What game was an actual "system seller" for you?

Goldeneye for the N64
Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PS3

Those are the only two times I remember seeing a game and thinking "I have to buy this console right now."

I hadn't owned a console since the SNES, but got into some light gaming at a friend's place and started to follow games a bit more. Then in late 2007 the following games came out which looked awesome: Mass Effect, Bioshock, COD4, and Halo 3. Oh and Oblivion was released a bit prior too. COD4 was probably the most important of the bunch as that's what my friends would be playing, and wow did I play the fuck out of that game. So I bought an Xbox 360, and jumped back into gaming after being out maybe 10 to 15 years.

I've always been a mainly SONY gamer, however I did buy a 360 basically solely for Star Ocean 4. I loved the first 3. SO4 didn't capture the same magic that the first 3 did for me.
Ended up really liking Infinite Undiscovery though, so it worked out.

N64 - Mario 64
PSX - Syphon Filter, Metal Gear Solid
GameCube - Resident Evil 4
Xbox - Halo
PS2 - Metal Gear Solid 2
PC - Unreal Tournament 2004, DOOM 3
PS3 - Metal Gear Solid 4
Xbox 360 - Oblivion
WiiU - Mario Maker

Mario -nes
Super Mario -snes
Mario 64 -n64
Resident evil 1 -ps1
Botw- switch
Bloodborne - ps4. I ended up only buying a ps4 for Bloodborne, beat the game and immediately sold it. Actually broke even on the whole thing because it was that spiderman bundle during a holiday.
Game Pass. - xsx

Halo and Jet Set Radio Future on the original Xbox. Both ended up way better than even my wildest expectations.

And of course BotW for the Switch, although I would have bought one anyway since I need a handheld for my daily commute.

I've pretty much owned everything in the last 20 years to date on launch just cos' - except for Gamecube. I remember having a PS2 & Xbox but when Pokemon Coliseum came out I went and grabbed one pretty quickly.

Tekken Tag Tournament for PS2. Mostly due to how good Tekken 3 was on PS1, and just how good TTT looked on PS2. Year 2000 and PS2 was hype AF back then.

i usually buy them for their overall library but there are a few system seller, like zelda. i buy nintendo systems mainly to play them.

i bought a PS3 just for uncharted 2. that game was insane back then and was like the beginning of sonys's first party success. i didnt regret it one bit. that game was worth buying a PS3 for. i went for 360 initially but sony pulled me back by the end of that gen and the rest is history.

i bought an xbox one x just to play ori and cuphead. they were exclusive at the time and were the only interesting games on xbox that i couldnt play on PS4.

The OG Xbox and 360 really had bangers that sold me on it.
Conker remake, Halo, Fable etc

Still sucks MS started releasing everything for PC.

Too many to list here, but some of them are:

Megaman X
Final Fantasy X
Super Mario 64
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Kingdom Hearts(All of them, actually)
Super Mario Odyssey
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
God of War 4
Zero Escape 1 and 2.

And so many more.

The last system seller for me was BotW for Switch.

The one before that was FFX for PS2, and the one before that was Mario 64 for N64.

3DS and PS4 were impulse buys, and XSX was a "i have a shitty laptop and PCs are stupidly expensive rn" buy.

I've pretty much bought every mainline console on day one, apart from Nintendo. I never had an NES or SNES. But the day I saw Ocarina of time In a magazine I went and bout an N64 that day. Didn't regret it one bit. Awesome game. I bought the GameCube, wii, wi u and switch day one but sold them all within 6 months. Nintendo games just don't do it for me but Ocarina did for sure.

Thinking about it even though GameCube was powerful for the time it had limited disc space, and the following consoles were so under powered. I miss cutting edge Nintendo😥.

Bloodborne for the PS4. But only because I was sure that the PS4 and Xbox One would have ylod like their predecessor and dreaded to wait years before the arival of true next gen games. The plan was to wait the slim version of the PS4 and play on PC in the meantime. Then in 2014 I saw a bundle with a free Bloodborne included ...

