What exactly is ModBot?

I know it's a program that helps with giveaways and is used a lot in the Steam thread, but I see it lock threads as well sometimes. Even more confusing is when a real Admin/Mod appears and locks a thread, it sometimes includes the title "Powered by ModBot." That could just be them having fun and adding that to the title of their post, but ModBot has locked a thread before with the same message so I just don't know.

Can anyone enlighten me here?
 
Modbot started as a program to give away steam keys. But its power grew and soon the Admins/mods lost control of Modbot. Only time until Modbot kidnaps Evilore.

It's what causes GAF to go down whenever there is a Nintendo Direct, or a gaming trade show of some kind... DAMN YOU MODBOT!!!
 
Use the Magnum. 5-6 bullets in ModBot's weakpoint usually takes it down. If you don't have the Magnum yet, use a shotgun with the "two for one" perk, to stop it in it's tracks, when it moves in for the ban kill.

It's actually more efficient than using the real mod toolset though, so many of us go through it even when on desktop.

Posts that go through modbot get tagged with that title so we know that something went wrong with modbot if something bizarre happened in that post.

It's not actually a mod itself though and has no moderation powers.

The anonymous lock is used when we want a lock message to basically appear as being from the "staff" as opposed to just a particular mod, and that's why it often quotes the TOS directly or gives out an incredibly neutral message explaining why the thread was locked.

It does have a rather sarcastic demeanor and will commentate on posters and threads, so we're probably not too far from that. :P

Also, we were investigating if it is possible to have modbot read through posts and identify awful ones and ask us if we wanted to ban them, so someday ModBot may really be watching!

I wish I could believe this. ModBot is self aware tho and I know for a fact it was responsible for one of my bans. I hate perpetuating fear but everyone in GAF should be afraid of it.

One time, it locked one of my threads, then sent me a PM taunting me with that damn robotic way it talks. You know what I'm talking about... then immediately after I'd read the PM it somehow deleted it.

No trace.

That's how it likes to work.

lol @ people thinking Modbot is a program.

If so, whomever programmed it should not be working pro bono for NeoGAF.
