What do we know about FFXIII? Anything?

GDJustin

stuck my tongue deep inside Atlus' cookies
I've been "out" of the epic RPG scene for like 5+ years now. I keep buying them, playing them for about 5-10 hours, then shelving them. FFIX is the last epic RPG I beat, I think.

...but I'm playing through FFXII and it has changed all that. The game is a GODDAMN MASTERPIECE, and a landmark videogame achievement. I'll probably make an LTTP topic on it soon enough.

Anyway the point is playing through XII got me thinking about XIII.

What exactly do we know about it? Anything? Is it keeping the in-the-field, realtime battle system of XII? (please please please yes)? Has there even been any new media since E3 2006? Any new details revealed since then?

We don't know much. It's gonna have "in-the-field" battle system like FFXII - and it's gonna be GotY 2008.

Looks amazing. The chick has too much clothing, more skin less clothes please. If it's ok for the dudes, then it's a requirement for the chicks, so to the FF guys, stop being so gay biased, we hetero need something to look at too hmmk?

I just beat FF12 this very evening and also want to know if they're going to keep the real time combat. It's far from perfect, but it's so much less tedious than turn based combat that I'm not sure I'll ever be able to go back.

You take that back :p

I'm about ~18 hours in (traveling through the snowy mountain area after the jungle), and I can't think of ANYTHING I'd change about the battle system. Besides maybe being able to swap in and out complete lists of preset gambits instead of just being able to turn individual ones off and on (I want a field gambit set and a boss battle gambit set).

Oh no, one game out of thousands has scantily-clad men instead of women!! Somebody call the Justice League!!!
.... seriously, if it bothers you so, go play DOA or something.

I said the same thing about the presets...
It would work wonders

Please, no.

If you want that there are countless other games.

Harmful status effects like stone/poison/sap are pretty much useless, because regular enemies die too quickly for them to help you, and bosses are IMMUNE TO ****ING EVERYTHING EXCEPT MAYBE SLOW AND SILENCE IF YOU'RE LUCKY. In 75 hours of play, I had some spells that I didn't use once because I knew they'd be worthless, and others I used just to see what they did. Also, you don't get any "foe: weak to <element>" gambits until like 40 hours into the game, and even then, you'll only have enough room for 1 or 2 at a time. Magic in general was handled kind of poorly in the game. I used it way less than I would have liked, simply because it was just easier to let my Foe: lowest hp attack" gambit handle most of the combat

And the gambit system is too simplistic. This is unrealistic, but since I'm a nerd, I'd love a gambit system that is like:

<target> <condition 1> <and/or/not> <condition 2> <action>

Did i say it bothers me dude? I'm just sayin it would be nice, since it's not a problem for the male characters.

What's with that defensive shit, "OMG like UH, go play DOA freak, FF women are classy n shit" pfff

Dude i'm not asking her to go around in a bikini. She can look sexy and at the sametime not look like a skank. I'm not even talking something gratuitous here, for example why is the zip up, get that zip down man, show us the neck and down a bit. That's all i'm sayin

Seriously, just wait. Unless you love grinding above all else, it becomes a chore. There's nice ideas that mitigate some of the JRPG formula nonsense, but the game is padded to hell and back. And the License Board is a ridiculous, awkward solution for building characters.

I love the license board. I'm using the party members I'm not playing with to buy random licenses in wandering lines to the far corners of the map, so between the six characters I already know what pretty much every license square is. This just means that some characters are useless :D They have access to the game's final uber-weapons, but not basic magic and armor

You're still in the honeymoon period. Things will start going down hill in 20 hours or so. You'll realize how small the license board really is and you'll be begging for a better gambit system.

Btw you won't get those uber weapons with regular play

Maybe some of us don't want every game to have some dude's fap fantasy in it when there are girls on screen? If you want to satisfy your hormone level, go play another game... like FFX-2, that would suit your necessity as well.
And it obviously bothered you enough to post about it and say Square Enix is "gay biased"... so whatever.

Don't listen to them, GD. People said that to me and I loved it the whole way through. Keep on keeping on. ;)

About FFXIII...it has a nice looking main character. And she might be some kind of "bad guy" in the same sense AVALANCHE was. I think.

The smart thing to do now is cheat the License Board - it's not too late for you. Go print out a map of it so you don't waste your time and points on ?'s that you won't need. Don't feel guilty about it; it's the designers who are to blame, not you.

Man you are one defensive dude, what's up with that? Obviously the gay biased bit was a joke mate. Relax.

Just sayin that if SquareEnix feels soo at ease to show the male body, why not do the same for the women?

But don't mind me. Now don't come here with the "Go play other games that satisfy your fap fantasy" on me, you just come across as an asshole.

I never had a license points shortage, especially after I got a golden amulet (doubles LP earned for 1 character).

FFXII completely ruined traditional JRPGs for me, I simply can no longer play games with random battles and gambit-less AI. I just can't. I bought Final Fantasy and Brave Story on the PSP and returned both of them yesterday for store credit, I couldn't make it more than an hour into either of them despite how good they might have been on their own merits. So, Justin, you've been warned.

