• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

What game has the best feel to it, for you?

  • No Rest for the Wicked - Probably the best feeling melee combat I've seen in an isometric perspective. So many other isometric action-rpgs you're blowing through guys like a Musou game, but this makes each strike feel impactful, and the vertical level design handled really well in that perspective.
  • Infamous: Second Son - I love how each power set has its own traversal abilities that makes use of the environment in a different flow. You start with bursts of speed using vents, and then chef's kiss the neon powers where with upgrades you can just weave through everything without slowing down.
  • Red Faction: Guerilla - still the most enjoyable use of destruction in any game for me. The physics system is insanely impressive on that older hardware, the degree that you can just bypass or make your own way never stops being satisfying, and the unique backpack powers in multiplayer were so much fun.
  • Lord of the Rings - Battle for Middle Earth 1-2 - Very specific reason, and that it's still the most satisfying RTS for doing a pincer cavalry charge to blow through enemies, and these exaggerated physics that send them flying.

P.S. Suckiro is a shallow rhythm game masquerading as an action game.

Only one mention of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and it was in a list post.

But seriously, the feel of the game is so smooth and so rarely emulated--let alone surpassed--decades later.

Damn I should've mentioned this. It is a top 5 game of all time for me so yes, you are right. It deserves to be on my list.

With this question my mind went to walk/run cycles and the pressure on the stick applied to have the character do so.

First game that came to mind was Horizon series - I'm not even really that into them; Inbeatbthe original and DLC, but like many, didn't get hooked by Forbidden West, so I barely made it outside the intro zone.

But the feeling of pressing the left stick - the dead zone calibration mixed with the character's animations and responsiveness when doing so- made me feel very immersed.

But more recently- Silksong and Nioh 3; the have that mind-had controller sync that happens where, once you've learned the game's mechanics and flow, it's like your hands and mind sync up and the character on screen is in lockstep.

It's not popular around here, but I like Horizon Zero Dawn. I enjoy the environments and the way combat works. I like the character movement as well. It's a game I return to repeatedly, as a way to just relax and have fun.

It is a bit awkward to control. The inputs for specials seem to fail a quarter of the time and continuously chaining uppercut and bat dash is challenging. The shield cancel back dash is a double edged sword. On top of that wolf has such an awkward jump trajectory. I still love the mobility with Richter but I would be lying if I said it was not better in Portrait of Ruin and there was no room for improvement.

Dead Cells and Returnal are the two that come instantly to mind where it doesn't matter how many times I die when just moving around feels so damn satisfying. Even old school Doom feels incredible coming back to play again. Oddball one here - Evil West is severely underrated for just how good it feels to play.

Love it or hate it, Call of Duty Warzone feels absolutely awesome to play. Responsive, great feedback when hitting enemies and does the whole FPS thing really well.

Evil West is a solid 6 or 7/10 and even though I skipped all the cut scenes, I kept going just because it felt really good to play. Good answer imo.

King of Fighters. The game feel for 90% of them is just so so good
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special is smoother and you have '94-'97 (excluding '96), '99, 2001, XII, and first EX: Neo Blood dragging down the average quite a lot.

Recently wukong has the best movement feel for me, there is something about the weight of the blows and the moveset that is really good (except the jump which is just decent).

Overall nothing can beat my man Sonic, going from 2 to 3 and knuckles.
First one is good too but there is no super sayan transformation, and again nothing can beat the feeling of literally flying throught the levels at blinding speed.

Some people got misguided by the review of that irish wannabe drinker moron that said the game feels like a cinematic sony game just because it has some small cutscenes and never gave a chance to the game.

I don't think the feel was THAT special but it was nice to play nevertheless.

The roll into attack in Dead Cells is just phenomenal.

The grenade launcher in Quake is something else.

From the sound of the grenade being ejected and bouncing around, to the explosion and the gibs sounds, it's perfect.

Ys VIII - Lacrimosa of Dana Probably the best overall game design, music, story and especially gameplay. It is my most replayed game.

More recently I just finished Dragon Quest VII - Reimagined and top notch experience. It streamlined the game in a good way. I can't stand games longer than 20 hours.

Arcade Racing:
It has to go to Blur. The game was just ahead of its time. It supported up to 20 player lobbies and races were fun and chaotic.

Character Action RPG:
Nothing beats Dragon's Dogma to me. I love Fromsoftware game, but it doesn't hit the same. I call it Emergent Gameplay: The Game.

Rhythm Games:
It has to be Guitar Hero 3. That game defined a whole generation. Everyone who played it know the famous "through the fire and flames" struggle.

Simulators in general:
It has to be Assetto Corsa Competizione with all the realistic mods

I need to stop. There are too many games in different genres tbh. That is why I don't agree with gaming is dying/bad nowadays. People that generally stick to one or two genres are the ones complaining the most. Gotta broaden those horizons.

I have tried 3 separate times to get thru Sekiro. My first run on its launch back in 2019 I had returned back to the Castle after the first Ape Fight….both my retry's I make it to the first at the Castle…every time I kick myself because the game is so flippin' good, but somehow I don't stick with it.

It is my greatest shame.
I tried several times to love Sekiro as well. I adore the Souls games. Platinum trophy on every single one.
The Souls games feel so amazing to play because you have so many options how to go about playing it. They are games that are built for the player to enjoy.

Sekiro was way too restrictive. I don't want to play the way its telling me to play. So I don't play it.

I can see by the other replies that my initial thought of Animal Crossing is NOT what most people have in mind. But when time passes in real time on my island...I can sink into that groove for hours.

Wanted to add a few more:

- Metaphor ReFantazio has very snappy animations and quick turn based combat, I kinda dig it.
- Robocop Rogue City and Robocop Unfinished Business: very satisfying gunplay, so good.
- Neon White's card based movement and gameplay is super unique and feels perfect

Sekiro ruined melee combat for me, so many other games feel just mushy and awful in comparison. I liked Yotei enough but the combat was so sloppy and rough in comparison.

Nioh's is pretty good though.
Sekiro's definitely up there for me, too. Even just moving around outside of combat also feels really good.
