Also, wouldn't call it a joke but it's kind of a meme. People using the term edgelord as a lazy bullshit way to dismiss someone's opinion. It's the cuntiest way to handwave other posters away, right up there with "m'lady" and "fedora". I find it's typically used when a poster doesn't want their opinions or worldviews challenged, so they try to cut off any discussion by demeaning the other person.

I look at it like this: I think we can all agree that "the cake is a lie" makes us all feel uncomfortable and mildly embarrassed for the person who said it, right? You know, that "I love my hobby SO MUCH you all have to know this funny joke the GAMERS say!" sorta thing (just like being embarrassed for people over enthusiastic over really anything).