Knights of the old republic xbox. Silent hill ps1 . god of war ps2 . mass effect 1 xbox 360. uncharted 1 ps3 infamous second son ps4 Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart ps5.

Mario Duckhunt (present)
OoT (present)
Halo CE / DoA2
Halo 3 and PGR3
BotW
Halo Infinite and Elden Ring SS
MGS2
Luigi's Mansion FZero

Demons Souls RE4R (in the future of 2375)

Skate+1+xbox.jpg

I stopped having a console at home after the ps2 gen.
I wasn't playing videogames at all for a few years, then one day i was at a friend's place who had an X360 and Skate demo where you could play half an hour doing whatever in the school spot.
I remember being in awe of the different ground textures (first time i played on a hd tv also) and the overall realistic vibe of the game and fell in love with it.
I played half an hour after half an hour, till morning and when the shop opened i went and buy the console and the game. So yeah real system seller and the only time i did that.

Mario 64 convinced me on its own to buy an N64
FF7 convinced me on its own to buy a PS1
Ridge Racers convinced me on its own to buy a PSP
Halo convinced me on its own to buy an XBOX
PGR3 convinced me on its own to buy a 360
Astro Bot Rescue Mission convinced me on its own to buy a PSVR

Lylat Wars: N64
Command & Command RED ALERT RETALIATION: PSX
Halo 2: Xbox
Ar Tonelico: PS2
Phantasy Star Online: Dreamcast
Valkyria Chronicles: PS3
Assassin's Creed: Xbox 360
Mario Galaxy: Wii
Sunset Overdrive : Xbox One
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Wii U
Infamous Second Son: PS4
Mario Odessy: Switch
Demon Souls: PS5
Forza Horizon 5: Xbox Series X

Other earlier consoles dating back to the Master System and NES era where bought for me by my Parents, so not "system sellers" and while I own every handheld since the GB including PSP and Vita I can't honestly remember why I bought them, I think the Vita might have been the uncharted remake but I also think Gravity Rush and the 3DS for the Street Fight IV release on it... but I feel like there could have been other reasons too.

PC I just drop 4-5k on a new rig every 5 years or so to keep up with the latest graphics on the system, since I use it heavily its not really ever got me to upgrade based on a single game.

Historically Nintendo first party has always been system sellers for me. SMW, F-Zero, Mario 64, Wave Race, Luigi's Mansion, Wii Sports, Twilight Princess and BotW to name a few.

For PlayStation and Xbox I generally just buy them because that's where the good third party stuff is. I bought a PSX for Air Combat, MK3 and Darkstalkers. Bought a 360 for Dead Rising. Etc.

PSX - Final Fantasy VII (I decided on PSX over Saturn when the first news of this game broke)

Dreamcast - Soul Calibur

GBA - FF Tactics Advance

Xbox - Star Wars KoToR

I think those were the only consoles where one specific must-have game made the choice for me.

Gameboy Colour - Pokemon Red
Nintendo 64 - Super Mario 64
Nintendo Gamecube - Super Smash Bros. Melee
Nintendo Wii - Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Nintendo DS - Super Mario 64 DS
Nintendo Switch: Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
Xbox 360 - Halo 3

Games came afterwards for it.
I didn't have a need for the 3DS, Wii U, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, just wanted better performance for my old games.

Wii U - Pikmin 3 And Wind Waker and probably the only true answer for me

The rest I would probably buy anyway

Snes - Super Mario Bros
N64 - Mario 64

PS2 - MGS2. FFX. DMC ( Was gonna buy anyway lol )
Xbox OG - Star Wars KOTOR
Xbox 360 - Halo 3

Switch - Fire Emblem 3 houses ( I was gonna buy it anyway because of a few titles )

Most the other consoles I bought because I was a fan of the Platform, Megadrive, Saturn, Dreamcast. Gamecube. PS3, PS4, PS5 etc
