What is Bungie's best game?

Always going to be Myth for me. They sent me free tickets to E3 just because i registered the game and lived in the area! Plus i loved the online battles and lobbies where everyone gathered, talked about the game, formed clans and the rankings are always sweet!

Probably Halo 3. It was the height of both Halo and Bungie's success. And it slowly went downhill from there. That isn't to say ODST or Reach we're bad. Both were great. But Halo's golden days ended with the trilogy.

I don't know how people are saying Destiny. It launched as a massive disappointment and only continued to disappoint even further with all of those terrible "expansions" for a full year until Taken King arrived and overhauled the mess. Despite the improvements, Destiny kind of tore Bungie apart as a developer to the point the original Bungie is barely there.

Halo 2 changed Online gaming on console, not disputing that, but personally my favourite is:

Destiny

And I say that as massive Halo fan/player

Marathon 1. Great sci-fi story, great sense of tension, and really pushed the genre forward technically (even if PC people weren't paying attention).

This is hard to compare though, because pre-MS Bungie was obviously much different than MS Bungie, or at least it felt that way to me as a long-time fan. It's hard to even consider them the same company.

I guess I have to say Halo Reach. I did not play the multiplayer at all so can't comment on that. Based on the campaign and firefight I consider Reach to be the pinnacle of Bungie's Halo. Though I need to make an honorable mention of Halo CE. I have a relationship so special with it...

Halo 2 by far. I spent more time in that game multi-player than any other. I was around 5,000+ games of multi-player played.

Halo 3 and Halo:CE were close.

For those who were around during the Halo 2 era, you have to admit Halo 2 is the reason Xbox Live became what it is today.

Halo CE

I still wish we got a real Halo 2. Large dynamic holistic battlezones. Story that services the gameplay not vice versa. Focus on pure "marine" gameplay.

Ce Campaign is untouchable for me, multiple GOAT missions, but I love the story in Reach, and it's multiplayer is king. Bloom and AL were bad, but the game was sooo good.

Myth II: Soulblighter is my favorite bungie game.

Still to this day its unmatched and no other strategy game comes close.

Where most RTS games focused on your usual base-building/harvesting resources and building units Myth was all about the combat and story, and it did both of them extremely well.

Multiplayer was also a HUGE thing for the game. It was literally the "Half-Life" of the RTS world back then, you had a ton of players and people were constantly turning out new mods and total conversions, everything from turning it into a wild west themed mode to nam and all kinds of things. They would have official tournaments and everything for the game that you could play and even win thingsi.

It's a shame what Bungie did to the game, they sold the rights to Take2, who made at hird one that wasn't nearly as good as Myth I or 2 and the IP has been dormant ever since.

Bungie shut down bungie.net many years ago but still people from the community refuse to let this amazing game die and have banded together over the years to keep mulitplayer alive through fan made services so people can still enjoy multiplayer, they even still run tournaments and things.

You can sum up the answers in this thread pretty easily based on the type of posters.

Most into Single Player content - Halo Reach

Most into Multiplayer - Halo 3

Most into Nostalgia - Halo: CE

Most into bad games - Destiny

My favourite is Reach. I did enjoy Destiny a lot though.

I still stand by CE as the single greatest game of all time.

H3 was outstanding.

But Destiny (and for me, Vanilla Destiny particularly) was a very special experience indeed. A handful of my favourite gaming moments have been in D1.

It might not be their best game, but it's my favourite.

Halo 2. Such an incredible game at the time and still today. Nearly everyone I knew played it, both LAN parties and online. People hated the wait, the Arbiter, and the ending but it's still my favorite.

Destiny for me. Didnt like the Myth games, even though most of my old friends loved it, and I haven't enjoyed a single Halo game.

Halo 3, I'm replaying it for the fifth time and that thing is legendary. Best shooter of last gen.
Followed closely by Reach. I'm probably changing my mind after playing reach for fifth time.

