what happened to "play it loud" nintendo?

"The N64 was the peak of Nintendo!" says a panel of experts who were small children when it was released.

Powerful hardware, stellar 1st party games, stuff like perfect dark, killer instinct, golden eye, major 3rd party partnership. Did the n64 really change the direction of the entire company? Has segas death as a hardware manufacturer stricken them with fear? What happened?

"Play it loud" was the tagline for Game Boy marketing, and I would never call that "powerful hardware", especially when compared to it's direct competitors, the Atari Lynx and Sega Game Gear.

I think when you have a workforce to take care of, investors to keep happy, you will look for markets that will keep your business healthy.

Get a Wii.

This.

Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are better than the majority of games from this entire console generation.

Nintendo has always and continues to put out excellent first-party titles for their consoles. The only thing that varies from system-to-system is third party support, which is not fully in their control.

A lot of reasons have contributed to the shift in tone of video game marketing. The average age of console gamers is trending upwards. The video game market is rapidly expanding to be more inclusive. Design and advertising trends tend towards a more industrial minimalism. Nintendo didn't even adopt the "Play It Loud" campaign independently–-it was primarily a response to Sega of America's "90's 'tude". In Sega's absence, Nintendo was free to forge its own path, so to speak.

The n64 and Gamecube was the peak of Nintendo. It was a straight drop after that. Nothing on Wii can come close to the splendors of Super Mario 64, the glory of ocarina, and the awe of Starfox.

Good lord are you out of touch. Try playing Super Mario Galaxy sometime and try and tell me it doesn't beat your silly on-rails furry space shooter. Also, Ocarina nostalgia-glasses are the worst.

To be fair, I still like Nintendo. Galaxy is a masterpiece, KI: Uprising is one of my games of the year, Pushmo is awesome... but the hotness just doesn't seem to come as fast and as heavily as it did in days of yore. Maybe that'll change now that they have a digital outlet for smaller, more experimental titles...

Part of my frustration is probably NOA's fault, though. Those guys a buncha punk asses. They got high off all that casual money and are looking kind of ashy now that they've got to go back to selling real games. Your body better be ready for a coffin if I don't get Fire Emblem soon, motherfucker.

It'd seem more appropriate to compare directly (SM64 and SMG), closest Star Fox 64 has is Sin & Punishment 2, and not only is that a third party developing for Nintendo but the N64 had the first S&P anyway. And Zelda's just a mess, I do prefer OoT over SS and consider it equal to TP (TP better tuned, OoT better about freedom), but I liked LttP most of all Zelda and Wind Waker the most of the 3D ones.

Still, I think in general Nintendo's still very strong, it's just the N64 was a revolutionary time for the industry while the GC refined a lot of what was introduced then, with the Wii generally picking up where the GC faltered (SMS was great but disappointing, SMG1 & 2 are great period). Not to mention some of the great revivals like Donkey Kong Country and Punch-Out, and stuff from newly acquired developers like Xenoblade, honestly I'd consider the Wii above GC in most respects.

Okay this thread is just fucking wierd now lol

obviously nintendo should go back in time and change everything they did with the wii since it was such a failure for them.

I know it was just marketing but as many have pointed out it was different era of nintendo. You could argue that capcom has stayed pretty much the same while someone like say konami has pretty much disappeared but for other reasons. The old nintendo still catered to the casual market too. Now a days we aren't and its evident. Now that I think about it maybe 3ds is to blame. If anything it would have been the hardcore that wanted 3d and we see where that went.
