What game consoles have died on you?

One xbox 360 RRoD'ed. The second might have if it wasn't burgled, but that was a result really as the insurance company bought me a Black Elite 120bg to replace the white 20gb.

Cheers Mr Burglar!!

My first gen 360 - RRoD after not even two years - was promised a replacement and all I got was the same old console (pre-HD port, only component HD) refurbished, haven't been trusting Microsoft on consoles ever since
My first PS4 was defective right out of the box. Got a replacement that has been working fine for more than two years.

Rest of my consoles have been running great since forever, particular highlights would be an old PS1 (from 1998), my PS2 (slim from 2006) and my PS3 (40GB fat PS3 that I bought second hand in ebay in 2010). One of the main reasons why I went with a PS4.

I can only think of two, which is remarkable, because I'm old. Both were 360 launch units. The first one had a RRoD and got replaced by a second one, which had a harddrive error. MS were very good about it, though. They replaced them quickly and without argument.

I'm really surprised to hear the OPs N64 dies to.. I've had mine forever and it truly is a tank.

I went through about 4 Xboxes.

PS1, went from on its side to upside down to just dead as the laser struggled to work.

PS2 fat, disc tray stopped opening.

Dreamcast, don't remember what went wrong though.

X360, RRODed. Replacement went strong for a good 4 years afterwards though and survived a trip over the pacific to be my JPN DVD player before being retired.

Never had a Nintendo console break down on me, although I didn't buy a home console after the SNES and my DS had crap hinges that didn't make it unplayable but were gross to look at.

Both my Original Xboxes still works

My original Xbox 360 RROD, my next one was a Falcon, and it still works. Got a Slim too and it still works. But I've 'handled' many RROD 360s from fellow local forum members who wanted me to put this small fan and switch that temporarily cooked and fixed those early 360s.

Xbox One is still here, and the free PS3 from my TV purchase still here.

Zero. I've never had a console die on me. Well, my old phat ps3 died because it got hit by lightning, but that doesn't count. I guess I've been very lucky, or probably because I don't spend countless hours gaming.

A fat PS2. The original model, at one point it wouldn't read discs anymore and I had to send it in.

I fear my PS3 is next, its almost 5 1/2 years old, but still works with no trouble.

Xbox 360 had the infamous red ring of death. Had it repaired/replaced within two weeks. Died on me while starting up that Naruto game from UbiSoft.

My first 3DS died on me because of a faulty wlan component that froze my system within seconds when I booted it up.

My DS worked 100% of the time but the case had a few cracks and the hinges broke.

My first Gameboy died on me when it wasn't even a year old.

That's pretty much it.

Two PS3s. The first one had the YLOD and had to go. The second one lasted for a good five years before the blu-ray drive packed up. And this wasn't the slim version, this was the original fat console (which I still wish I could've kept hold of it).

I lost an OG xbox due to hard disk failure (mainly due to halo 2) and multiple xbox 360's. My ps3 60GB phat is still going strong, but it was never used heavily.

20+ years of gaming.

Around 25-30 consoles.

I take care of my electronics like the most paranoid person. I dust off every day, keep everything as cool as possible, etc.

Never had any console die on me.... until the piece of junk 360 (falcon board).

I did everything to prevent this.

- Never placed it vertically.
- Always kept it horizontally with extra rubber pads to keep it more elevated so more air flows underneath.
- I had a special corner just for it, one with too much room around it where some fresh air from the nearby window would always make it the coolest place in the room.
- I always installed games on the hard disc so the DVD wouldn't spin, producing less heat (and noise). If both discs needed (GTA5) i would install the play disc on a USB stick.
- Always letting it warm up a bit before i actually start playing. And after the game ended, i was letting it idle for a couple of minutes before i turn it off. To make the changes in temperature smoother.
- Never played games on it for more than 3 hours straight. Never played games during the hottest days of summer, without air conditioning being on. Overall, this got the lowest play time of any other main console i ever had.

And yet, it still died, shortly after the warranty expired, leaving me with a bunch of games i couldn't play anymore unless i would give Microsoft extra money to buy another piece of junk time bomb console. Fuck that.

Let's count:
3 PS3s CECHC03 and 04 models (the infamous European FAT 60GB backwards compatible model). Two of them had been repaired but died few months later. They had their fans replaced with 19 blade fan from early Japanese models (it was said that it cools internal better than the 15 blade fan that the european consoles shipped with) and had their thermal paste replaced by Arctic MX4 paste. After the third model died I decided to buy another Slim (I sold mine to buy 60GB FAT) and buy separate PS2.

The only console I've head die on me was a Gamecube. I was gaming heavily and I think the motor just... died.

I never got bit by the RROD bug, although I have replaced the power brick for my newest xbox 360 because it started buzzing really loudly. I think my Xbox One'e brick is starting this too. Makes me not even want to get an S, to be honest.

Edit: I think my Dreamcast is on its way out. I need to try that laser replacement mod.