Not just Bungie's best game but the greatest work of art humanity has ever spawned: Halo Reach.

Even just focusing on the campaign. You start at the top of the hill after the pelican drops you off, analyzing the environment, passing by Moa's. The next hour of gameplay is the definition of perfect level design. In a unique way as well where you can backtrack all the way to the beginning of the level.

Up to the point where you meet the various colored Elites and get on the civilian vehicles. The environment's don't just feel connected, they actually are to the point where you can actually track your steps back to the begin of the mission on the hill Noble Team is dropped off on.

And while the multiplayer failed in terms of ranked Arena, Forge World and Firefight 2.0 and the social aspects were a step above Halo 3. And there was actually campaign theatre.

And the game's ending is better than Combat Evolved's.

Tough choice. My best experience with their games is split between:

  • Halo 3 multiplayer
  • Oni, Halo CE, Marathon and Marathon Infinity singleplayer
  • Marathon Infinity map making
  • Halo CE co-op
My favourite is probably Halo 3 MP. I'm writing that as a huge fan of Bungie for over 20 years.
Disappointed that Destiny wasn't my cup of tea.

I am old enough to have made levels for Marathon using their editor and had the experience of an actual Bungie employee email me in appreciation. So Marathon is my favorite. Halo holds a special place, but Halo 2 was the one that really nailed the story. Wish I had played any Halo after 2 but skipped on then. Destiny is in many ways more of a descendant of Marathon the character design and the world are more similar.

Myth 2 is simply phenomenal. Still holds up amazingly well today with the community patches that enable modern resolution.

It wasn't as groundbreaking as Halo, but it just has so much more personality. Felt like the last of the old Bungie games.

Halo 1, easily. Best story, best level design, best enemy design, an amazing weapon sandbox (even as slim and simple as it is), and arguably best multiplayer (though I probably prefer Halo 2 by a bit).

Halo 3 was a huge step back for the series in numerous ways, but yeah, it did a lot of things right too.

Agree. Remember the badass WW1 mods and stuff?
WW2 Recon was the most popular one, I loved it. The RPG mechanic (would go about twice as far as your aiming location IIRC) made trying to lead long range shots skillful. That and dodging grenades and even bullets (which were visible projectiles) was really fun. A sequel mod was made with tanks and various units that was good but couldn't beat the simple gameplay of Recon.

Most of that is thanks to Myth's physics system which was amazing at the time and I still haven't seen another strategy game with anything too similar. For example a key strategy in the first game was to have dwarves throw molotov cocktails a short distance over the Fetch unit. The Fetch would then force fire its lightning bolt attack on the ground right before the Molotov impacted, and that explosion would send the Molotov flying halfway across the map hopefully into enemies. We called it carpet bombing I think. Great use of rolling terrain and height advantages too.

The amped up physics in Halo CE that led to the Warthog jump video, launching weapons with grenades and such were no surprise after Myth. Really a lot of Myth's features ended up apparent in Halo. The really fleshed out replay playback, a lot of the MP game modes like Steal the Bacon (Oddball), the Celestial rankings, etc.

Great and very innovative game. It and Halo CE are both top 5 all time for me personally.

I think from a overall design standpoint Halo Reach is my favorite. Really wish it got a remaster as it's the only Halo that isn't 60fps now. Halo CE is definitely next in line, and while I love Destiny it's constant changing development makes it difficult to really put anywhere.

Today I'm thinking Halo 2. Challenging and interesting campaign with an epic and entertaining story, with a fast-paced and expansive multiplayer.

Maybe on a different day I'd pick ODST, Reach, or Destiny for different reasons.

Halo 3. It was the culmination in my opinion of what made Halo, Halo. The games afterwards can not reach the greatness Halo 3 had. It truly was a game of its time.

Halo 3 because it is overall the best halo game IMO at least. They nailed both the campaign and the multiplayer in that game unlike Halo 2 in which the single player was lacking.
