What game consoles have died on you?

PlayStation 3 launch unit - YLOD that I was never able to fix

Xbox 360 launch unit - lasted until Gears 2 was released but ultimately suffered a RROD

PlayStation 2 - Ran into disc read errors but, as it turns out, this is easily fixable so it was fine.

3DO - Cracked gear in the drive unit (which I replaced). I just discovered a failing capacitor (which I need to replace).

One of my four Saturn consoles - no video, nothing. Not really sure what's wrong and haven't taken the time to diagnose.
 
My Nintendo Wii died on me after little over a year, broken vid card.

My launch window Xbox 360 also died, six years later.

Oh and I had the disk spewing error on PS4, so I had that one replaced.
 
SNES - as a kid I put a coin inside it through the eject button. Simple repair at a local shop.

360 - RROD. Sent it in.

PS3 - console didn't die, but the blu ray drive did. Bought a replacement.

I think everything else I own is fine. Genesis, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, GC, GBA, DS, 3DS, N3DS, PSP, Vita, Wii, Wii U, PS4, Xbone.
 
PS2 disk read error, though I wish I had done some research and fixed it myself (it's an easy fix) before buying a new one.

PS3 60 gb. This one hurts. YLOD like most people, but I was able to re-flow it and get it running again. Unfortunately that's only a temporary fix and doesn't fix what causes the YLOD.

On PC I've had a couple video cards get fried. First an X800 pro, and later an X850 XT due to a bad AGP port.
 
Xbox - hard drive died
Xbox 360 - audio visual port crapped out

The only 2 to ever crap out on me and I have owned every major console since the NES. Ironically, my X1 has a really spotty disc drive -_-. MS is lucky I like their games, online service, and controllers better than the others because the hardware certainly doesnt keep me coming back.
 
PS1 - I don't know what it's called but the little bit in the middle of the CD drive that you click the CD on broke. I tried to fix it by gluing it back together but as a dumb kid at the time, I missed one of the pieces. I'm not sure why I didn't try to break it back off and then re-glue it with the piece back in but I got a PS2 a few months later, so I didn't really care all that much about it.

PS3 - I had one of the first PAL models, with partial PS2 backwards compatibility, and it must've YLOD'd on me like 5 times over the years. The fourth or so time they offered me a PS3 Slim in exchange but since there was no extra compensation for the lack of PS2 BC, I said no. But by the fifth time, I didn't give a shit, I just wanted a reliable PS3, so I took the PS3 Slim.

DS Lite - After not using it for a couple of years, I booted it back up a year or so ago and the bottom screen is fucked. It'll look fine for 10 minutes or so after a cold boot but then things go downhill really fast and eventually you can barely see anything on it. I recently bought a cheap replacement because while I do have a 3DS (also bought recently), I wanted a standard DS Lite as well just in case.
 
Fortunately only my NES.
A few years ago it simply refused to read cartridges anymore.

For me, it was a miracle Nintendo announced the NES Classic. Especially when it has 13 out of the 17 games I own for the original console.
 
Only the one for me, my PS3. In terms of breaking it broke at the best and worst time. I was replaying the entire Mass Effect trilogy as I had purchased all DLC. It died immediately after I beat the Citadel DLC for ME3 BUT i never had a chance to sync my trophies and as somewhat of a trophy hunter it pains me to see that 0%.. I got to experience it though so i can't be mad at my old guy PS3 :)

Yes, really. I've had three original Xboxes, three Xbox 360s, and my current Xbox One, and only the launch 360 ever failed.

Perhaps I should have added that it's in comparison to Sony's poor hardware. Yet I rarely, if ever, see them criticized in the manner MS takes it.

Hell, it isn't uncommon to see people outright refuse to buy an Xbox One citing the 360's RROD fiasco. But all those junky Playstations? It's okay because brand loyalty or some shit.
 
A few PS2s, a few Xbox360s, and a PS3. Never lost a handheld (had all Nintendo/Sony handhelds), or a Nintendo/Sega console.

Never even lost a controller.
 
OG PlayStation eventually had disc drive issues. I would have to sometimes put it on its side or tilt it in weird directions. Literally the only console I've ever had hardware issues with.
 
360: 3 different red rings of death
PS3: Yellow light one time and disc drive stopped working another
Wii: Smelt something burning, the Wii's power cable felt incredibly hot so I turned everything off and when it had cooled down the entire console had stopped working
Dreamcast: system would restart randomly
3DS: Circle Pad got stuck

I've replaced all my systems but it sucks when something like this happens
 
PS3 couple of weeks ago, bought pre owned only that day and it was already broken.
N64 no idea what happened to that, it just stopped working.
Gamecube my brother fucked with the thing, the laser inside so it stopped reading discs.
PSP cracked screen.

And I think thats it.
 
PC Engine GT and two Xbox 360's.

I never had a rrod personally, one was an E74 and the other just used to freeze up after five minutes until it froze and never worked again.

My Wii went back to Nintendo so often that the warranty got extended from launch until around when Skyward Sword came out. Bricked, ate discs, system wouldn't wake when inserting disc and finally graphics corruption. I think they gave me a newer model the last time because it didn't get nearly as hot in standby mode. I don't know if the fourth time was a charm or maybe I just wised up and stopped using WiiConnect24. My OG 360 still works flawlessly, go figure.
 
none really. my PS3 stopped working but that was my own fault for trying to change the thermal paste and use a heatgun on it. i was trying to prevent the YLOD. i don't know if i just fried it with the heat gun or applied way too much thermal paste that ended up on the motherboard.

my first PS4 arrived with a broken disc drive. that doesn't count right? my replacement has been going strong ever since.
 
