What happened to "arcadey" games?

They were state of the art back in these days... Well, maybe the vector games could be considered more advanced, but the point is, they had as much budget as games could have in their time.

There were quite a few more impressive games, so i wouldn't call them state of the art. But they were good.

Wild Tangent: This thread really had me yearning to play Downhill Domination. I texted a buddy who runs a mom & pop game store to see if he had a copy which he did. It was loose, no case. I picked it up this morning for a whopping $7 dollars. I broke out my Framemeister for the first time ever and cracked open the PS2 I purchased at Target from the clearance endcap from years back. I also bought a set of PS2 component cables when I bought the Framemeister and when I boot the console the color is pink'ish. Rebooting my TV fixed that issue. Now I can't get past the PS2 setup as no button inputs are detected except for hitting the analog button or unplugging/plugging in the controller switches the language. Turns out the controller is bad I run back over to my buddy's store, grab a another controller and head back home. Success! I boot the game but have no sound. Turns out you have to set your HDMI ports on your TV to standard instead of enhanced. Boot the game again and am greeted by a "not enough space on your memory card" error. Reboot the console and go to manage the saves on the card. Realize this is my old memory card and reminisce as I delete every save one by one. Boot the game back up, select my character and start a new career and then...the game doesn't load and the disc drive is making a strange noise. I turn the console off and check the disk out, it has a few deeper scratches so I clean it with water and a micro fiber cloth. Rinse and repeat that last step with the same results. FML

End result is that I'm now playing Silent Hill 2 for the first time. :p

Everyone is too busy setting the "visual" bar and the "story telling" bar. They forget what makes a game..... a game.

Wreckfest came out on consoles last year. Nobody cared.
It was my personal goty.

Have to second this, it's brilliant. Also people may wish to check out Chase Horizon Turbo.

Doesn't look like much but I've been having a blast with it. Proper old school Outrun/Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge stuff. Now if someone wants to make a successor to Supercars 2...

Arcadey pick up and play games can't retain users long enough to sell additional content or entice other users to try it out. Such games will never have a substantiated presence on concurrent users lists either.
Games like COD, GS:GO, Destiny, Warframe or World of Warcraft, the ones with a repetitive gameplay loops become better dopamine dispensers than arcade games could ever be.

the proper answer.

those are the games i absolutley like the least.

Stilk has, but not really like the good old days

Platinum games knows the vibe
We have Forza Horizon
Doom Eternal (I hope)

I post this everytime a thread like this appears:

It had two issues: performance problems (specifically on Switch but which they eventually patched), and the tutorial didnt explain drift properly (you just hold accelerate and tap handbrake twice).

It's such a wonderful game but it was allowed to die.

The Dreamcast died in 2001, blame all the players that didn't support it.

ps2, gc and xbox all had great arcadey games.

Dreamcast was great thought. I think they height of this genre was ps1 and saturn . Ridge racer and sega rally was the games to have.

they died because console manufacturers want less games but bigger titles. arcadey isn't as easy to sell as a big ULTRA HD CINEMATIC REALISTIC EXPERIENCE.

there are a lot of arcadey games, they are just extremely small budget ones from indie or small devs

Oh it's good? I'll give it a go then. I love arcade racing.

currently addicted to playing Grip Combat Racing. It's a Rollcage spiritual successor.

Yeah, it's great!

I'm also a fan of Grip (I have it on xbox and switch) but the racing genre (handling etc.) is slightly different with Xenon. It's a bit like Ridge Racer.

Both of these games have great soundtracks too. 🎧

Not a huge genre and obviously not everyone's cup of tea but rhythm games have remained quite arcadey. Most songs in DJMax for example are only 90-120 seconds and even most Project Diva songs come in at under 3 minutes. It's a far cry from the GH/Rockband days of having to get through 10 minutes of Guitar Solos on a single track.

The spiritual successor to Destruction Derby in all but name, seeing as we won't get another installment in that series anytime soon....is it better to play wreckfest on Xbox-One? As One review I saw said the PS4 had to be restarted numerous times ahead of a race....

I've been PS4 only with it, and haven't experienced the described problem (not to say it doesn't exist though-just my anecdotal evidence).
Can't comment on the X1 version sorry.
