Oh wow, the Diablos armour from Monster Hunter looks very similar to that - too similar to be a coincidence. His weapon looks just like the Undertaker Lance as well.Red Earth/Warzard sprites are pretty neat

CPS3 system FTW.
Oh well, back to the drawing board.Cameltoe?
Looked up the trailer, that game looks pretty sweet!Dragon's Crown for Vita/PS3.

There must be a bunch of nods to other Capcom games in the MH series...
Wow good catch, that lance is most definitely a callback to the sprite in question. Not completely sure about the armor, but looks pretty close.
And wow at that Card Sagas Wars. Looks amazing... too bad I'm terrible at traditional fighting games.
Something's not quite right with that updated sprite. It lost a lot of luster and contrast compared to the original. The teeth don't look good either. The top one just looks a lot more menacing.
Blazblue are likely my favorite as well. Great detail, style, and they feel totally hand drawn, which is not something I can say for others (like KoF).
The Player sprites are really impressive considering the avatar systemDungeon Fighter Online has some interesting sprite work:

I love me some sprites...always far and away more charming than 3d graphics.
Nope, polygons. Great style though.
I'm pretty sure the game is animated with flash or a flash based program.
Flash isn't the only program used to create vector graphics ya know.
Never say always.
People have been listing Vanillaware as a blanket vote for many of their games, but I guess it doesn't hurt to post more examples.3 pages without this? GAF, I am disappoint.

Hard to disagree. The sprite animations in Metal Slug are amazingly fluid, the collection of characters, items, enemies, vehicles and backgrounds is colossal, and the amounts of details they have is astonishing.Metal slug no contest.
Lots of good stuff mentioned already.
I've always been a fan of SotN's sprites, though I can't find many good gifs.

I will never understand the love for Castlevania sprites. Its as if most of them are ripped out of the 16 bit era or something.
Metal slug no contest.

Ghost Trick doesn't use polygons. They're hand animated sprites.
In the realm of RPGs, Breath of Fire III and IV take the top. Easily.

BOFIV did have some badass sprites, I was particularly a fan of Fou-Lu's:

That dude fought like a boss.
Since we're talking about animations so much, I've got to mention the original Prince of Persia. Blew my mind when I played if for the first time in like... 2003?
Have you ever played Dungeon Fighter Online?
GK: I haven't heard of that one. Is it recent?
Two or three years old. It's a Korean MMO similar to Capcom's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons from the arcade. It's very popular in Korea and it's getting launched in America now. It's a side-scrolling 2D MMO.
GK: Oh! You mean Arad Senki [the title in Japan]! Oh, yeah, I've played that. It's pretty safe to say that if we did a net game, it might look something like that.
It seems very natural for Vanillaware.
GK: Definitely. If I had a chance, I'd love to make something that surpassed that game.
Ha! Great pick! I forgot about all the super work in that game.Three Dirty Dwarves on the Saturn.

Sprites are such an under-appreciated art form. It's a shame there aren't any really detailed modern sprite-based platformers. I've always thought the fake 2D games like the new Mario and DK games look atrocious.
WHY IS THERE NO MENTION OF MOTW?!

The animation is almost as fluid as SF3, but nothing is rotoscoped.
That's why I love SNK.
Also Metal Slug 3:

I love every burning and exploding animation in every Metal Slug game. It's so detailed and fluidly animated and just overall awesome.
