What Happend to the great Arcade Racing games?

More people need to play Trackmania Turbo!

That game has an incredible sense of speed (better than Burnout in my opinion) and the handling is pure arcade (easy to pick up but heard to master).

It's a great game and one of the best arcade racers ever in my opinion.

Yes I would definitely second this, the speed of it is incredible at 60fps and the online lobbies are still full. Some great stunt racing tracks too.

RR 7 was the last great arcade racing for me. It was so good and 1080p! It still holds up today. Sad there hasn't been a port.

Horizon Chase Turbo is the shit. Plays like a faster version of the old Top Gear games.

This is one that I was really looking forward to for years. Sounded really promising. I heard they abandoned the project at some point. If anyone has info on this, do share.

There might be some games like this but as a generation i think people just got bored. These were the first game people ever played. Ran its course i guess.

It sucks doesn't it, I miss them too. People stopped buying them in favour of more realistic stuff like Gran Turismo. I would absolutely love a sega model 2/3/Outrun compilation on a modern console/pc. M2 could handle the porting and do it justice.

The problem is that GT and Forza smoke arcade games these days.
I'm not sure about Forza but on GTS the sense of speed is ridiculous in the faster cars like prototypes and Group C/LeMan spec cars.
Also the multiplayer in GT like shuffle racing is better than most arcade games.

Simulation, realism and open world happened and unfortunately it took over which seemingly put arcade racers on the back burner into niche territory. I do miss the days when racing games were about pure, unadulterated fun with imaginative tracks and cars. Now it's about real tracks, cars and handling which to me gets predictable and can even become boring.

We need:

- burnout 3 remastered
- nfsu2 remastered
- a F2P Battle Royale car combat game
- an amazing kart game with crossplay among all platforms.

That plus the indie efforts will bring arcade racing back into the limelight.

it's more or less the arcade genre that is dead for now. I mean, not "literally" dead, there's still arcade game on the market, but issssh. Why don't we have a new SSX, the last one was in 2012...

It is like the plateformer genre, we can only hope that in the future, the genre will come back from the dead :(

Still holding out hope for a NFS underground collection and burnout 3-4 collection remasters. Best arcade racers imo, joined by Forza horizon 3-4.

I'm looking forward to Hotshot Racing

Yeah I'm thoroughly looking forward to this one - the pedigree is great too as there's some help from the Sonic Racing Transformed makers and that game was fucking amazing, the only kart game to get anywhere near Mario Kart's level of awesomeness.

The best game possible in the genre already released, OP, so there's nowhere left for it to go:

Not even Sega could follow it up.

I want a colourful car based arcade racing game that runs at above 60fps on PC. Burnout Paradise was good back on PS3, and NFS Underground 2 was fun on PS2. But those are the last games I truly enjoyed. Cart racers haven't been above average since Diddy Kong and Crash Team, and sims just don't do it for me. Gran Turismo 3 was all about unlocking the fun cars and F1 cars for me, and I don't have an Xbox so I've never played Forza Horizon.

The genre was perfect for showing off next gen graphics, I really miss the days when that was viable. Just imagine new consoles launching with that type of games again...

I find simulatin racing games boring as shit. Games like Burnout (before criterion sold their souls), Asphalt 9,midnight club, Dangerous driving, NFS Underground/most wanted games, etc. There is nothing to fill that void on the xbox or ps4 outside outside of the Horizon series.

Simply, we did not buy them.

We passed over games like the latest Out Run, Split/Second and several others.

Publishers decided they were not worth of their attention and moved on.

People prefer realism of late and Need For Speed Effed up by bringing on a deluge of 30fps uninspired games.

Having said that I think we need a resurgence of arcade racing games, like PGR, San Francisco Rush, Wipeout and the GOAT Ridge Racer.....I hope RR makes a comeback this gen. It would look insane with this technology and a blazing 60-120fps...

Then I never call Driveclub a full arcade game, but it was the best thing to happen to driving games this gen outside of GTS......Even if Sony does not make a DC2.... I would love to see a Driveclub Remake/Remaster at 4k 60fps.....I would be content with that at least...SO RR and DC bring it on....

You should really try DriveClub out ;).

I think nobody bought them and that's it.
Cant forget the great hit On Rush, great game, nobody played it....just like most motorstorms...

Guaranteed if a Publisher makes a great Arcade racer, they will sell. Burnout Paradise was the last great one and it has sold really well. The Need For Speed series is pure shit and there is no other publisher outside of the crew (eh game) that is stepping up to the plate. Project Cars 3 was hopeful but again, it's a shit game.

I loved Midnight Club 2 and Burnout 3!!!

I have no complaints with xbox on this subject. Everything I want from 3 generations, I have.

two things only I miss on xbone: OutRun 2 and Blur, and I can't fault microsoft for either.

Fuckin Blur man, the concept in the pit of youtube still makes me cry, such a great fucking game. I think that for the most part Forza Horizon destroyed this genre, there is no competiton againts that, however developers should understand that there is a simcade and arcade and arcade is just collecting dust.

Yeah I don't understand why more people has not play it, especially when it was on GamePass.

Modern gaming happened. Instant, constant gratification and zero challenge. You expect me to find fun in running this time trial 40 times just to get gold? You expect me to learn the track and unique driving system? What's wrong with GT/Forza bland?

They could just remake Burnout 3 or Revenge, Midnight Club 2, Gran Turismo 2 and Ridge Racer Type 4 and call it a day. I would be in heaven.
Do Tekken 5 and Ace Combat 3 while you're at it Namco.

Gravel is a lesser known current gen arcade racer that I recommend. Got the platinum for it, or at least unlocked everything if memory fails me.

Hotshot racing looks interesting, comes out on September 10th for most platforms. I pre-ordered it on Switch.

I miss old school arcade game soo fucking much! I adored the Burnout Series and the NFS Series. Hell, i still play MW(2005) and UG2 on my PC from time to time! I also have the other nfs games on consoles. I wish that we could've gotten a Project Gotham Racing 5...welp...I just hope that we have more racing game remasters in the future.

art of rally is releasing in about 4 hours. It's from the same guys that developed Absolute Drift. I've seen few reviews on YouTube and people seem to like it.

Check it out:

(game is also available on GoG and Epic)
