Dragon Quest probably has my favorite monster design. Tons of personality that translates well to both low-resolution NES images and high-res, textured beasts.

I think the Mario series gets overlooked in this aspect, possibly for being cartoony. But they nailed the look of so many baddies right out of the gate in '85.