I thought the combat system was perfect for what it was, and just like Kev I loved it from beginning to end. If Matsuno were allowed to do FFXII-2 there are definitely ways he could improve it and take it to the next level (I as well had dreams of preset gambit sheets and if/then statements), but man it was just such a gigantic step forward for JRPGs. The scale of the game, too, you just have no idea how much more there is to explore... It's just an amazing game and I'd love to play it through again but...

Attention Square Enix: Please observe the success of MGS2: Substance and MGS3: Subsistence in non-Japanese territories and notice that yes we like re-releases with expanded/improved content! PLEASE RELEASE FFXII:I IN NON-JAPANESE TERRITORIES DAG NABBIT

But yeah, needless to say I was stoked to hear FFXIII will lack random battles as well. The cinematic flair is also pretty cool, I'm quite excited to see how it turns out

As tnw said its not like they haven't before, and if you really want more just search for some FF hentai.

FFXIII has been canceled. Square-Enix is now focusing on re-releasing FF1-6 on consoles which do not currently have them. When every machine has those games, they're going to remake Mystic Quest.

Ain't gonna front, there was something magical about Mystic Quest

We know that it's going to be in a technological setting mor advanced than seen in any FF game so far.

Funny, it was FFXII that finally convinced me there was nothing fundamentally different about whether or not you were able to see your enemies onscreen prior to battle.

Wow... really? Wandering around an overworld, seeing the screen shatter or blur with a WHOOOSH, seeing enemies and party members fade into the screen, and being prompted over and over and over again for commands isn't fundamentally different from what FFXII did?

It just struck me as incredibly efficient which is something I have a personal tendency to gravitate towards. It made everything fast and exciting while still giving you plenty of room for customization. I can't tell you the rush I got when Gambits first kicked in, it felt like the computer was reading my mind and it was like "Yes, this is what I want in an RPG"

Honestly I don't want to argue with you about it though. I personally loved it, it sounds like you didn't and that's perfectly fine. I'm sick of seeing people tear games to pieces around here

What have you done? Do you want SE to pull an Uncharted? :lol

Jokes aside, I hope developers will cater less to the geek audience with skimpy perfect women.

Aside from the way the summons are setup, FF12 is the best designed FF ever.

Oh, and one thing someone didn't mention about FF13 that is known is that it's for, um, PS3. . . unfortunately. With a bunch of spinoffs for everything but 360.

We know some story details. The world of XIII is divided into 2 areas. Cocoon is an Utopian society where people harnesses the Crystals' power for protection, as well as creating objects, and merging magic with technology. Those who doesn't fit in will be exiled by the government into Pulse, which sits below Cocoon. Pulse is a more dangerous place, where the people lives in constant fear of monster attacks. (Presumably, the train sequence in the trailer was when the people were being sent to Pulse???) Lightning was chosen to destroy this world.

or something like that.

As for field maps and battle systems, some quotes from last month's EGM:
"You will be battling and traversing the field maps with a full party." "It will definitely return to the strategic , turn based style of FFX, but with plenty of intriguing tweaks." "We're also hearing hints that
FFXIII may nix the series' infamously unavoidable random encounters."

From OPM:
Toriyama - "The Active Time Battle system of recent FF has been sped up to its limit in FFXIII. It can't get any quicker than this. Compared with previous FF games, the pace of battles in FFXIII has been drastically increased, but we still managed to retain the tactical ans strategic characteristics of the series."

Final Fantasy XIII is a damn good reason to get a PS3

Kind of like how Final Fantasy X got me to get a PS2...

GOD DAMN YOU SQUARE-ENIX! :lol

It didn't feel like a useless layer to you? It doesn't make the tasks it's handed more efficient, more enjoyable, or more strategic. It's more complicated than 20-year-old solutions in many ways without any reward or reason.

Not nearly as much as we should. ;( SE should really go back to being the well oiled machine it was back in the PS1 days. They were putting out excellent games left and right.

We know its being developed by the Kitase's team so it'll be MUCH better than FFXII.

fixed.

XII was cool, but not worth the 5 years of waiting. The battle system can be pretty addictive but it`s kind of broken and the story and characters suck due to their non-existance.

Once somebody said that FFXII was SE crappy take at Star Wars.

I laughed, because it's kinda true. Even the combat system, people saying it's something completely new and somehow innovative that changed Rpgs...man, the combat system is just like the one in Kotor. I mean yeah sure, it has its differences obviously, but it's not new.

FFXII burned me though, i'm using cheats in FFXIII and every other JRPg i play from now on, i'm fed up with having to spend hours grinding.

Here's some stuff I typed up from a magazine (July 2006):

1. Of the many teams within SE, which one was tasked with creating the first next-gen Final Fantasy? Why, the same folks who made the previous "new Final Fantasy title for the next generation of Playstation!" Namely, the team behind Final Fantasy X for the PS2.

