What happened to Long John Silvers?

As far as I know (it's been a while) they're still around in Indiana, so I guess they're down to the Midwest. That makes sense given how readily available seafood is anywhere near the coasts. I remember their hush puppies and fries are good, but then it's hard to fuck up fries and hush puppies.

Our Long John Silvers shut down almost 15 years ago now. Instead of selling fish people sell drugs and have sex in there and someone got killed in the vacant hotel next to it.

Place is fucking creepy.

I used to go with my family on the regular when I was a kid. I thought it was pretty good.

Fast forward to around 5 years ago I passed by one and said sure why not. It was awful. I don't think my memories were rose colored, I think their food got a lot worse. Haven't been back since.

There's another chain in the US called Captain D's that's got a similar menu. Never been.

Cpt Ds is awful. I went there about 18 yrs ago. Grandfathers girlfriend gave me a $5 Cpt D gift certificate for Christmas.

People started to care about eating healthier - it's fried and incredibly greasy

In 1991, the KFC name was officially adopted, although it was already widely known by that initialism.[29] Kyle Craig, president of KFC US, admitted the change was an attempt to distance the chain from the unhealthy connotations of "fried"

Fried Chickens survived but it's way more popular than fried fish.

The local one here got shut down and replaced with a Dunkin' Donuts. I think the next town over still has one, but it's one of those weird combo restaurants attached to an A&W.

If you're going to get shitty food that kills you, the purpose is clearly only to fill your belly. That's cheaper to do at other shitholes. Maybe they've become cheaper in recent years. I've stayed away.

I agree that it's not great food(I just picked some up after reading the thread). It's been a while since I've had it and I'm sure I'll regret it. It's also too much food.

Update: currently eating LJS.

You inspired me.

They had a $5 lunch combo. I'm half way into I'm already scared that I may have to heart attack. I don't think I could do this very often.

One near me shut down almost seven years ago and I swear I still smell the hush puppies coming from the building, the building has remained vacant since it shut down though a Krispy Kreme was suppose to take its place

There used to be two in Hawaii. The first one closed down about a decade ago when the shopping center it was in (Moanalua) underwent a major remodeling. The second one, in Mililani, was a newer (early 2000s) LJS/A&W combo, closed down sometime last year; replaced with a Popeye's.

I guess the writing was on the wall for LJS when Yum decided to divest them back in 2011, likely due to a bunch of factors affecting seafood.

Was my first job when I was 15 or so. I am now 28 and live in a completely different town that has one I go to from time to time. Still good in my opinion.

We got skippers around here and malls have ivans or ivars or whatever its called. I cant read the font. Lol

Skippers is pretty good. Id imagine its just like ljs.

Thete alot of fast food places thst have disappeared ovet the years.

There are plenty of LJS here, but it's the HQ of parent company Yum. There's a combination LJS and Taco Bell very near my house. It's one of the nicest kept fast food restaurants I've been in.

That's what I got! Ha!

I did one chicken, one fish. The fish was a lot better than the weird cut of chicken I got. And the cookie was surprisingly tasty!

Now if you'll excuse me, I have diarrhea.

It's fast food seafood what do you expect? It's like saying McDonalds and Wendys and BK and Taco Bell are low tier burger/chicken/mexican joints. People eat it because its cheap, fast and covenant not because it's the freshest and highest of quality.

Of course i can make my own burgers and chicken and mexican that are far fresher, healthier and tastier.

Where I'm located, we have so many seafood places, it is considered fast food.

There is a dual LJS and KFC in my town. Haven't gone to it in nearly 10 years because we had a very bad experience there, but it's still chugging along.

The LJS in my family's hometown was briefly Flavor Flav's chicken joint.

I miss LJS. Haven't had it since I moved out of Iowa. Chicken planks and hush puppies in ranch is delightful.

This fast food chain used to be everywhere when I was a kid. The fried cod, the amazing hush puppies and the plentiful batter crumbs. It was all so amazing and now it is next to impossible to find one.

Did our country fall out of love with fish? Mismanaged?

I'm sitting in the parking lot of one now. I make a point to stop and eat whenever I spot one in the wild. I do a lot of traveling and I might spot one or two a year.

There's one in Riverside, on Arlington. Only one I've seen since as a child in Florida (so, decades now, sigh).

Of course, with a gluten sensitivity I can no longer get their fried clams. : (

Deep-fried fish, yes. Captain D's is also in decline (though I'm not sure if that's a regional chain). There was ONE Long John Silvers in like 50 mile radius around me over the past 15 or so years I've been here. If I went about 100-150 miles, there were like 1-2 extra.

Captain D's meanwhile there was like 4-5 in that 150 mile radius. But the local 2 within the 50 mile radius closed up in the 2000-2009 area.

Think there's one still in town and I'm kind of wanting this now. Didn't care for their fish but I loved the chicken all battered up. Greasy as shit too. The hush puppies are noticeably smaller than in the past so I assume quality/quantity is down overall. Might buzz over and see if the place is still open tonight.

I last went to one like 10 years ago in Kentucky. They're non-existent in the northeast afaiknew, but seems there is one about 20 mins away! I will have to check it out.

Kinda sucky thing where I am (NH)...we're right on the coast in what you'd think was a seafood mecca (and it kinda is) but there are like no quick and reasonably priced options outside of seasonal 'shacks' that are only around June-Sept. Everything else is sit-down and generally pricey. I for one, welcome anybody that wants to open a LJS and/or Red Lobster franchise in my city. I'll go!

Well, the one I'm always by is way too greasy and makes me sick, but other than that one, I like Long John Silvers. That said, I know it's really not great, but it's the only fast food chain restaurant I've tried that's any good at all (Captain D's is absolute shit.)

There isn't an LJS within 25 miles of where I live. The former LJS in town is now a Thai restaurant. Down the street from there is a former Taco Bell that is now a Moroccan restaurant. I love when former fast food joints become something good.

I have the legendary Long johns/Taco Bell combo store

I have a Long Johns/KFC combo in one town near me, and a KFC/Taco Bell combo in another town in the opposite direction near me. :p

I liked Long Johns, but the one near me stopped having half the stuff they used to have that were great. No more popcorn shrimp, clam strips, etc.

Yeah it's sad. I actually don't like fish but their battered chicken is great plus hush puppies are fantastic.

Had one like a mile away or less from me that closed years ago but always used to go to like once a month.

Next closest is a combo taco bell/ljs which is honestly better as more choice but like 5 miles away so meh

I miss Hot 'n Now, at least in terms of bottom-tier fast food. It was damn cheap. Only two stores remain open.

Hotnnow.jpg

I just love this name, ya know. Like how Little Ceasar's is marketing "Hot n Ready" like its such a great catchphrase. "Its not cold, and, well, its here!"

like imagine any other service marketing itself like that. "Garry's Guns: You can hold them, and they work!"

There's a lot around me (Midwest). Really enjoy their fish tacos, but I rarely eat there because it's so greasy that you kind of have to eat it in the restaurant.

I've never seen one before but I keep seeing commercials lately. They must be out in the suburbs somewhere nearby.

We still have an Arctic Circle outside of town. Always had good memories of that place.
