What happened to Gun 2?

Never really announced, only hinted at, and considering the original came out in '05, it's about time for a sequel to be hitting. Yet there's nothing concrete out there at all pointing to the likelihood of a sequel. Here's the latest tidbit of news I could find from back in September, which doesn't help to clear the mystery one bit:

Anyone out there with insider info want to give us a little wink and a nod as far as a sequel being in production or not? I think Gun almost universally left people with the opinion of, "This is alright, but man, imagine what they could do with a sequel! The framework is all here, they just need to drastically expand on it." This needs to happen!! I want Gun 2!

I think they realized that hardcore gamers didn't really care about it aside from it being a 360 launch title and the developers gave up the ghost.

It will probably be revived when THPS is retired, which lets face it has a couple of installments left at best. Neversoft only has two teams and I only see one growing to pump out Guitar games.

Don't you have to be like, you know...successful in your first game, to warrant a sequel usually?

I'm not a sales-age freak, so while I can list a bunch of games that sucked ass and still got a sequel (True Crime, the eventually cancelled sequel to EA's Marvel fighter, etc.), I can't tell you whether or not they sold well and that's the reason a sequel was made.

edit: Also success is relative. Disgaea and other Nippon Ichi and Atlus games may not be successful in comparison to an EA release, but apparently they are still successful enough to warrant sequels and U.S. releases.

Didn't the first game bomb? If a game bombs, there is little reason for a publisher to make a sequel.

It didn't bomb, but it didn't do fantastic either. Last I heard(quite a wile ago) was it was shelved, it had started to be worked on, but I don't think the cost of creating a sequel was good enough with okay-ish sales on the first Gun.

Gun bombed, but while the game was weak there's definitely room for a sequel but it's not happening. I remember I was over at Neversoft a few months before Project 8 launched and I was not supposed to see a Gun 2 folder in their demo room's computer. Considering how tough the game's development was according Joel Jewett (making open world games is fucking ahrd, I believe he said), I dont think they are jumping for a sequel.

Mega Man 1 was a bomb too...

I don't think it's all that likely Neversoft are putting out 4 Guitar Hero games. Aerosmith is out in June. 4 will be out in October. That gives them a 3 month gap to put something else out, and while I wouldn't complain I don't think it's a particularly good idea to put another game out so close to 4. There may be a Guitar Hero game for DS or something, but Neversoft won't be doing it. If they put out more than just GH:4, GH:A and Tony Hawks: Blah I'd be surprised.

I didn't mind Gun too bad. The Xbox 360 port wasn't anything fancy. In fact, did they even make any changes to it? But it had a pretty decent storyline and there needs to be more Wild West games released.

I thought Gun was a title that Neversoft could have picked up and ran with, but despite it being a new IP, it seems the public are more favored into buying the Tony Hawk/Guitar Hero games, so this is what happened. Neversoft are making more Tony Hawk/Guitar Hero games.

Gun was awesome (except the final boss fight), I wish they had developed a true next-gen sequel. Wild west GTA is still a very intriguing concept and I think it would sell very well if done right.

I'm still saddened about this. If any game deserverd a sequel, it'd be this. I would've loved to see the world expanded because the characters and setting were awesome.

The main issue with Gun, was that it was way too small. It needed bigger landspace, more missions and basically, more everything. All of which would've been addressed in the sequel. :/

I loved this game.. not sure why it gets so much undeserved hate. This and Call of Juarez are my favorite western games.. not that there's a lot out there, I guess. But I didn't care for RDR.

you're probably right. Activision loves to get franchises onto every platform possible, including handhelds and Neversoft won't be the ones to do it (other companies, usually VV and Shaba, handle the Tony Hawk ports, Neversoft only handles the lead SKU/SKUs).

They launched the GBA/DS game Tony Hawk's Skateland alongside Tony Hawk's American Wasteland and the also released a "remix" version of Tony Hawk's Underground 2 for PSP. None of these were developed by Neversoft.

We'll probably see another company handle the other GH games and they may end up on the DS or something.

And we should be expecting them to announce the next Tony Hawk game in May...
So, ya, I don't think we'll see every guitar hero game come from them...
and there definitely shouldn't be room for a Gun 2; this will be their first year making more than two games, iirc.

What's funny is the games VV's made have been a million times better than the actual Neversoft developed Tony Hawk games as of late.

I would have to agree. I only got to the seventh chpater, and despite the achievemnst being totally easy to get, i just didnt want to play it. Hopefully Gamefly will ship me a game higher up on my list.

The first DS Tony Hawks game is the best game in the franchise since TH:PS4. No lie.

edit: Underground 2 is the best game in the franchise, by far.

I'd rather have Red Dead Revolver 2.

This.

I can see why some people think Neversoft's games are cool, but I don't. I think it's their sense of humor, or the way they design, render and animate their models. As much as I hate kicking someone when they are down, I do have to add that I don't approve of their dialog choices or the voice actors that say them. And the gameplay.. well. Maybe it's easier to list things that I like about Neversoft.

Their logo.

I found it enjoyable, but I loved just how back to basics the DS game was. Underground I thought was pretty cool. Underground 2...it just seemed to be the beginning of when the series stopped being as interesting to me.

fair enough.

Underground 2 and American Wasteland were a bit derivative of Underground (and those are the *only* TH games that are that way).

However, everything in THUG2 was just fun. The game was so over-the-top.
The level design featured majorly huge spine transfers and big drops. Lines were everywhere.
And speed manuals ensured that you were moving quickly all the time.
You didn't have to think about it as much, it was just fun.
And the graphical style was much more cartoony than the other iterations in the series.

I think alot of people would argue that THUG2 required less skill to master and was therefore not as good as other iterations in the series.
I would agree with the former part of this statement, but not the latter. It was just a blast to play.

About Tony Hawk
Tony Hawk is an American professional skateboarder, considered the most influential skater in modern vertical skateboarding. He is credited with the invention of many aerial skateboard tricks including the Stalefish, Madonna, and McHawk, and over 80 others, but is most famous for being the first recorded skater to land the 900 (two and a half rotations—900°—in the air before landing back on the pipe) during the televised June 27, 1999 X Games, for which he received an enormous amount of attention. He was also the second skateboarder to land a McTwist, a trick named after a Mike McGill of the Bones Brigade, a skate team that Tony Hawk was originally a member of. It marked the next level of his rise to fame, solidifying his status as a household name. He retired from competitive skateboarding afterwards, but continues to skate and perform.
