What if The Force Awakens sucks?

Then JJ will have slipped up with two iconic space set franchises.

I doubt it'll suck though. The question is will it excel? No JJ film has excelled IMHO but I guess so long as it's solid that'll do.

Star Trek: Into Darkness's greater purpose was to teach JJ how not to reference old movies.

Enough good talent choice decisions were made that I can't see it being bad, but if it's a disappointment... minor effect on TFA but reduced hype for follow-ups The Hobbit style.

I would rather have it sucking bigtime than it being mediocre. But honestly this prequel rage is just an internet thing i believe. I never ever heard people complain about them irl situations where movies come up.

I'll eat crow later if I have to but I imagine worst case it will be better than the prequels but not as good as the originals. That's worst case. If I had to bet, I would say it will be good enough to trigger some debates over where it ranks among the OT (e.g., not as great as Empire, not as groundbreaking as ANH, but better than ROTJ).

If it's better then the prequel movies (which I think it will be at the very least) I'll be satisfied

JJ/Disney does have the benefit of lowered expectations, following the prequels. Regardless of how good the movie actually is (and I expect it'll at least be okay), just being better than the prequels plus the thrill of seeing the OT cast alone will bump it into megahit status.

Prepare yourselves for a lot of hacky "Return of the Jedi"-pun headlines regarding SW being [Empire Strikes] "back".

He'll review it whether it's good or bad. He liked Star Trek: The Star Trek, despite its flaws.

It's been like 3 damn years! Ffs!!!

Well it's been 3 years since a Star Trek or Star Wars movie came out.

It would be disappointing, but not particularly surprising.

I'm personally very excited to see the film, but I'm not at all convinced that what we're seeing in the trailers isn't hiding some excessively cartoony element to the film that will turn off a lot of people. I'm talking about the segment of longtime fans that were fed up with the prequels, as opposed to the hardcore who became apologists, or the younger ones who have their own legitimate nostalgia. Star Wars as a property is going to have a hard time winning back the hearts and minds of people like me. The character of Maz Kanata alone is a big question mark that could make or break a significant portion of the film as far as I'm concerned.

In terms of box office, I'm sure it will be successful no matter what.

Overall I have more faith in J.J. Abrams than the average internet commentator, but it's a steep hill to climb and Into Darkness gave me enough pause to keep my expectations in check.

It's obvious that the internet will explode and cease to exist. Then we wait for Episode 8 to see if there are any improvements or it became even worse.

I honestly don't think it can ever live up to the hype. We've been waiting so long for new Star Wars, but y'all remember both Star Trek movies right? They were alright, I enjoyed them, but they could have been so much better. Sadly I'm gonna say SW will probably not be as good as it could be...but it will still be good. Once we're past the "omg new star wars" hype, I think people will be able to look with a more critical eye.

The popular contention is that J.J. Abrams doesn't have any special love or interest for Star Trek, so was only concerned with making bankable movies, while on the other hand he is a huge Star Wars fan and would be more likely to put out a true labor of love.

Of course I don't know if that's 100% true, but I like to hope.

Isn't it almost guaranteed to suck? The OT is nostalgia. It was new back then. We watch it now and see it's kinda hokey, but charming. The story and the characters are what sold it, not the action sequences (although some of the battles are iconic).

With the new films, I guarantee it's going to have prequilogy-levels of dumb action scenes. None of the characters are going to feel Star Wars-y. We'll have writers trying to recreate what they think Star Wars is. We'll have Harrison Ford trying to act like what people expect of Solo, rather than act like Solo.

I'm sure it will be a solid film. I'm sure it will make a fuckton of money. And I'm sure a lot of people are going to enjoy it and it will introduce a lot of people to the Star Wars universe.

I just don't think it'll be a good Star Wars film. I'd love to be wrong, but I have 0 hype for the movie. Maybe I'll check it out in theaters if the reviews are favorable, but I'm not holding my breath.

It probably will in a sense. I feel like people are expecting to have the magic of the first 3 movies happen all over, and I just don't think that's possible given how much of a known entity the star wars universe is a this point. So even if it's good, I feel like people won't feel that it lived up to their hype or unreasonable expectations

If the movie sucks, like actually "rotten" on RT:
  • It will still make oodles of money upon release, but the opening weekend for the sequels will suffer.
  • There will still be several sequels (which could surpass it in quality) because the gears are already in motion
  • There will be comparisons of quality between the new trilogy and the prequel trilogy and an uprising of contrarians saying "George Lucas wasn't so bad after all". The prequel trilogy is entering nostalgia territory, after all.
  • Fans will call for J.J. Abrams' blood (this might happen even if the movie is decent)

There is no possibility that it will be a "bad" movie. Without a doubt it will be an entertaining and fun adventure filled with nostalgic references to the previous films.

However, among nerdom, it will be seen as shitty. With the amount of expectation that is surrounding this film, it is literally impossible for it to live up to the hype. No film could.

Even worse, Star Wars fandom is not some monolithic entity that agrees on every aspect of the Star Wars universe. There is a sizable population that will get pissed off if some minor detail of the Millennium Falcon is incorrect or there is some mild plot inconsistency with the previous films. "But Aquaman...you cannot marry Wonder Woman. You're from two different worlds..."

In the end, the general population will think it was a good time. A significant percentage of Star Wars fans will think it's the greatest thing ever because they've been waiting for a new film for so long. There will also be a sizable group who will see it as the fucking apocalypse because "Leia reached for the saber with her left hand and she's supposed to be right handed!!" or something to that effect.

It won't suck.

But it probably won't be 'great' either, I don't think anything J.J has done has been truly great or even close to it.

But it'll probably be a good time and compared to the prequels will feel like a masterpiece.

The Star Trek movies aren't bad. I thought most people's complaints were "this isn't what Trek is supposed to be!"?

I'm more interested in seeing what the main reasons for the inevitable blowback will be. There will be people who dislike and even rabidly hate the movie, that I'm sure of. The franchise doesn't have any unifying things except for ANH, ESB, and maybe KotOR. Everything else always causes some sort of divide, even TCW which the hardest of hardcore EU people hate due to the way it messed up Genndy's Clone Wars and the rest of the original Clone Wars Multimedia Project.

If it sucks you'll be hearing about it non stop from Star Wars fans for the rest of your life. There's no winning there.

It'll make discussion about Man of Steel, Age of Ultron & TDKR look trivial.

I imagine it'll be amazing the first viewing or so but then as you think about and watch it again you'll see the glaring flaws and think it sucks...

The suggestions from some that a bad movie will get a pass from Star Wars fans is laughable. We have already seen what happens.

My expectations are so low that I won't be disappointed.

that last Star Trek shitshow of a movie won't let me be excited for this.

I think it will be decent but incredibly safe and predictable to appease crazy fans, which will hurt it in the long run.

Also wtf has Disney got to do with it sucking or not? They produce duds all the time.
