• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

What have I done?! I just joined 3DS GAF!

So I'm up to 7 games now and I'm still waiting for the system to get here lol. Maybe if I'm lucky it'll come today but it seems like tomorrow or Thursday is more likely.

I picked up 3DS's for both me and my kids for the holidays as well and starting to look for deals on games. There is a sale going on right now at Best Buy on Fire Emblem for $14.99 so I picked that up. Now looking for deals on Pokémon and Animal Crossing.

go into options, turn off all animations, set game speed to "fast", tada
Bye bye half of what makes it fun and still doesn't fix the long and boring story in every game? It's just not for me, man. I tried to simply not address it but y'all drew these complaints out of me. :p

GAF, I've been out of the Nintendo loop for a long time now but I finally bit on a 3DSXL. Is there any reason I shouldn't just download everything from the Eshop? I remember something about their account systems being crazy and that I may not be able to go back and download it again later, any truth to that?

Hah, weird, I was just coming into this thread to ask the exact same thing.

My current understanding is that if I download something to the console, and then lose/break/microwave the console, then all the games on it are gone forever.

It's really putting me off digital purchases, if that is the case.

That is indeed the case. You can apparently contact Nintendo in that case? I don't know. I only buy digital when games aren't available in physical form :P

it's all good. I will say the game really opens up around chapter 7, 8, or 9 I believe. can't remember. but if it's not for you it's not for you. ain't nothing wrong with that

and fwiw I always play FE at home or when I'm flying somewhere

Thanks, unless there's some crazy good deal I think I'll stick with physical copies so.

this is kind of the case now, but it seems like that's all slowly beginning to change with the Nintendo Network IDs coming to 3DS next month

but I have heard a few accounts of people breaking their 3DS, calling Nintendo support and having them track their purchases and then being allowed to re-download them once they got their new system

I got a reg 3DS and even though I wonder if I should've gotten an XL, I feel an air of superiority over 2DS owners.
I've had both (traded the 3ds xl in), and i have to say the 2DS is significantly more ergonomic and comfortable than the 3ds is. Nothing to feel superior about, the 2DS is an excellent device.

My daughter left her 3DSXL on a plane yesterday. What happens if I contact Nintendo about getting all my purchases back (does that include Ambassador games?), but then the 3DS gets returned (I know this won't happen).

LOL you already have more games than I do and I've had it since March.
You can't go wrong though, unless you picked an awful seven games, glad so many more Gaffers seem to be getting a 3DS

Alright GAF, I jumped in similar to the OP but have a few questions. Quick rundown first:

I bought a 3DSXL from Amazon, it should be here today.
I bought an ambassador 3DS from CL.
I just found an unused Wii points code
I do have access to a DSi which has likely never been online

Looking it up it looks like the points card can be used only on Wii/DSi, I don't have any other Wii games I want so my thought was to use this on a friends DSi, buy games, system transfer to ambassador 3DS, system transfer from ambassador 3DS to 3DSXL.

DSi loses purchased games
3DS loses ambassador games
3DSXL gains DSi games + ambassador games

Am I missing anything?

Can you turn off the 3D in the e-store? The level slider makes no difference and a lot of the 3D box art hurts my eyes.

So. GAF. Talk to me about Pokemon. I have absolutely no interest in the TV show and have never played a Pokemon game.

Do the games stand on their own as decent RPGs, without being a fan of the franchise previously?

Yes, pokemon is an excelent strategy game .

Umm so after an hour or so with the 3DS XL, I think it's kind of crap.

- Why are the screens so dim even on the brightest settings? Everything seems so washed out and faded
- Does this thing even really need 2 screens? (Just seems like a waste of space and gimmicky)
- The XL is really uncomfortable to hold, maybe I'd prefer a regular 3DS
- FE:A is pretty nice at least

I think I'm going to return this for a regular 3DS.

Eh? My brother's looks great. Did you try various angles?

A few games without needing to flip between gameplay and menus should help change your mind, though some original DS games make better active gameplay use than 3DS games seem to. I dunno, I really like the DS concept.

Nothing to change that, I suppose. Have you used the DS Lite? The normal 3DS is basically like that.

Yeah it just looks weird. Maybe it's because I'm used to dat vita OLED?

I was expecting gameolay on the 2nd screen not just maps/menus. It's pointless to me so far

This is my first DS ever so I have no reference point.

Ooohhhhhh, you didn't mention that. ^__^

OLED is screen perfection. You will never be satisfied with less now.

I find it a convenience, but you may want to try Kirby's Canvas Curse from original DS for an idea of gameplay uses.

Ah. A lot of people find the vanilla 3DS cramped, but some prefer it. I don't mind either way, but I do like the large screens due to any text in games. I just don't like reading tiny shit. I also feel like the 3D has more impact when it is occupying a larger space of my vision.

I recently got my 3DS and I just finished ALBW. Still have Poke X, FE, AA, and Harvest Moon on the backlog. And today I just got my copy of SMT IV, so guess those games will stay in the backburner for a while longer lol.

For the XL, press the slider down until it clicks. That fully turns off the 3D.

