What happened to Jackie Chan?

The only thing that bothered me is that he wouldn't play a villain. Always had to be the hero.
Once he made it, yeah. Here's a comment I long ago wrote about Young Tiger: "JC plays a role he'd normally beat up, a gangster with a mole the size of a leech."

Hollywood doesn't know what to do with HK Superstars.

We'll trust that fucktard Vin Diesel with leading roles; but we still need a proxy honky in Jackie Chan movies. >:|

Fuck Hollywood.

he apparently bitchslaps his son for being too American and less Chinese, lol. I hear that in a interview he did

according to Wiki his son is trying to be a Chinese star and even gave up his American citizenship in favor of a Chinese one. or something like that

Yeah, I loved me some Jackie, but those comments changed the way I see him.

Doesn't make me like his movies any less though.

The Police Story(I think those were the super cop movies, I watched his movies in Chinese) movies were awesome, and New Police Story was the last movie I really enjoyed with him in it.

My parents watched Shinjuku Incident and said it was pretty weird for a Jackie movie.

I need to find my Jackie Chan CD still, he's not a bad singer.

I feel bad for the poor guy. Notwithstanding all the crazy ass stunts he did or the injuries he took, but at the end of the day, he just seems so drawn out and tired.

His movies:
Awesome. Some of his western stuff wasn't as bad as some of you guys are making it out to be. You guys realize that there's not a lot of quality stuff written for the average Asian actor, right? I know he can't act (New Police Story, The Myth), but you have to write with the actor in mind and play to his strengths (Drunken Master, Supercop). His collaboration with Jet Li came WAAAAAAY to late and the fact it had to have some fucking random white dude in it to be marketable to Western audiences was a joke. His recent movies aren't any different from a lot of other older actors' recent movies: he can't do what he used to anymore.

His personal life:
I don't know why anyone would shit on someone due to his personal beliefs. When I'm watching a Jackie Chan movie, I'm there "for the movie". It's not like they're flashing messages of his cheating/drinking/gambling/shilling out on the movie screen. The guy's human and makes mistakes, and I'm sure any one of you would've made the same with the amount of money and success this guy had (hell, I would've boned a Korean girl too). Must all public figures and actors be politically correct and be a role model? He's tried to keep things quiet, but well...there are paparazzi everywhere.

His politics:
The guy has barely had any sort of education whatsoever. His biggest audiences are in China (though it was really HK/Asia/the West that made him) right now, and he's trying to keep things good with them. While I don't agree with his views, which are not surprisingly conservative given his age and the life he's led, I think what he meant to say is that freedom has to be tempered with control: Not like wild kids running around doing whatever they want without any supervision, but kids with a guiding hand (though he meant the CCP, I'll take it to mean a responsible government).

His accent:
Since you assholes have already shit on his accent, why don't YOU motherfuckers try making a movie speaking Cantonese or Mandarin at the age he started doing Western films? Not easy, right? Then lay off the guy.

His looks:
:lol (see personal life) This guy had enough women in his life is all I'll say.

His commercials:
See George Foreman. See Western actors in Japan. See any late night infomercial.

His acting:
See Billy Ray Cyrus. See any of the movies by the Scary Movie guys. Do you expect him to be Phillip Seymour fucking Hoffman? The guy's claim to fame are his action flicks. He's in the same category as Stallone and the Governator. They don't hire them for their acting chops.

Edit: Bitchslapping his son for being too American:
:P I imagine this is the same facing all Asian parents who had to raise their kids in North America. This guy was not born in the US you know. It's not like he's a traitor or something for believing his kid should be more Chinese. As well, I also think his son would benefit more from being in Asia. For some reason, I just get the feeling a whole ton of girls would throw themselves at him for merely being Jackie's son.

At the end of the day, I think some are disappointed because they expect more from him (Oh my God! He did that stunt himself?! Insane! Wait...he's selling...anti-virus software?), which is why they're unhappy with him shilling himself out. However, I believe he's just living in a world of a bygone era. He's being left behind with the times and is still trying to hang on and be relevant.

there was only 1 person that had problems with most of your points =P there are no assholes here, just 1

it seems to me his father kicked his ass for good :lol

one thing i read that i thought was funny was that his son said to him "no matter how good i get at martial arts, ill never be as good as you. no matter how bad i am at singing, ill always be better than you" or something like that. i found this funny because i believe Jackie has like a ton of albums out while his son has basically flopped.

Holy crap. That plus the hot coals... And for #1, why the hell would you have real electricity going through those wires? I always thought the sparks were just special effects.

Yeah, that's one thing I don't get about Jackie Chan and similar HK action stars. I completely get why they don't have stunt doubles and do their own stuntwork, but sometimes it seems like they do things "for real" just for the sake of it being real - even when it won't benefit the movie.

There is no reason those wires needed to actually be electrified.

Stuff like not falling on a mattress makes sense, because that shows up on film. But some stuff, it's just like... why.

what the fuck...The wayans brothers (all 400 of em) are ballin' when they want to be.

Anyways, Jackie has always wanted an american audience. Since like forever. He's gotten it with Shanghai Noon/Knights and Rush Hour. Dunno why he's willing to go down hill again. Other than some desire to make a kids movie...which if you take Rob B Hood...it might be a new interest of his.

I cried a bit on the inside. I'll remember Jackie by his awesome flicks and ignore the upcoming shitfest I guess.

He has been China friendly for a while, also during the olympics. As an asian, I'm disappointed. I don't care about his personal life, but his politics annoys me.

Man, thinking of all the Jackie Chan movies I used to watch when I was younger is nostalgic. Too bad most of them are VHS or I would be watching them right now. :(

When someone mentions this movie the first thing I picture is the wheelchair kid playing a Game Gear without a cartridge in the damn system.
Lance, the wood chipper and the trash bag tend to win in my mind.

:lol

wiki has interviews where he says he doesnt like doing American movies because he doesnt the humor, like Rush Hour. He only does it to get money for his more passionate projects back in China

Shinjuku Incident was very good besides a rushed ending (HK cinema syndrome)

And despite Forbidden Kingdom having a really random white kid in it, it was nice

Also, New Police Story

  1. he can't act worth a shit (at least on the standards of western audiences)
  2. his accent is horrendous
  3. he's not exactly 'easy on the eyes'
  4. he (or his handlers) picks out some shit material
  5. just because he's popular in HK/China doesn't necessarily mean that mainstream western audiences will lap his shit up
  6. his characters are all similar and rely on the same schtick over and over
  7. he jumped the shark years ago

he said he's doing these type of movies for the money. the money he's getting for these films are enough to produce several hong kong movies.

but i hope he's not doing more shinjuku like movies.... that one was pretty dumb. i rather have more movies like rob-b-hood.

Eh. I'm surprised he's still able to move at all. I doubt there's a bone in his body he hasn't broken by now.

Oh yes... that was "City Hunter", was it not? Such an insane movie.

Sly used a body double on Rambo, your argument is invalid.
Dude got old, give him a break, atleast he's bowed out somewhat gracefully.

Damn I totally forgot about that amazing fight with the guy in the red shirt. Holy shit, some of the best choreography I'd seen in a Chan flick.
