What can current gen franchises do to stay relevant/fresh next generation.

Pretty simple question really.

COD:
Go hardcore scifi with power armor / exoskeleton / mecha that changes up the gameplay dramatically.

Halo:
Stay simple and retro. Minimum perks / minimum armor abilities. No iron sights. Fast strafing. It'll stand out pretty easily without any major changes. In single player, it'll be nice if Master Chief can issue voice commands to allied NPCs.
ODST (related):
Singleplayer like Farcry 3 with crafting, equipments, upgradeable weapons. Iron sights. Choose your insertion point for missions via drops.

Uncharted:
"Open world" like Assassins Creed?

Gears:
Inventory and crafting system similar to Last of Us. Stealth missions. Destructible environments. Missions where you play as the Locust.

The above is 1-2 min brainstorm of changes that probably would not make it through initial prototyping, so there is no need to be upset.

Gears:
Inventory and crafting system from Last of Us. Stealth missions. Destructible environments. Missions where you play as a locust commander. Ultimately become Last of Us in space.

How about no? Gears of War needs to return to it's "Not Judgement" roots. Return to what made Gears actually good, and that was the original play style. RAAMs Shadow proved that being a locust commander is without a doubt the most boring power trip ever.

Steer clear of homogenization. I honestly see franchises like CoD and Assassin's Creed in major trouble over the next few years.

So in other words the key to stay relevant for Gears is to become irrelevant? This thread is about franchises that arguably faces franchise fatigue. A re-skinned version of GOW is going to get panned critically and commercially, despite possibly being loved by the few remaining devotees.

I think it depends on the game but I don't think that a game *has* to change because of generations. Halo has been steady through 2 going into 3 now.

There are games that need a boost to remain relevant... namely both GoWs (gear/god).

CoD is going to stagnate because that will prolong sales. If they go sci fi like you mentioned people would jump off that bandwagon in a second. If they keep making the same game it will take several years.

Exoskeleton / power armor isn't more far-fetched than some of the tech they had in Black Ops 2. If I recalled correctly, Black Ops 2 sold plenty.

Your idea for Gears is horrible. That is what is ruining Gears. Straying away from its roots. Also, not every game needs crafting. It worked for Last of Us but can be a nuisance in more "gameplay" heavy games.

Another no to iron sights being introduced to Halo as well. It has received way too much call of duty treatment already.

They can stop trying to pursue the CoD, WoW, Skyrim, ect. fanbases that probably won't even care about their game and focus on improving their games instead of removing complexities.

Scavenging and crafting makes sense narratively in a post apocalyptic world such as Sera post emergence day. I would much desire a survival horror game set in the Gears Universe with nearly similar mechanics to Last of US over another entry in a tired franchise.

Gears fans think it's a great idea too.

I'm glad your not a games designer!!!

That's not continuing the Gears franchise, that's making a new franchise that's a ripoff of The Last of Us.

Uncharted needs to be more open. Similar design to Drake's Fortune with three or so different major locations. City, Island, Amusement Park, Village, etc.

Gears was fast action.
Crafting and scavenging would make it slow game.
Its like an complete 180.

If 343 puts iron sights in halo then i know they lost their mind and don't know what halo is and what made it popular. I just hate the slowing down of current gen titles and how they all are pushed out from the same cookie cutter frame.

Gears is just tired altogether. Epic really should move onto a new IP. Same thing with SSM and God of War.

I love the GOW and GOW universes. I think the universes are amazing and it would be a shame to dump the lore and art associated with the universe. Just dump the old gameplay mechanics for next generation and reuse the universe.

Halo can wear a cat suit.

I think Assassins Creed could really benefit from making its two core mechanics - parkour traversal and melee combat - a lot less automated;it's almost getting ridiculous at this point. Also, they need to ditch the Desmond arch and start fresh with a new character.

Mario Kart:

Add shotguns as an item and have a very bloody effect occur upon impact. Bob-ombs would also now be nuclear and damage from said nuclear bomb would be depicted upon your character. There would also be an HP bar and if you lose enough HP - mainly due to losing blood - you drop out of the race. You'd also never be able to select that character ever again because they'd be dead.

But...Gears 3 kind of
ended the story in general?
I mean, no one wants to keep fighting the locust, nor do they want to continue fighting the COG. It's, again, why Judgment was bad. Adding a new enemy ala Halo 4 would just drag out to series into shit. I say, just keep the Gears titles as MP-only games for the future. Or make game adaptations of the novels/comics.

I've used to think of this like, playing as a Stranded or exiled Locust or something could work with your idea. But TLoU mechanics should only work for TLoU. Including gunplay.

I feel like this is a fool's errand. All of the franchises you mentioned would only suffer from saturation/fatigue and would likely be received as wannabes. These franchises were all popular because they executed on specific mechanics very well... to throw those out and try to replace them with disjointed "hey this is popular now I guess????" mechanics has never worked out well. I'd like them to retire these franchises for a solid generation and then re-evaluate

I don't know if Assassin's Creed can stay relevant after the awful "third" iteration of the series. They ram the series into the ground with poorly put together games like the aforementioned third game and Revelations. Both have the flaw of half baked new mechanics and barely connected areas. All signs of rushing what could have been an amazing experience out the Window as soon as possible.

Unless Ubisoft changes this practice, the series will be worse for it.

It's actually very easy. TAKE YOUR FUCKING TIME.

Bad Example: CoD, NFS, Assassins Creed etc
Good Examples: Any other franchise...

I think it would be interesting if the industry just killed off all current gen franchises with the move to nextgen and everyone just started completely fresh. New IPs from everyone....would be awesome to see imo.

Nintendo would be hosed.

Although I do want more IPs from them :)

You don't want any more Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy games? It's okay to keep on reusing the universe imo while trashing the gameplay.

Honestly, some franchises just need a break. Particularly ones like Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed. Give the fans some time to enjoy the games out now and give the developers more time to work on a new installment. The perception of homogenization is only magnified by the frequency of releases.

Valkyria Chronicles set in modern times

Dont westernize the game. Keep the art style, the storytelling, and the gameplay. But make it with Apache choppers and automatic assault rifles and stuff.

Nope, no more of any of it. I want Nintendo to bring some new magic, lets see what they can do without the tired stable. I wonder if industry could sustain itself if every dev brought new ips this gen instead of relying on the same old tired shit.

What, are you kidding me? Every year there are a new group of preteens who turn 13. You think UbiVision is going to ignore that by not releasing on the clock?

I don't want another Uncharted. I want Naughty Dog to do what they have done in the past, and leave their franchises in their relevant generations, in favour of making something even better for a new generation.

Same with Gears, I really don't want more Gears, please do something more interesting with UE4 than just another Gears, Epic.

Man, some of you guys are real downers. Just play along...

LittleBigPlanet
- Overhaul Sackboy's physics and moveset
- 3D gameplay and creation
- Take full advantage of share button features, especially video capturing
- background downloading for community levels and software updates

Uncharted
- More interactive and skillful platforming, less automated.
- additional ways to interact with enemies besides shooting (like setting traps)
- more off-the-beaten-path exploration
- backpack inventory with various tools (canteen, rope, flares, etc.)
- local wildlife

Street Fighter
- post SFIII timeline
- Significant (yet still familiar) character re-designs that show interesting developments since we last saw the cast

Uncharted
- More interactive and skillful platforming, less automated. I thought the linear platforming parts where of uncharted where terrible. It'll be nice if we can shoot ropes and free climb where ever we want.

Nice example.
