• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

What developer will be GAF's next darling? (ala Platinum, From Software, etc.)

Do people here love From's games other than the souls ones?

Of course we do. King's Field series is great. Otogi series is one of the best series to play on OG Xbox. Echo Night is a cool and underrated horror game series. Kuon is one of those cult j-horror, B-horror games and Armored Core is loved by plenty, not as big of a fanbase as Souls sure, but it definitely has a really dedicated following.

gaf darling? what are we, a hivemind?

Kind of

Go read a thread about literally any Ubisoft game and you'll see it in action

Pretty much. Or a Bethesda game... or Bethesda vs. CDPR (*ducks*).

Really, you will get this in any forum. Certain things will be more popular (or at least there will be a loud crowd around either liking it or hating it).

Oh, and some one already beat me to the punch, I was going to joke that it would be Bethesda (who I actually like even though I agree they are pretty flawed. Some how I still love their games even though I usually agree with a lot of criticism... well other than Fallout 4's graphics which I actually like).

But I'll put my vote in for Guerilla Games (well at least I'm hoping that Horizon New Dawn turns out to be awesome).

tri-Ace, once Exist Archive gets a US release and (hopefully) Star Ocean 5 turns out to be awesome

This could be the year that Arkane and inXile earn their place as god tier developers. I think that there used to be a company called sprocket or pump or something that used to make video games as well. I forget.

I think SCS Software has a legit chance of turning heads in 2016.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 convinced even the most cynical gamers that the Mundane Vehicle Sim genre was the real deal. It takes serious chops to elevate a highly-lampooned, niche experience to respectability among the masses.

With American Truck Simulator only weeks away, I strongly feel that the doors are going to be thrown wide open to a welcoming audience of not only genre vets, but first-timers who once scoffed the MVS genre.

I think ATS will win hearts and change minds.

If 4a games diversifies from Metro (supposedly they have another title in the works) I think they could become more prominent. The two previous Metro titles were far from perfect but at the same time offerend a pretty unique experience and were visually astounding. I have high hopes for them and hope they mature in the same way CD Projekt has.

DontNod possibly. Life is Strange seems to have been a big hit. I think they have a Vampire RPG in the works, be interested to see how that works out.

So, the current darlings are Platinum, From, Naughty Dog and CD Project Red, the next one will be Kojima Productions? Well, at least I like most of Platinum's work (and ND's work in the interval [Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter: Precursor Legacy], but I doubt that's helping much), so maybe I won't be bullied too much ^^?

A good number of people here say things that make Kojima sound crazy. These people complain about his style of story telling or his portrayal of certain characters.

I know for a fact that fans are anticipating what Kojima Productions will give us, but as a darling development/studio beloved by GAF, I do not see that happening. Maybe amongst true Kojima fans.

Kojima Prod. *might* release one game during this generation. I can't see them being much of a darling until the very end of the PS4/XBone generation, maybe.

Mostly echoing sentiments from this thread already, but my picks are Machine Games and CDPR.

The latter pretty much is already there, but Cyperpunk (if good) will give them the praise they've rightfully gained.

MachineGames can certainly make it there if they deliver another hit. I kind of seem them as a Western Platinum. Obviously not the same genres, but in a sense that they don't make too much noise. They let their games speak for themselves.

Kojima Productions is an obvious one but I already think they're there. I know they're officially independent now, but I've always viewed them as their own entity aside from Konami.

To avoid all the ones that were mentioned over and over I think Techland could cement itself pretty firmly with its next release. Dying Light was received far better than people expected and what they did with the updates being free and allowing people to buy the dlc at the old price for a time seems pretty legit. Assuming this expansion is as good as the base game I think their next release could make them a real fan favourite.

DontNod possibly. Life is Strange seems to have been a big hit. I think they have a Vampire RPG in the works, be interested to see how that works out.

I could see this too, especially if SE continues working with them and trusts them with some budget...