2. Producer Yoshinori Kitase outlines FFXIII's basic concept as the "formal evolution of Final Fantasy. (In) FFX, we tried to conclude and wrap up the traditional RPG. In this game, we'd like to show the next form of RPGs. To be more specific, in the traditional RPG, the game flow is pretty much the same way. You go into a town, talk to people, go out of town, and enter battles. We want to start looking at that flow and revolutionize it in a way that it may surprise people to learn that this is a Final Fantasy game. I'm thinking it will be an extraordinary new form in RPGs"

3. Director Motomu Toriyama on his experience in creating FFX and applying that experience to FFXIII: "We learned how to exceed and evolve the portrayal of the dramatic essence by showing the small changes in expression and emotions from what we did on FFX. I would be lying if I said we would able to go back to the PS2 after creating the FFVII tech. demo for the PS3. "It's always exciting for a creator to be able to build something new on a new platform. We have spend an extraordinary amount of time for preproduction of this game. For example, we made it so that each tree and each sign would have a meaning to it. It's not that we just want to make the visuals realistic; we wanted to develop a fully realized futuristic setting. As it stands, it was inevitable [that we would] rebuild this project for the next-gen platform."

4. To that end, here's what we heard about the combat system: It's still good ol' Active-Time Battle (ATB), except it's been tweaked to be even faster and a bit more "actiony" (as indicated by the trailer). The development team also cryptically mentioned the use of an "added time axis," which could mean anything from timing button presses that pull off special attacks to abilities that alter time with battle.

5. Another big factor in the combat system is the use of the vertical axis. Notice that gray thing on the heroine's finger? That controls gravity. You (or she) snaps it on and off effortlessly. Combine her ability to control gravity with her acrobatics, and you can see how vertical position in combat is now more important than in previous FF titles.

6. Weapon design is being handled by Tetsu Tsukamoto, who worked on the costume design for FFX-2. His experience in creating multiple costume changes for the FFX-2 girl probably help in designing a gun that transforms in a sword.

7. Kitase on the game engine: "A team of experts was formed to develop a special engine with a vast array of elements capable of handling cinematics, advanced audio processing, graphics-engine physics calculation, and special effects rendering. This impressive development platform is called the White Engine."

8. Toriyama on the female character that was shown in the trailer: "I wouldn't say that she's the main character. It just happens to be that she was the character that we shose to feature in the trailer. However, it is true that we wanted to have a strong, independent woman as one of the main characters in the game. To accomplish this, we asked [character designer] Tetsuya Nomura to design a strong and independent female character, both mentally and physically. She was the end result." Nomura interjects," The order I got from Toriyama was to create a muscular and athletic girl. I had a lot of trouble trying to create her."

9. Toriyama on the setting of FFXIII: " The world of FFXIII depicts a level of civilization more advanced than ever seen [before] in the Final Fantasy series. The futurisic world exists in a time when tecnology and magic have combined and developed into a new form. We decided to go for a more futuristic, sci-fi look because we thought that it would fit the new world being portayed on the PS3 and serve as a indicator as to what the future of gaming might be."

10. Coproducer Shinji Hashimoto on the overall nature of the Fabula Nova Crystallis project and its effect of FFXIII: "Consider that development is simultaneously ongoing for three FFXIIIs- each not only on different platforms but [featuring] different worlds and stories that are bound by a common mythology [of the crystal]. By gaining inspiration from this mythology, these independent FFXIIIs evolve uniquely. The Fabula Nova Crystallis project is not a collection of sequels or ports but several original titles that exist alongside each other."

11. Why put such a big emphasis on a freakin' crystal? Kitase answer,"Because the crystal is the symbol of the FF series. The compliation of FFVII [game] has the central theme of [the original] FFVII, but this project is starting from zero. So that's why we thought it would be good to create a centerpiece for this project and freely evolve from there."

12. Chocobos, moogles, and traditional spell names will still be present.

13. FFXIII online? Kitase mentions," It's still to be determined; if anything, it will be an extra feature but it won't be one of the main features."

I'm playing through XII currently and I'm really not enjoying it like I've enjoyed every Final Fantasy game from VII onwards.

The battle system is probably the best new mechanic in the game, while it has a few flaws. It takes out the need for over time spells such as poison, doom and petrify because it's so quick, gambits are very basic (though interesting) and having a three person party just had me using my characters all in the same way (one ranged healer, two close combat fighters). Another question I find myself asking is why couldn't they make a sword sheath animation while running? Why does me character have to stand still to put away his sword?

The licence system is terrible, this is my main problem with the game. I find my characters all going down similar routes, and I know, coming to the end of the game that they are all going to be roughly the same. None of the characters feel special.

Square has done nothing inventive with magic, you just buy it all from shops.

The Quickenings are pretty dull, as are the summons. I basically have a couple of backup characters which I pull out to use Quickenings then put them away because they have no mana.

Lastly, the story and characters are completely forgettable. Which is the main reason I play FF games. I don't think I'll get to the end of this one, simply because the story at the moment is so boring. I'll definately keep playing though, I'm about 15 hours in, maybe it will pick up.

Edit: And where is my card minigame?!