I have both and prefer the orginal because games look more vibrant and the 3D works much better. Also the orginal has an additional brightness setting but that only automatically activates when it's charging. However everything else about the XL is much better, the original is less comfortable to hold and It doesn't have that anti glare screen that the XL has though that anti glare screen is what causes the screen to look washed out.

So it seems holding it like a 2DS is the best option for me. I think Nintendo should make a 1DS. Cut the gimmicks!

So hooked on Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, so hooked. My $14.99 copy of Fire Emblem will have to wait.
It's no hyperbole or launch-goggles - Shadow Wars is a fantastic game. To think I almost skip it because of the Ghost Recon license :P

Mario 64 is $11.99 at BB with Games Unlocked. Should I bite or just try 3D land?

If you've never played Mario 64 before, you could go for that, but 3D land is probably worth playing more at this point.

Seriously, check out some old DS games that use the touch-screen well. Canvas Curse, Elite Beat Agents, Ghost Trick, the Ace Attorney series, Trauma Center, 999. It's not a gimmick.

The two screens are hardly a gimmick.

I am playing FE and it serves no purpose besides a map that isn't needed (it's linear) and information that could be displayed as overlays. This is one of the best 3DS games out this year and it doesn't utilize the second screen for anything that couldn't be done on one. That screams gimmick to me.

I wish I had the option to display the main screen on the bottom

Why don't new games use it for anything interesting?

less clutter on screen though :P

For 3ds games, I think monster hunter has my favorite use of two screens. There's just too much for it to all be on one screen. Also you can have a dpad on the touch screen.

And if you don't like a game you won't be able to sell it or trade it with anyone in the future. The only way I will go all digital is if they stop making games physical. But we already pay like $30-$60 per game and I don't feel like having to upgrade hard drives when I can just buy the disc. Having to install games to the PS4 is kind of annoying in that aspect because I bought the disc so I wouldn't have to worry about upgrading the hard drive later on.

Edit: Got my DS and for some reason had to do system format for it to realize that I can use WPA2 instead of WEP. Weeeeird.

My impressions of the hardware and OS are they're fairly simple and mundane, after coming from a Vita it's obviously not going to be impressive but that's to be expected. I only bought this for the games anyway. I do have some things to say though.

-The analog "thing" is one of the worst I've ever used. It's impossible for my thumb to gain any traction while using it and I'm always fighting it as it slowly slides off during a game.

-Where are the god damn GBA games Nintendo? Castlevania, the golden suns, the mega man battle networks etc. Give them to me now! I'm not interested in NES or original game boy games.

-Miis are still a monstrosity and do not belong in this realm. Back to hell where you belong demons.

-Zelda is pretty cool so far. Still pretty early as I just unlocked the ability to rent items.

-Paper Mario is meh so far. I'm not bothered that it's not a RPG as I saw the potential of the sticker system to force difficult choices on you in battles but so far the only "difficult" choice I've had to make is what powerful or semi-powerful sticker to use because I ran out of basic hammer and jump attacks. Not exactly what I was hoping for there.

-Mario 3D Land is so. damn. boring. I know by now there's another set of worlds after the first 8 that are supposed to be tougher but I honestly don't know if I can make it that far. I'm almost to world 4 and it's a struggle to keep going. The graphics are nice as is the music and the nostalgia stuff but there's not a lot of gameplay here.

So hooked on Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, so hooked. My $14.99 copy of Fire Emblem will have to wait.

I've been wanting to play that but it's the only game that hasn't reached me yet. Guess I have the 3rd party amazon seller and their cheapness with shipping to thank for that.

Wow, man :(

I say, wait for the later levels. But I consider this game one of the best platformers I've ever played, and I'm a big enthusiast of the genre. You should be having fun by now, lol.

Well I'm no expert on the platformer genre, or very great at playing them (not anymore at least. I was beastly in the SNES days), but I haven't been challenged at all yet. The star coins in each level haven't even been difficult to find yet and in my opinion if nintendo games are going to be all gameplay they need to be at least slightly challenging, otherwise I feel like I'm just hopping on basic things to get to the next area.

I wish there was more to do in each level besides collect star coins too because often I'll have all 3 before I've seen the whole level but there's nothing else to do besides collecting coins for extra lives...and I'm already at 45 lives. I know a lot of nintendo fans don't like this but this is where I feel like achievements could spice things up a bit. Right now I have no motivation to do anything but collect star coins, but they could add level-specific challenges that focus on pulling off a tough move at a certain spot or something like that. It would give me a reason to stay in each area and explore a bit.

What games?

3D Land
Zelda
Paper Mario
Ghost Recon
Fire Emblem
Luigi's Mansion 2
Mario and Luigi

This befuddles me as well. I have an ambassador 3DS (sigh) and have a few GBA titles as a result, but it's completely asinine that Nintendo sits on so much of their old library and does nothing with it.

I found that I liked it more after stopping playing it entirely for months and then returning with no expectations. It's a finely crafted game, but you're right -- it's just not very new or interesting. Better than NSMB2 at least, but I don't feel like that's saying much.
Thank god 3D World for Wii U turns on the crazy a couple worlds in.

My favorite games on the system are probably FE and the Zeldas. Pokemon is great too.
