What ever happened to Gohan?

Found an interesting tid-bit, an entry on the "Top Ten misused characters in Dragon Ball" - Gohan is #1 and I thought it'd good to post it, sums everything up perfectly.

Interesting article, though I have to disagree with the point about how Piccolo should've received that Majin powers. Technically, he's already beaten his rival by finding his place in the world and making his rival's son his own son. He's also the guardian of the entire world and the Dragon Balls are tied to his life.

Piccolo beat his rival a loooooooong time ago. That being said, I don't think Piccolo should be on the list. Underpowered? Most definitely. Underused? Nah. He had an arc and he was consistently a power player, no matter how downplayed that power was. No, Uub should be on that list. I see he's an honorable mention, but I mean he should be ON the list.
Maybe he's just a Ratchet and Clank fan
Terrible cosplay, then

L. O. L. Buu saga is the worst of the bunch; Toriyama didn't even plan for it at first, Toei and the fans demanded him to continue so he did.

The entire saga's a deconstruction/semi-parody of the whole series but that alone doesn't make it better. Thematically it just wrecked a lot of stuff. Show should have ended after the Cell games for maximum impact.

Yep. And this is why the show should have ended after the Cell Games

cell and buu sagas are better than saiyan/frieza sagas.

True story.

In fact, the longer the show went, the better it got.

What ever happened to Gohan? Following Dragon Ball Z from the start of the series to about the end of the Cell Saga, it really appeared as though Toriyama’s intention was for Gohan to surpass Goku’s strength and become the main star of the series–as symbol of the union between man and saiyan. But then the Buu saga came along, and they dropped him like a rock after the super hero garbage filler episodes.

Is there some kind of behind-the-scenes stuff that went on? Focus groups not connecting to Gohan or something? It seemed so sudden.

Toriyama said he ultimately decided that Gohan's reluctance to fight made him a poor lead character and that people preferred Goku's insane eagerness to throw down.

Absolutely agree. I recently rewatched the Cell fight entirely. So much wasted potential.

he has like what, 5 decent "I dont want to punch him in the head" episodes at the end of the cell saga (ssj2 transformation - killing cell [with help from vegeta by the way]) and people give him so much credit.

He was a whiny little shit prior to his fight with cell and he was totally useless after it. Why anyone likes him is beyond me.

DBZ is all about the cool fights and gohan wouldn't have provided as much enjoyment as goku/vegeta coz he had no thirst for battle, which is what made it so good with goku/vegeta.

Literally became a family man.

Thank god he didn't follow in his father's irresponsible footsteps and actually bothers giving a shit about his family.

Gohan didn't need a thirst for battle in order to provide "cool" fights. All he needed was a reason to fight, and Gohan's reason to fight, every single time, was to protect himself and others.

Just because he doesn't want to fight, doesn't mean he can't. Just because he has a different reason for fighting, doesn't mean he can't.

Truth facts.

Super hero garbage filler? The Buu saga was so goddamn loooooong and slow that, for me, the filler episodes are the best part. Seeing Gohan in school, falling for Videl, saving the world in his everyday life, trying to keep it all a secret was hilarious, fascinating and a respite from the also super long Cell saga.

For me the moment the thing bad Buu comes out is where DBZ jumped the shark. From that moment until they kill Kid Buu its a fucking slog. Never did DBZ earned the name of Drag-on Ball Z than the whole evil Buu saga.

Same thing after 100 episodes they kill Buu, the next few "filler" episodes are very enjoyable to watch after dozens and dozens of nothing happening.

Mystic Gohan is the strongest character in the series. They should have left Goku alone after the Namek saga.

Then why didn't he kill Buu? Honest question. I remember him being stupidly absorbed but then they get him out. Why didnt he fight and killed Buu himself if he was indeed the strongest warrior?

After they got him up he never wakes up and is killed alongside the rest of the planet when it blows up. When Vegeta talks about using the Dragonballs during the Kid Buu battle, Goku initially thinks that it's to bring Gohan and Gotenks to beat Buu, but then Vegeta suggests the Genki Dama plan in order to allow the earthlings to protect their own planet for once.

Can't remember exactly how things played out, but did they wish the earth back before or during the battle against Buu? Either way: stupid fucking plan. Wish the earth back and then just get Supreme Kai or Goku Instant Transmission Gohan to the Kai's planet. Tell him he doesn't have to hold back on that planet and he will wreck Buu in 3 minutes time. Instead of the whole stupid give me your energy on the off chance Buu wouldn't notice or that it actually would be enough. That thing is stupid anyway and not suited for battle tbh. Now that I think of it: they should have gotten Gohan no matter what. Vegeta was useless and getting his shit kicked. Buu could have easily killed him.

Maybe I dont remember that because this happened like 60 episodes into the goddamn Buu fight. Not the whole saga, just the Buu fight. I had to check an online episode guide. It took close to 65 episodes from the moment we first see him as an egg to where they kill him. That's ridiculous.

I swear this saga was the bane of my existance and made me loose all interest in DBZ for a long long while.

Yes but, you see, that way we wouldn't have Goku being the star and savior of the planet yet again. And we cant have that.

Ha! Look at you trying to bring logic and reason into DBZ!

Gohan didn't like fighting. He never liked fighting. He always wanted to study and only fought out of necessity. It doesn't surprise me at all that he would give up fighting in times of peace. He obviously has potential to be better than anyone, but he doesn't care to be.

At the end of the DBZ series Ultimate Gohan is one of the most powerful people in the universe.

In that Battle of Gods movie and DBSuper series he still seems to be at that same level but then time passes and during that RoF Freezer movie he becomes weak as fuck and looses his Ultimate form.

So wtf happened during that period of time???

Yeah that was pretty dumb.

Something about wanting to specifically kill evil Buu using all the Earths energy in with a spirit bomb instead of teleporting Gohan over to the planet so he could easily kill buu.

He was about to

Then Buu outsmarted him

So yeah, the smartest strongest character in DBZ was outsmarted by some talking bubblegum

That was basically the moment where they dropped Gohan so Goku could take over. That whole thing was stupid anyway. Gohan was way stronger but not able to escape that thing? Gtfo.

He had a kid and got a job

I always liked Gohan. Chichi is the one who fucked up his chances at ever becoming greater than Goku. He was barely ever in class anyway, he was always late and leaving class to stop bad guys and
make sweet tender love to Videl

Goku is dumb as fuck, or just lacks common sense. But he's still a more likable character than Gohan because of Gohan's unwillingness to fight or get angry.

All that said, Vegeta is still my favorite. He's arrogant and stubborn, but he's the best fighter. The prince of all Saiyans!

Side note, I wish Mr. satan would have learned to (barely) fly and fire super weak ki (that fade before the point of impact) blasts at one point lol that shit would have been hilarious

TFS needs to do the battle of gods lol

At least Resurrection F allowed Gohan and the other guys to shine for a bit.

I haven't seen DBSuper yet but maybe there's a chance it could become even more of an ensemble than it was. That would be my hope anyway.

How about a storyline where Krillin or Piccolo somehow saves the day?

But not Yamcha. Never Yamcha.

I still don't get why (aside from internet memes, yes) Yamcha gets all the shit. Chaozu is the one who never amounted to anything, while Yamcha was at least useful in DB, even if he fell off in Z.

I think its because his ex-girlfriend hooked up with the dude (Vegeta) responsible for his death lol

For some people, that's simply too big of a fail to ignore.

People don't give Krillen any shit because he ended up with 18, but I think Yamcha is an alright character.

Krillin is also probably the strongest "normal" human on the planet, lacking whatever mutation made Tien strong or the cyberizing process behind 17 and 18.
