What happened to the iPod?

I love my watch, but I don't exactly love the idea of jogging with a $1200 device flimsily around my wrist. A $100 iPod nano with an aux port and a hard drive that doesn't suck that I can wirelessly sync music to would be a dream come true.

They don't even have to redesign anything.

Gimme an iPad nano and an iPod nano, Apple. Give me a reason to give you even more money.

iPod Nanos already have an aux port, the design you pictured is two generations old, and while they could theoretically increase the capacity of the 7G and add wifi, Apple's focus now is getting people signed up for Apple Music and using the App Store, neither of which the Nano has access to.

Now you want an iPad Nano too?

Tim Cook, resign immediately and tell the Apple board to hire the OP as CEO without delay.

I suspect the main reason the Classic was discontinued ahead of the other iPods was because it was getting harder for them to procure the specialized components necessary to manufacture them, namely the hard drives. One could argue they could have introduced a flash-based iPod Classic to replace it, but they probably didn't see a big enough market anymore.

In other words, the only reason the iPod Touch is still around is because it has such a large overlap with the iPhone hardware.
I think Tim Cook were pretty open about the parts issues at a conference a coupe of years ago. It's not that the parts are particularly expensive but if they're generally available and you're the only people using them and only in limited numbers, it;s naturally going to inflate the price.

I don't think it's going to happen but I am hoping that Apple's interest in acquiring TIDAL may signal that they're looking to expand their music service so that it incorporates higher quality audio which could give them reason to consider a return to the iPod Classic type of player.

This would likely include replacement of the traditional hard drive with some sort of solid state drive. I do think that if they do that it wouldn't include the traditional line-out but a lightning port instead. Bear in mind that details of the upcoming iPhone show that the traditional headphone socket has already gone.

The digital lighting port should be fantastic for good quality music although it's not going to be convenient for the majority of people who care about this stuff.

OP just wants Apple to make him bespoke products everytime he feels one of their existing products is too big, or too small, or too expensive, or lacking a very specific function. What's so hard to understand?

And if OP wants it, that automatically means it would sell like hot cakes.

What a depressing thread. I need a small mp3 player with physical buttons, but they probably are going to stop making them. Sounds like almost no one wants them. Sony might still make a few of those $1200 Sony walkmen for specialty customers, but that's probably about it.

Everyone either took me seriously or didn't care on that page. I need to up my game. Maybe I should've posted a picture of me pointing to a Nano taped to my forehead.

Well...no one really cares. There isn't a reason for you to make three posts in the same page of how great carrying two devices is. What's up with the constant off topic photos, too?

I think you would realize how great carrying one unified device is, well, if you just updated your old phone to a smart phone. Either an iPhone, Android, or WP would do the job for you rather than just having one device.

He was trolling. He was trying to say that a dedicated MP3 device is pointless because a smartphone does everything you need and there's no reason to carry two devices.

The iPhone is becoming more and more of an anti-music device. (No AUX, lo-fi quality, abysmal music app)

It would take 15 minutes to slap together a click wheel iPod Nano with wireless iOS sync and a proper aux cable.

Not having a badass iPod on the lineup is leaving money on the table.

I own a 128gb iphone 6s+ with unlimited data and I still want a dedicated mp3 player, lulz.

Ive owned serval ipods over the years but the capacity has always been too low and Ive wanted to switch to a flash based model for awhile.

Those Fiios offerings look promising but I bet my car's head unit won't be able to make heads or tails of their file system with such a large library. Ive watched it choke on a large USB stick before. Apple products are the only things that work flawlessly with it.

How about a 6th gen iPod nano with a 64GB hard drive and wireless iOS sync?

Was just thinking at the gym about lack of cheap small wifi only devices just to run apps. Would be perfect for Spotify and stuff.

Or maybe I'm too old and don't keep up with these things.

So make one.

Smartwatches mostly do that, but they stil need a year or two.

With 256kbps files id need 256gb minimum to house them all and id like to move up to 320kbps.
A 256GB thumb drive costs $60. Toss in some old iPod parts and they could sell it for around $250. One of those old nanos even had a crappy camera on it. Improve that a little and add wireless sync and you have yourself a cash cow.

Literally no iPod has been a cash cow for years, because they're iPods, and what you're describing is a small iPhone with buttons.

You need buttons, but don't really need a click wheel. The latest generation of Nano with the volume buttons and all purpose middle button works perfectly well.

Maybe the iPod does more, ever think of that? A camera that doesn't suck, maybe? How about multitasking? Instead of using the space for an LTE modem, they could put a iPad mini sized chip in there and I can finally have a pocketable device that can get shit done. Large iPhones aren't more capable than small iPhones, so they're pointless to me.

If you're talking about CPU, the iPhone SE has a newer/better CPU than what is in the iPad Mini 4.

Fuck I hate to see dedicated music devices die. The "do-it-all" device forces the consumer to accept lower quality shit just so everything can be crammed into one box.

You could buy a used iPhone 5C off eBay for like $140. Works with Pokemon Go.

I'm amazed that streaming services are popular considering how much easier it is on bandwidth and money to simply download music and sync it to the iPod. Especially if you're a repeat listener. If your internet is dead, then good luck having access to music.

It's easier to download and sync the music through the streaming app on your phone than it is to plug in an iPod and sync it to a computer. 13% of people in the US don't have a PC to sync with anyway, and that number is growing.
