Watching something on the discovery channel about killer insects and figured I'd make a thread about it. Should be interesting given the international nature of GAF. What are the biggies in your neck of the woods?

(figure I'll start with spiders - everybody's favorite)

Savannah, Georgia

Brown Recluse (I just killed one of these two days ago, actually)

and

Black Widow (these are in everybody's storm drains and underground water meters around here)

Ok, they're not insects. Who gives a shit?

I was laughing at the pun, actually.

Slugs. Shots fired.

Nevermind. I can't be the only one here with killer insects in the yard can I? :lol

We get the occasional brown recluse up in maine. Hate those things. But maine is luckily not home to any deadly insects (unless you count lyme disease from a tick).

We have some nasty bastards here in Argentina though

and in the north we have this evil SOB

Brazilian wandering spider, bite is 30 times more venomous than a rattlesnakes and it's extremely aggressive.

Fiddleback spiders here in Oklahoma. I knew a guy who had his shed infested with black widows once! Bleh! I've yet to see one, but I live in the city and don't venture in the weird places that spiders like to hang :lol Heard plenty of other people who've dealt with them on farms or a bit outside of town.

Tarantulas aren't dangerous, right? Saw a monster one walking in my front yard one day when I was a little kid. It was so cool.

I live in London, so nothing deadly. Saying that, I keep all my spiders. They hunt all the other pests like mosquitoes and stuff for me.

Spiders are my friends.

:3

don't worry, spiders aren't insects either

True that!

I couldn't think of anything else that could kill around here besides spiders, though. Maybe I should add to my daily bit of tension with a quick google search.

I'm waiting for an Austrailan to post about those killer hybrid ant/cricket things they have.

As an aside I dig spiders too. I only kill the ones that can kill me, and only if they invade my home.

Nothing, I'm living in Europe
no monstrous insects/arachnids here(to be fair I saw little scorpions in Corsica but that's about it)

nah, they cant kill you. its just a really bad bee sting. some rare species can mess with you for a day or so [numbness and pain around the bite area], but i don't think anyone's ever died from a tarantula bite.

I hate scorpions! We would get them all the time when I lived in Texas. That was actually kind of freaky.

The most dangerous creature we have in England is an adder, and you'd have to get bitten and not do anything about it for a week for it to be deadly.

Yeah I totally freaked out when I saw one the first time:lol
The little sneaky bastard was hiding under a bag :chills:

Freudian slip? :lol

A poster on this board(You know who you are) had made some comments about that mackenzie phillips situation that's stuck with me the past few days. As I was making that post I was reading about how another person made some questionable remarks as well.

So basically, it was an accident.

I've googled a bit and the most dangerous spider we got is the Diving bell spider
The prey of these spiders includes various aquatic insects and crustaceans. Their fangs are robust enough to pierce human skin and the bite is said to quite painful, causing localised inflammation and feverish symptoms.

Those are really cool. Back when the Disney Channel used to play nature documentaries (years and years and years ago) they had one that featured this little guy. He'd run up to the surface of the water for a second and when he came back under he'd have tiny air bubbles stuck to his legs and he'd collect them in the big bubble surrounded by web. Really neat.

I don't like spiders. I don't think I should have came in this thread, and I definitely should not have looked up the deadly spiders in my area.

We have black widows, deer ticks, and brown recluse. I have to worry more about snakes than bugs in my area.

In the UK, our back gardens are infested with these terrifying monstrosities. These are the height of deadlyness for Britain:

God I love being British.

I've seen a few hedgehogs raving on the lawn occasionally. Those spikes can be quite sharp...

In terms of insects, the worst are probably wasps. Then those crazy flying ant swarms in the summer but they're more annoying than deadly.

but seriously in the uk we get these-

Wolf%20Spider%20-%20Compressed.jpg

wolf spiders.

completely harmless but they run as fast as fuck and perfectly proportioned for scarring the ever loving shit out of you as they launch at a billion miles an hour across your floor aiming at your feet.

one chased me in primary school; or by coincidence i ran screaming like a girl in the same direction he decided to go, swear to god those things could do sub 9's on the 100m sprint.

:lol My friend was chased by a giant spider in Indonesia. We were down a path and one was sitting in the middle of it. He tried to scare it off and the damn thing hissed at him and reared up on it's back legs. My friend takes off running, screaming like a little girl, and the spider starts running after him (or like you said, happened to run in the same direction). The evil little creature was gaining on him too, until my buddy went into a classroom and slammed the door shut.

I've killed about 10 black widows in my back yard over the last two years. Never had them before but now they're here to party.
