Beat me to it
When a shotgun is good, it's real good. Games that know how to do a good shotgun are usually good games mirite?
That satisfying splat. That loud boom. Knocking your enemy across the room with a blast to the chest. This is a tough choice as for nostalgia sake I'm tempted to just hand this one right over to Doom 2 without even thinking. The super-shotgun is THE shotgun that first comes to mind when I think of video game shotguns. The only thing that gives me pause is that handing the top spot to Doom 2 just doesn't seem fair to all the other great shot guns. Ah well, screw it. One of the first, one of the best.

Honorable mentions: Resident Evil 2, Halo. Blasting a dude in the face with a shotgun in Halo and finishing him off with a melee attack is just magnificent. ADS can suck a fat one. Hip firing is where it's at and ain't no thang better than a shotgun.
I miss this game.KZ2

it even has a light.
The original Quake shotgun was super satisfying when combined with Quad Damage - you could even use it to gib and kill zombies! #protip
I tried to make a shotgun in my own game with reasonable success...

People actually like the Half-Life 2 shotgun? Man. You learn something new every day.
I really like the look and animations of the Quake 2 single-barrel shotgun, but it's not terribly useful in the later stages of the game.
How did that guy die in that gif?
Not sure if sarcasm.