TBH I'm rather surprised that after gaming for 32 years I can only recall 3 consoles actually die on me.

I had 2 x RROD Xbox 360s and 1 YLOD launch PS3.

One of my original Playstation 1 consoles is also a bit iffy after being dropped down some stairs but it works 80% of the time.

Considering the amount of consoles, handhelds and computers I've had in that time that's very low fail rate.

Several PS3's, maybe 5 or 6 YOLD

XB360, had about 4 RROD.

Each unit was repaired. MS repaired the 360 under the free extended warranty. I had to buy a warranty from Sony.

Out of pure mechanical failure - only my PS2, not a launch system but was a refurb. And even that still technically works, just the disc drive sucks. I was partway through Persona 3 around when it came out and during every social link/cutscene/whatever I had to get up and eject/re-insert the disc multiple times. Just said fuck it and bought a slim PS2. But I gave my old one to my parents and they actually had it hooked up playing DVDs the last time I was there.

As a kid I lent my Genesis to my sister's boyfriend because I'm an idiot and it came back slightly broken. Knowing what I do now about that console it was an easy fix, but back then all I knew was that the video connector on the back didn't work unless you jiggled it a bit. And that eventually led to it breaking entirely.

My NES was basically unusable by the time I lost track of it. But you could still technically make it work, you just had to have the Game Genie in.

But yeah even my dirty ass flea market consoles have all held up. Bought my 360 in 2008, used it a LOT, still works.

I've had so many dead 360s. I'm actually not sure how many anymore. Maybe 7? But here in Norway warranty laws are excellent, so I only ever paid for one. It was still a hassle to send it to Microsoft all the time.

NES: several times. No idea what the deal was with this system but if you borrowed cartridges from people that had a bad system yours would be infected as well.

Genesis. My own fault for the cartridge swapping trick.

PSX-Lens went.

360-RROD of course.

My first PS2 started getting disc read errors after several years of having it. I've gotten 3 more since then, 2 of which both stopped reading discs within a few weeks and the last of which can't read PS1 discs. No other console I've had has ever stopped working.

I've had virtually all of them from the 2600 on and the only system to ever die was the fat PS3. I managed to revive it temporarily with the heat trick to get my saves thankfully.

I have owned.

NES
Megadrive
Playstation
Playstation 2
Playstation 3 (fatty + slim)
Playstation 4
Xbox 360
PSP
Vita
Wii
PSTV

I have 0 broken consoles.

Three Xbox 360's. Either RRoD or disc tray went out. Eventually gave up replacing them with Microsoft and bought a brand new one. No issues since.

Either you were doing something to them in your sleep or that's some horrifically bad luck

The PS3/360 generation was the first time I've ever had issues with consoles. I've had every Nintendo, Sony and MS console. Hopefully all my bad luck was contained to just those.

MS repaired my console, but Sony gave me a refurbished unit each time. Maybe that had something to do with the increased failure on the PS3.

2 PS1s (both stopped reading discs), DS Lite (broken L button, touchscreen had issues), Xbox 360 (2 dead hard drives; 1 original, 1 slim... no RRODs though).

Everything else has been rock-solid IIRC, especially cartridge systems (less moving parts definitely contributes to that).

Surprisingly, I can only think of two consoles that have died on me over the years. They were:

Xbox 360 - RROD after playing FFXI during a thunderstorm. I was able to get it back up for a bit before it inevitably died.

Playstation 4 - I got a Playstation 4 on launch day and had it delivered to me whilst at work. I got to spend the entire day just staring at the beautiful machine before heading home to plug it in. I got home, set everything up, turned on the PS4 and... nothing came on my TV. After searching online and trying everything imaginable, I was unable to fix things myself.

Turned out that my PS4 had the issue where it just failed to boot up entirely. I called Amazon and they could only offer a refund as the console was out of stock. Every store in my area was out of stock as well. I called Sony and found they had an estimated month-long waiting period for repairs. In the end I just gave up, returned it to Amazon for a refund and bought an Xbox One on launch day instead.

Original PS2 just stopped reading discs after about 8 years or so, ended up replacing it with a used PS2 slim I think.

PS3 disc drive broke after only about 2~3 years of use and had to get it repaired.

My OG Xbox gave up on me, but it went through moves from college to grad school to two different states for full-time work. I miss the bastard, though. I need to spend forty bucks on a replacement, though all my data is gone because I never backed it up to external memory. Hours and hours of memory (and music!) that are lost to my own stupidity.

That's the only console that has ever died on me, but with how much I used it, I understand.

EDIT: Oh shit, and my first 360 after a year, but that's so common that I didn't even really consider it.

360 (rrod), Gamecube (disc drive), N64 (no video).

The N64 happened this week!!! It powers on, but no picture :*(

It's my original N64 from launch!!!

I'm devastated..haha...seriously though, I feel a bit sad.

Playstation - disc reader got busted

Xbox 360 - Red Ring

Nintendo DS - flat cable has been ripped when i tried to dismantle the ds to change his case
