Thread title says it all really. There's a long-held belief in gaming that exclusives sell consoles, and I would say that's mostly accurate. We've all bought a new box just to play a certain game that really piqued our interest. In generations past, maybe it was having a go at a certain game at a friend's house that convinced us; now it could be a Twitch stream or a Youtube Let's Play that convinces us to take the plunge.
For me, the first one to do this was Goldeneye on the N64. Here was a split-screen multiplayer FPS I could play with my friends at sleepovers, parties, after school, etc. It was a huge part of the zeitgeist during school, with people talking about their best times on Secret Agent in the Facility and what multiplayer modes they were currently playing.
The next time this happened was the original XBox, and it wasn't so much a game as it was XBox Live. It was around the time when myself and most of my friends were getting wireless routers in their homes and really expanding home networks to multiple devices. Being able to play PGR2 or Mech Assault in our own houses but talk to each other as we played was incredible back in 2003.
The last one that did it for me was Destiny, actually. This just made buy a console again, in general, after having switched entirely to PC in 2011. I'm really glad I did, though, as Destiny has been one of my favorite games of the generation.
