What franchise(s) do you think need to go into retirement?

Either put the radar back in MGS or stop the series. Seriously, how could you take something so integral to the gameplay out of a series?
MGS3 Subsistence should help remedy this with the 3D camera, ie - no walking around a blind corner and getting shot up.

Glad they decided to fix that the 2nd time around. And it will only cost you $49.99!

Tales series should definitely slow down, but I don't want Namco to retire the series. Just focus on quality over quantity :\

Metroid and Zelda would be my nominees. Both of these series used to be leaders in coming up with creative challenges and gameplay mechanics, and now they're pure formula. There have been far too many entries in both series lately and they all involve collecting the same power-ups (hookshot, Morph Ball, etc.) to solve the same puzzles over and over. Actually, if they came up with some major new direction (as Majora's Mask did), I'd be happy to see the games continue as I used to adore them, but right now they're just nothing but the same thing over and over.

I'm including Metroidvanias in with Metroid :)

Oh, and everything Megaman, but I haven't cared about Megaman in years, so that bothers me less. Whereas I used to love Zelda and Metroid, so it's frustrating to see the games so average these days.

I suppose a lot of people will take issue with my picks, but I have to take issues with nominating Final Fantasy. I don't think FF needs to be retired at all, as the "main" FF series has always stayed fresh and kept introducing new elements. Every numbered FF game is substantially different from the last and usually introduces major new mechanics and "systems." The series is still an influential innovator; whenever FF does something new, quite a few other developers immediately rip it off :P

Now, if we're counting FF VII spin-offs as a franchise, then that's another story... :)

How about franchises that need to come OUT of retirement?

Shadowgate/Deja Vu (imagine these types of games on REVOLUTION! =))
Adventures of Lolo
Kid Icarus
Earthbound
Pilotwings
ActRaiser

They should have a World War II game with aliens.

Please tell me that hasn't actually been made yet.

Next-gen ActRaiser would be so cool. I want Bubble Bobble on my DS too damnit.

Remember I-8? That Insomniac ps3 game shown at e3? It looked like a wwII themed shooter but then an 8 legged monster showed up. This could be what you're after.

no franchise really needs to go into retirement (unless they have always absolutely sucked), just some of the game designers and mechanics behind them. Any franchise can be reborn if you put the right people in charge.

Whomever said Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid was correct. If Halo 3 is as un-innovative as Halo 2 then add Halo to the mix as well. And Mario is similarly teetering on irrelevance.

MGS and MGS2 are the only two Metal Gear games that have the radar, and with the latter it doesn't work until you find and use the map node.

Sly Cooper
Ratchet and Clank
Jak & Daxter

All whored by Sony to the maxxx. I hope ND's next game is something new, I will kill myself if its another Jak title.

I can understand not liking it but how can something be irrelevant when every single game with him in it more or less sells one millon copies?

Agreed, though I wouldn't mind seeing another Ratchet on next-gen. Just finished Up Your Arsenal and thought it was the best of the 3. Insomniac knows gameplay, they should just take some time off with that FPS they're working on and come back in a few years with Ratchet 4.

Who the fuck was expecting Halo 2 to be innovative?

GTA - 3 games per generation was one too many.
Need For Speed, Burnout, Bond games, Prince of Persia, Tom Clancy's whatever. - You don't need to release one every goddamn year.
Metroid Prime - The second one came too soon after the first, Retro should do something else for a while.

Why bitch about it? If you don't like a series, just don't play it!
There comes a point when the sequels are shamelessly bad (FFX-2 anyone?)

Agreed, though I don't necessarily think the series should retire. I just think they got greedy, and saturated the market. Which may have hurt the series in the long run.

My nominee - a repeat:

MGS - Kojima needs to tie up the loose ends in the story and give us something fresh from another genre. The stealth action genre is almost played out at this point, though it can't be blamed on one series. Bow out gracefully.

I'm willing to give Mario, Metroid and Zelda another chance next-gen since Revolution can possible launch them in new directions. Metroid has only had one sequel since its radical transformation with Prime and in the main series Zelda had only one disappointment in The Wind Waker, so I don't see how they have had too many entries. Mario is probably the most at risk even, but that's probably because the platforming genre in general is exhausted. The same can be said for most fighters really.

NONE OF THEM.

I despise this jaded horseshit attitude where people get tired of a series they once enjoyed and then come to the conclusion that the developers should stop making it, as if nobody else still enjoys it. GO PLAY SOMETHING ELSE.

Mario [X] (not the main games, the fluff)
3D Sonic
Nocturne*
House of the Dead
Need for Speed**
Tekken/DOA

* I doubt this old game will ever see a sequel, however :b
** When did this series completely loose its focus?

edit: I'll agree with Mankey on this one...not that I don't want to ever see another in these series...just that I'm not bloody likely to buy a future installment

I'll not name any franchises that actually help to keep their respective companies in business. Such franchises include Pokemon, Mario, Sonic, Tony Hawk, Tomb Raider, Virtua Fighter, Madden, Metal Gear, Mega Man, Zelda, Resident Evil, Soul Calibur, Need For Speed, Halo, Dragon Quest, Street Fighter, Castlevania, or Final Fantasy.

Despite what you might think of all the above franchises, they are essential franchises and aren't going away, nor do they need to go away.

But they can do away with Crash Bandicoot. He's gone from million-seller to non-existance in less than a generation.

People are bidding to retire MGS and Final Fantasy when games like Unlimited Saga are still being made? And I assume you aren't talking about just games with high numbers, otherwise Tony Hawk, Dragon Warrior, DMC, and many others would be in there. I think someone is bitter...

Tony Hawk, if they keep making them like TH:Underground 2. If they make a nextgen Tony Hawk:Simulator Skateboarding with some real innovative play mechanics and graphics (Realism rather than cartoony) Then I would definately forget about my want for the franchise to die.

Underground 2 was the knife through the franchises heart.

QFT. That game was disasterous. I had more fun with THPS 1 than any future game in the series. It just felt so cool at the time. This "viva la bam" bullshit they added in THUG2 really took it to another atrocious level, IMO.

Fire Prowrestling

Seriously, Spike, enough already. I don't think I can take another entry into this series with a bunch of minor improvements and several major oversights.

Mario
MGS (Die already, next MGS, you'll be playing as as Snake on a ventillator :lol)
Virtual Fighter (Don't bore me anymore please)
Tekken (As much as I like Tekken, please innovate the series)
Final Fantasy (They should have stopped after Tactics)
Dragon Quest (Stop the generic Japanese console rpgs please)
NFS series (Please innovate or die)
GT series (Polyphony work on making the series actually fun please. I could give a shit about the graphics and the 600+ licensed cars and customization if the game isn't fun.)
