What game has the best sprites?

3 pages without this? GAF, I am disappoint.

o.o what game is this

Oh wow, the Diablos armour from Monster Hunter looks very similar to that - too similar to be a coincidence. His weapon looks just like the Undertaker Lance as well.
There must be a bunch of nods to other Capcom games in the MH series...

Wow good catch, that lance is most definitely a callback to the sprite in question. Not completely sure about the armor, but looks pretty close.

And wow at that Card Sagas Wars. Looks amazing... too bad I'm terrible at traditional fighting games.

I could be mistaken, but some of these look more like 2D animation rather than sprites. Or are we just doing the best looking 2D art?

Some of the Diablos Armor in the other MH games looks pretty similar in design to it. The pic listed wasn't a good example.

^^^ Yeah, that pic wasn't the best example. But that Warzard sprite just looks like a Diablos in general! I'm intrigued...

I was always fond of Apollo Justice's sprites:

1-2ani-minuki-bounce.gif
1-3ani-skye-whoa.gif
1-3ani-kyouya-hair.gif

3-4ani-daian-stroke.gif
4-2ani-varan-twirl.gif

What drove me up the wall though was how they reused old assets so much. I mean what the fuck? Also this:

doesn't look right.

Something's not quite right with that updated sprite. It lost a lot of luster and contrast compared to the original. The teeth don't look good either. The top one just looks a lot more menacing.

A perfect example of "less is more" in videogame graphics. Your imagination is half of the arts impact.

Blazblue are likely my favorite as well. Great detail, style, and they feel totally hand drawn, which is not something I can say for others (like KoF).

Just by looking at the sprites, I can almost guarantee they have used every possible help they could. Including 3D models.

A steller thread.

No Castlevania SotN love? :(

Nope, polygons. Great style though.

Ghost Trick doesn't use polygons. They're hand animated sprites.

EDIT: But to contribute to the thread:

WHY IS THERE NO MENTION OF MOTW?!

The animation is almost as fluid as SF3, but nothing is rotoscoped.

That's why I love SNK.

Also Metal Slug 3:

I love every burning and exploding animation in every Metal Slug game. It's so detailed and fluidly animated and just overall awesome.

Since we're talking about animations so much, I've got to mention the original Prince of Persia. Blew my mind when I played if for the first time in like... 2003?

awesome thread! makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :D but where is the love for the 2d monkey island games, and better yet, Days of The Tentacle, if those count.

Lots of good stuff mentioned already.

I've always been a fan of SotN's sprites, though I can't find many good gifs.

This is what I came to mention. Pretty much all of the 2D Castlevania games from SotN and after have great spritework and animation.

I will never understand the love for Castlevania sprites. Its as if most of them are ripped out of the 16 bit era or something.

It's pretty much the smooth, smooth animation that wins me over. I always loved watching how the main characters moved.

Metal slug no contest.

Also, this. Definitely this.

I don't have a gif of this, but the animation of the waves amazed me.

EDIT: So, in that Vanillaware interview posted earlier

Have you ever played Dungeon Fighter Online?

GK: I haven't heard of that one. Is it recent?

Two or three years old. It's a Korean MMO similar to Capcom's Advanced Dungeons & Dragons from the arcade. It's very popular in Korea and it's getting launched in America now. It's a side-scrolling 2D MMO.

GK: Oh! You mean Arad Senki [the title in Japan]! Oh, yeah, I've played that. It's pretty safe to say that if we did a net game, it might look something like that.

It seems very natural for Vanillaware.

GK: Definitely. If I had a chance, I'd love to make something that surpassed that game.

Sounds like he was planning Dragon's Crown since then.

Sprites are such an under-appreciated art form. It's a shame there aren't any really detailed modern sprite-based platformers. I've always thought the fake 2D games like the new Mario and DK games look atrocious.

NSMB's mix of bland pseudo-2D prerenders and lackluster legit 2D made it look like a shareware game from 1999 that you'd download from Tucows or Happy Puppy. DKCR wasn't nearly as egregious since it was full 3D and they only used that weird frame buffer trick to make certain things behave like sprites.

Three Dirty Dwarves on the Saturn.

The SEGA Saturn really is an enigma. It was the last console where 2D had some sort of real push. Even the Nintendo DS rarely had 2D games pushed to the limit outside a specific few.

Kumatanchi was one of them:

By the way was this game any good?

Ghost Trick doesn't use polygons. They're hand animated sprites.

Yeah SNK is incredible. Its too bad that the upstarting the fighting genre went to Capcom. SNK was so close but no cigar. Its too bad they practically have became irrrelevant outside of King of Fighters, which is still niche everywhere. It also sucks that they were forced to work on two decade old hardware for years. But still they were amazing.

They're backgrounds for their game were pretty damn good as well.
