What if... Capcom released a 3D SF game with this unique graphical style?!

nobody has at all created a decent 2D fighting experience, both in speed, response, and gameplay, yet, but if they somehow did it, awesome.

I'm pointing to my own avatar.... !

As it stands accent core is the best 2D fighting experience I've had, and I have a personal bias for it. I'm willing to change that though if SF4 can prove itself, heh - just because I love SF.

Apply some filters on a high quality 3D model, and it's nearly upto the quality of that 2D drawing anyway.

yeah I disagree about this, being an artist and all that. While 3D is nice and I definitely appreciate the gameplay mechanics and visuals of a nice 3D game, when it comes to SF I definitely want to see 2D. For one reason because of the gameplay and I don't want things like side stepping, or slower game play, and for another reason that while a 3D model might be up to par in terms of quality with that of a 2D drawing, the 3D models never have the style, charm, or animation effects of hand drawn sprites. Never will. Why? Because it's a drawing, drawn by hand, from artists whom have styles, personalities, and flaws and that's always been more interesting to me than bland 3D graphics.

Well, stuff like Viewtiful Joe I think would age as well as 2D.

I'm more concerned with the speed of the game and the hit detection.

If Capcom can pull that off in a 2D cel shaded SF4, that would work for me.

At first I was going to apologize to linking to this thread in a more recent thread in a "I told you so" fashion.

However the more this junior types, the less I feel like apologizing for it. >:|

yeah the posts are ancient, but I'm responding anyway!

TToB is [was] absolutely right. It is just a visual style. A visual style that, typically, introduces things that break the "feel" of a 2D fighting game.

The problem is that no developer has tried to strip these things away. There's no reason a developer couldn't make a 2D game with an orthographic perspective, mirrored left and right sides, and absolutely no interpolation between keyframes. Sadly, it isn't a question of "could."

LOL!

The visuals in the Street Fighter 4 trailer are really close to the art in the OP. I don't think there is any reason to go back to 2D now.

Sucky as this shit would of probably turned out to be, I was kinda looking forward to the title.

PROBABLY WOULD'VE BEEN A FUCK LOAD BETTER THAN CAPCOM FIGHTING EVOLUTION!

Yeah, well, we will never know. How awesome could those eBattles about the craptitude have been?

Anyways, whatever Capcom has in store--be it 2D, 2.5D or full on 3D--I think I'm ready for it. I mean we're already getting a "new", online, 2D Street Fighter so bring on some crazy shit.

No way dude.

Get your eyes checked.

The character art in the SF4 trailer is terrible. Strip away all the fancy ink blots and all that shit, and it's hideous. Capcom needs to call in a crack team of art ninjas to fix that shit double fast!

Don't really follow SF that closely, but when did they turn Cammy from a military chick who happened to be in a skimpy outfit into hooker?

Coming from a guy who likes thundercats.

Yeah, I enjoy Thundercats.

Is it my most favorite thing ever?

No.

Did it age comparatively well when stacked against the other commercial adverstisements I wasted my youth with? Yes. :P

And ignoring your tangential bullshit - you cannot tell me with a straight face that the character art in the SF4 trailer compares favorably with any past SF games, barring SF1.

It looks f@cking terrible.

Without Capcom's fantastic art, this game will look more boring and dull than Virtua Fighter's characters. I dread seeing my favorite SF characters rendered with brutish facial features and hideous 90's Image comics style body features. Yech!

SF4 isnt perfect but its not terrible.

You might have a point with art from 1992 if this were still 1992. However we've seen companies provide highly stylized video game visuals that come closer to concept art than we've seen before! In 1992 those character portraits were the hotness.

Street Fighter 4 is working from bad art at the base level. If they had some talent behind it, I'm certain it could be gorgeous; unfortunately what I saw was plenty atrocious. Ryu and Ken are barely recognizable, considering the concept art and in game sprites have come closer and closer since 1992.

Capcom settled on a look for Ryu and Ken a few years back. SF4 throws the baby out with the bath water.

I hope SF4 is nothing like that promo video, or that it is and it's total broken shit. Heaven or Hell, let's rock! :P

I feel dirty for agreeing with you.

What about 2D sprites fighting in 3D environments?

It would still (technically) be a 2D fighting game, but it would be unique from other Street Fighter games.

And then Capcom could mix it up and include 2D environments as well.

Old thread is old. Still relevant?

Anyways, is the art for the new SF really that bad? Where can I see it? My internet connection sucks, and I've been able to view exactly zero videos for a week now. : ( Frakkin' China.

Junior, you're replying to a post made over a year ago...

why?

In term of gameplay, speed and all that, viewtiful joe is the 3D game that made me feel 2D the most. It's just so responsive, with really fast "street fighter like" combos !

Clover could have done it !

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is what you want. It had 2D sprites and 3D backgrounds.

I'd like to mention a game that wasn't around when TToB began this year-old argument: Battle Fantasia. Whether it is proof that 3D can have the precision of a 2D fighter, I cannot say as I've never played it or seen it in real life (only internet videos). However it certainly has the charm and style of a 2D fighter. I've been following it since the end of '06 when I first read about it, but unfortunately don't live in a place where play testing is possible.

In a nutshell it's a high-res 2D fighter with 3D character models. It runs on the same arcade board (Taito X2) as SF4 was rumored to run on in one of those huge SF4 threads.

From the poor quality vids it looks like it handles like a 2D fighter, but one of the fighting game j-gaffers (Lyte Edge or TreIII, I think) have said otherwise, and they've probably actually played the game.

Well, VJ was great and it did a great job of replicating a 2D beat em up, and Ultimate Ghouls and Ghosts did a great job of replicating GnG in 3D, but the hit detection of both games isn't at all like the hit detection in SF2 or SF3.

Hell, even New Super Mario Bros didn't feel like Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World as far as hit detection goes.

So while it may be theoretically possible to perfectly duplicate the speed, precision, and feel of 2D SF with 3D graphics, I don't think it's been executed yet.

I don't think you understand, the gameplay mechanics SUCK in their 3d fighters (well at least in SF). It has nothing (well very little) to do with the actual graphical style, which can easily be remedied.

And the fallacy that obnoxious black outlines = cell shading also needs to die.

The best looking cell shaded game around didn't need 'em, and the lack of them made it all the more enjoyable.
Okami does have black outlines, however

In fact, if you actually stop and look at gutter trash's avatar, you'll note the distinct lack of an obnoxious black outline.

Unless the style calls for it, Okami's Sumi-e brush style; black outlines are a cop-out assertion that "it's like a cartoon!"

Jet Shit Radio for example just looked like an ugly PSone game WITH FAT BLACK OUTLINES, ZOMG! :P

I'm hoping developers explore more experimental graphical stylings as time marches on. And in this case, it could be the first step to reinvigorating Capcom's old money maker.

Fail.

Wind Waker's style was named Toon Shading.

If they oughta make a new 3D Street Fighter game, might as well use this art/presentation :

I am sooo sorry guys....

The trailer looksgreat but in reality we will never see a game looks like it. The trailer looks interesting not just because of the new art style but the perspective as well. And that perspective doesnt really suitable for multiplayers game, especially when you need to know what your opponent is doing. I'd love to see they nail the new style in as well, but SF mechanic doesnt really support 3D either. All those projectile moves will become nonsense since you should be able to move out of the way in a simple side step.

Anyway, I want to see megaton when it come out so, make it happen Capcom.

I wasn't really wishing of getting this kind of perspective; this could be a replay à la Gran Turismo... But yeah, of course it's wishful thinking!
