What game(s) had/has the best shotgun?

It's better with sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U43xE3j3JKE

Beat me to it

When a shotgun is good, it's real good. Games that know how to do a good shotgun are usually good games mirite?

That satisfying splat. That loud boom. Knocking your enemy across the room with a blast to the chest. This is a tough choice as for nostalgia sake I'm tempted to just hand this one right over to Doom 2 without even thinking. The super-shotgun is THE shotgun that first comes to mind when I think of video game shotguns. The only thing that gives me pause is that handing the top spot to Doom 2 just doesn't seem fair to all the other great shot guns. Ah well, screw it. One of the first, one of the best.

Honorable mentions: Resident Evil 2, Halo. Blasting a dude in the face with a shotgun in Halo and finishing him off with a melee attack is just magnificent. ADS can suck a fat one. Hip firing is where it's at and ain't no thang better than a shotgun.

I was about to say Doom before clicking that thread ;)

Give a try to Kingpin too, the sound was not bad at all. Take a look:

the pump shotty in counterstrike,

I love the rage-inducing effects it can have on other players.

Goes for the shotgun in quake3 as well

The original Quake shotgun was super satisfying when combined with Quad Damage - you could even use it to gib and kill zombies! #protip

I tried to make a shotgun in my own game with reasonable success...

Obviously better with sound... this is a good research thread ;D

Game Maker?

I always loved the sound of the shotgun in Goldeneye 64. Had a booming fleshy thud to it that made it fun to use. Of course visually there are many more satisfying weapons in newer games, but no shotgun I've used ever replicated that feeling quite the same for me.

Killing Floor has some magnificent shotguns. From the starting pump-action to the AA-12, each has a distinct feel and all are extremely fun to use.

Doom 2.

I have say though the new Tomb Raider, has one of the best sound effects, although really only used it for opening secret area had a nice blast and echo.

The original Crysis had a pretty great shotgun. It had an adjustable choke so you can switch between longer range or wider spread.

It's not the best, but Rage's shotgun deserves some mention for playing nice with their physics and animation system to send mutants spiraling headless over heels at point blank range.

Shotgun from FEAR should be in 1st place.

Followed by SPAS-12 from Modern Warfare 2, shotgun from Resident Evil REMake and RE 4.

People actually like the Half-Life 2 shotgun? Man. You learn something new every day.

I really like the look and animations of the Quake 2 single-barrel shotgun, but it's not terribly useful in the later stages of the game.

The thing I really like about HL2's shotgun is that it's perfectly usable both in short and mid range unlike many shotguns in other shooters.

Honorable mentions go to Bulletstorm and Killing Floor.

I don't really play shooters, so I'm not speaking from a lot of experience, but Gears has one hell of a satisfying shotgun
(Gnasher and not sawed-off, obviously)