I have been fortunate enough to never have a system die on me. I even had a launch 360 and never experienced the Red Ring of Death.

I, however, did buy a refurbished PS2 back in the day from GameStop and what a mistake that was, because it never worked and couldn't read a single game. I bought it for Final Fantasy X and it would always get stuck during the boat ride where Tidus learns Jecht's move / the team is attacked by Sin.
 
Playstation 1: my first one could read discs only if upside down. My second console just stop reading discs at some point.

Playstation 2:
fitst one was bulky model. Stopped reading discs at some point. it was worst with discs with blue layer. Sometimes I had to tey for hours to get Marvel Vs Capcom 2 to work. I fraking hated that console.
My second one was a slim model. DVD player just stop working one day.

Meanwhile my old Snes, N64, Sega Saturn, Game boy (bw, color, advance) Nintendo Game Cube, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS lite, 3DS and even the Xbox360, all work perfectly fine.
Snes even survived a fall from stairs.
Sega Saturn could even read pizzas. There's no burned or heavily scratched game that failed to work.
 
I've owned Atari 2600, nes, Sega, gameboy, SNES, genesis, n64, GameCube, Wii, 360 and xone.

Only console that ever died was the 360... Twice.
 
My PS2 slim stopped reading disks.

I guess my 3DS as well, but I don't think 'literally broke in two when I dropped it' counts as a console actually dying.
 
PS3, just 5 weeks ago. Game discs wouldn't read and then it made an eject sound but never where's the disc. Pretty much went through every potential solution Sony threw at me with no luck. Ah well.

Least it put its money's worth in for all the years I had it, but I'm still bugged it died. Still had some backlog left on it. 😭
 
Only my Launch 360.

But I know for a fact that my PS1 and PS3 died 6 months and 12 months respectively after I sold them (was feeling half bad about it as I sold them to friends).

For the rest, I don't know, I'm usually selling them when I don't need them anymore. The one that held the longest without replacement thus far is the Wii (launch model)

And kind of a ds lite. Snapped it nearly in two but managed to salvage it by duck-tapping it together. It lived but only worked if you held it at a very particular angle. So semi-dead i guess.

PS3 20 GB Fat yellow lighted on me.

5 XBox 360's that Red ringed on me.

Sega Saturn no longer reads discs.

PS3 Slim no longer reads discs.

Sega CD used to constantly freeze at the sound of a sneeze until I used the eraser trick to clean the chip on it and it never froze again.

I've had 8 PSOne's that had disc reading issues and yes, I am very gentle and take care of my hardware and 99% of my retro games look brand new.

Original XBox disc drive used to scratch up my games badly.
 
PS3, power surge. Had to take it to a repair shop to get the PSU replaced.

No other failures over:

NES/SNES/N64/GC/WII/WIIU/GB/GBC/GBA/GBM/DS/DSL/DSI/3DS/3DSXL/N3DS/PSX/PSP/VITA/X360/MULTIMEGA/SS/DC

For partial fails, my brother's PS2 laser went bad and he could only play certain discs ( no blue ones I think). My launch day wii had a non functioning wiimote.

My 360 was ok because I waited for Jasper. I even got the resi red one to make absolutely sure I got Jasper.
 
Only a launch model of Xbox 360. Not the RROD, something else. Replaced the cables but still no picture.

And my present PS Vita is showing signs of giving up. Otherwise I've never had any issues and I own about 15 consoles or so.
 
PlayStation 1 died a few years in, the disk wouldn't spin any more.

I had two PlayStation 2s die on me fist one about 2 years in the second died about three years ago.

My OG Xbox died a few years ago, just stopped booting up.

and last but not least my Xbox 360 died a bunch and was sent back a bunch before I ended up grabbing the S model, that one is still going strong.

Oh and my SNES died some time between boxing up in 04 and buying a house in 08.
 
My original phat PS2 wouldn't read discs after a while. Sent it in to Sony and they fixed it.

My phat PS3 died as well with the YLOD. I tried doing the hair dryer trick and it worked for a sec but I just went and bought a new PS3.
 
My SNES died when I tried to use a universal adapter to play an American cart. So I killed it really :(
360 got Red ringed so I threw it in the trash and bought a PS3.
My Gamecube is still going strong after buying it second hand over 10 years ago.
 
XBOX 360, multiple times. RROD.
PS3, bricked after updating for 24 hours.
So weird that you had to call for help ... I was used to just "blowing" into the machine and it was good-to-go!

O well ... This is where I learned to have patience while calling support.

Microsoft was fine. "Just send the XBOX to us sir and we'll have it fixed in no-time!"

Sony on the other hand;
"I really don't care if this product is still under warranty. The update was started by your hand and now the console is bricked. There's nothing we can do about it. I'm afraid you'll have to go out and buy a new one".
*2 weeks later*
"I'm sorry sir. Our employee has been given a warning and a 2 week leave. We took the liberty to look into the created file after repeated calls. We have decided to give you a new PS3 Slim model once we have received the older PS3 model. Sorry for the inconvienence!"

... "but ... I bought a new one".

"O. That's unfortunante and good at the same time. I'll have to discuss this again with my supervisor. I'll get back to you".

Mind you, that was 5 years ago. Still waiting for the call.
 
I had one RROD on 360 which MS fixed. The console felt like it was dying a few years later so I replaced it with a slim.

Both PS2s I had the laser stopped reading disks eventually

It didn't die but the hinges went on the original DS
