have a university copy, and it asks me once in a while to vpn to the uni and activate the copy over and over. it's not a big deal but it's tiresome)

Erm... that seems like a total pain in the ass.

Pirates aren't affected by activation at all because they have a few easy ways to bypass it.

To be fair, my only fear is that once i leave the uni, I will be left with a useless system. I'd be glad to buy the licence to purchase it for myself, but the uni copy is enterprise, so i am not even sure that's possible. I don't mind paying, but I don't want to reinstall :/

(can't open a new thread yet, sorry)

I had to change my Windows Live Messenger account and I just exported the old contacts and added them with the import option on the new account. As I can see right now, only a few people received my friend request yet. Is this normal to happen? Are the other people going to receive the request later or something?

anyone have problems with restore points just randomly disappearing? I manually made a restore point right after the initial install a few days ago. I checked today and it's missing.

yep, happened in Vista as well

so, how the hell can I search for all files in a specific folder? In XP I would just open up the search box, not type anything, and hit enter. It would return a list of all files in that folder/hdd.

Use Everything: http://www.voidtools.com/

You can right click on any folder or drive and choose to search everything below it. Everything is better than Windows' default search because it won't hide certain files from you like Windows will (even if you have it set to show all)

that works exactly how I needed it, thanks (asterisk trick does not). While I like W7's search from the start menu, the exclusion of the XP style search is terrible.

I suppose this is the best place to post this instead of making a new thread

Anyone else having problems of Explorer not refreshing whenever you move/delete/copy files?

My complain about Win7 i how backwards the windows photo viewer has become. Dunno if Vista is the same but Win7 cannot play gifs like Xp can. Gifs when you scrolling through images with it just appear as a static image of the first frame. Clicking on a gifs itself will open IE to view it in motion....wtf?

try the new Windows Live photo program?

not even Picasa's preview app displays animated gifs, sadly.
