What do you think will become the 3DS's defining game?

Warioware 3DS.

That series is good at making use of the system it's on.

Really? I seriously seem to remember that all those awesome 'new' games from Nintendo were what had us all so incredibly excited at the time.
I might be wrong, in which case...
what games do you think sold the GBA?

I don't really remember to be honest. I thought the GBA was pretty rubbish compared to GB/C (and later on, the immaculate DS.)

I won't get into arguing about the GBA's sheer awesomeness (:P), however, I am reasonably confident that it was Golden Sun, Fire Emblem and most of all, Advance Wars, that sold the GBA to the masses.

GB & DS were both alive a lot longer than the GBA.

Both have monster hunting as their basic premise. Both are deceptively deep. Both have an aversion to actually evolving or moving the series forward.
From a gameplay standpoint, both rely on multiplayer, and especially local multiplayer.
It is entirely possible that a lot of Pokemon's audience 'graduated' to Monster Hunter. Personally, I would find such a notion rubbish.

yeah, i think they are ultimately very different beasts - though the grindy nature of both does seem to be something that really appeals to Japanese people.

Metroid Dread?

Seriously though, it will be something first party more than likely. No one can ever take advantage of Nintendo consoles they way Nintendo does.

i'm curious about how locked MH4 is - i wonder if it my get shifted depending on the installed 3DS userbase a la the PS3-->Wii move for MH3 ?
Was MH3 ever officially announced for PS3? I never followed the series outside of sales threads and the only reason it was ever on my radar was because of Defuser's hilarious meltdown in the announcement thread.

It took two weeks for MH Portable 3rd to hit 2.6 million sold, it only took Pokemon B/W two days.

The series is huge, but Pokemon is massive.
Pokemon only sold like 1mil more copies than MHP3 right? I don't have numbers, but I think it's something like that. Only counting one version. Something can be said for showing how loyal the fans are with all the different versions selling like gangbusters, but that's hard to quantify.

That was on a system with a like 15 million userbase advantage. It's not outside the realm of possibility that MH4 will sell more than Pokemon. I'm not a fan of either franchise, I'm just stating what I think.

Correct me if my numbers are wrong, but I just looked up some quick stats and they seem to be in the ballpark.

Maybe that's why I never caught onto the system.

They deserved to live a lot longer.

No, you're pretty much right.
On a system with more than one and a half times the userbase, Pokemon's final numbers were 1.5 million more than Monster Hunter Portable 3. However, Pokemon did sell faster, and in fact, continues to show up on Media Create charts to this day, whereas Monster Hunter all but disappeared.

I would say that MK7 is going to be that game just like MKDS was that game. However, I don't think Mario Kart 7 is going to do it alone. Just like I don't think Mario Kart DS did it alone. It was a combination of Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing WW, Tetris DS, and New Super Mario Bros that really won me over on DS. I think by the time Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, and Mario Tennis come out, the 3DS is going to be getting really good. It's going to be that steady stream of games that (hopefully) starts with Super Mario 3D Land that's going to win people over.

You're not wrong, but the thing is, fans of these franchises by the system they're on for them. Userbase advantage usually means little.

it was ghost recon so far, at launch.. and still. maybe the second one will become THE DEFINING GAME. haha. hope they do another one.

nintendo 3ds. ghost recon. if you don't buy this game you're an animal. it's required taste.

lol userbase talk

everyone that wanted pokemon bought a ds and everyone that wanted mh bought a psp

Yeah, basically what I said. Good job Mr. Parrot. *feeds cracker*

Whatever it is, I sure hope it's not just remake of an older game but a brand new original game for the 3DS.

I personally hope it's Super Mario Land 3D

if you can't appreciate a portable snes, you can't appreciate shit

I loved the SNES, was my favorite console. But GBA sucks at SNES games. Sound always sucks and it's missing two whole buttons.

The GBA versions of FF4, FF6 and ALttP were the best ones though :/

gba has the most underrated music ever. guilty gear x was amazing.

and f-zero climax has the best soundtrack in the series.

Defining in a good way? - Nothing
Defining in a bad way? - Steel Diver (embodies what the system was, is and will be- however thats not to say Steel Diver is bad).
Defining in a sales way? - Pokemon
Defining in a fanboy way? - Majoras Mask Port

I think there's a ton of crossover though.

It's all speculation, so I guess there's nothing else to dispute or argue. The Japanese population love their portables, it's a really unique market. Userbase might not be incredibly important, but it's there, and I argue it is somewhat of a factor in these matters.

"Oh hey I heard about this Monster Hunter game but I only had a DS...I'll check this out!"

The MH audience is much like the Metal Gear audience as in the guys who are into MH are REALLY into MH. Basically, there really aren't that many casual MH players, so every time a new game comes out, it's the same people buying it every time and they're pretty much price insensitive. Expect MH4 to see it sell ~2 million, but don't be surprised if it doesn't go far beyond that.

Pokemon, on the other hand, is mostly kids and casual players, so its sales are much more affected by userbase.

Does this have any basis in reality?

It was put on one of Capcom's support lists IIRC.

Yeah. Anything by Gamefreak really. Best developer this side of EAD Tokyo.

Nope.

You don't get to 1.6 million in two days with casual players. They'll buy the game whenever they feel like it. It's the core players that buy it as soon as they can.

Tekken with 3D movie plus 3D game running at 60 FPS in THREE-D.
This is my reason for buying a 3DS so I can crush all the Nintendo loyalists that have no experience with Tekken. :P

Jesus christ do you guys have any idea how much i need Mario Kart 7 hooked to my veins? no you dont.

I need to find a way to get a 3DS overseas before December. Its gonna hurt.

Has anyone said Luigi's Mansion 2 yet? If not I will.

Luigi's Mansion 2 yo. Might be better than SM3D Land!

It will be Nintendo Legacy, the game that shows that all the Nintendo games are in continuity with each other. The world of Hyrule giving birth to the modern Mushroom Kingdom which ends up being overrun by the Koopas and becoming the Lylat System, which then loses to the Primates (direct descendants of Donkey Kong) who later evolve into humans who then get attacked by space pirates. It would be a 3D platformer, adventure game, flight sim, and first person shooter rolled into one and set the standard for future Nintendo products.
