What is going on on Giant Bomb right now?

I don't understand this. Why can't they hire white males? Why can't a place hire who they want? It's starting to feel a bit racist/prejudice, but eerily enough in this case it's against whites and males. It seems to be something I'm seeing more of in gaming threads on various sites lately. It's incredibly ironic and disheartening. The vitriol some people utter would not be condoned if people were saying this stuff about women or minorities, so it shouldn't be condoned at all.

If you are just trying to hire people of certain genders and races to fill a quota or tick a box off a checklist, you are doing it wrong. If they placed an ad saying they were looking for a "female journalist" or "black journalist", that would be considered racist/sexist to me. Why exclude anyone? Just hire the person you feel is best for the job. And they obviously did that.

Is it just me, or do these discussions happen far more often in the video game industry than in other industries?

If this is true, I wonder if it's because of the rampant hostility that these discussions are met with whenever they're brought up. I know in sports for example, equality is often brought up, but rarely fiercely debated to the same degree.

The videogame industry/enthusiast community skews younger than a lot of other groups out there today, thus it's more liberal, thus social issues get brought up more.

The thing is how do you "clean up" the community? The community is made up of people. You can't regulate what those people like or what those people think.

You can just ban the assholes and move on.

Exactly. It's important to nip it in the bud or it will just become more rampant as time goes on and that one asshole becomes multiple assholes till finally you have an IGN comment section. Maybe they need some more moderators I don't know, but they really don't seem to have a problem with some of them running rampant.

Not really, it's just more vocal because you're more active in this industry and it has a much larger presence on social media.

Sports is clear-cut, you can't argue biology.

What is the point of the term though? It's unnecessary. The term 'trans' literally means 'opposite'. That means there is an implied alternate. Why is it necessary to define it if it's known? Just reeks of Tumblr.

Cis and Trans are associated terms in Chemistry. They refer to the location of certain molecules in isomer structures. The terms are complementary and equivalent to the homo/hetero pairing

He's posting Youtube comments, but it's obvious she's talking about the GB community.

But it's sadly true though, the GB community can truly be a hateful place, and the shit today just kind of proves that, regardless of the intelligence of the discourse that sometimes emerges from people like Patrick, the culture of the site will rise up like a giant fecal hellbeast and envelop it.

For real, if the GB staff had done more in the early days when Leigh joined them (multiple times) to curb the fucking nonsense that people bombarded her with, then maybe today their worst members would be gone already.

They are banning people on their Forums and offending threads are getting closed.

They can't moderate twitter or reddit.

Leigh Alexander made an absolute ass out of herself when given forum via Giant Bomb, and now openly criticizes the staff?

I don't like that.

As for the other stuff, hire who's qualified; gender and race has nothing to do with who you are as person and what you can offer to the site.

I think that's pretty simple really.

Why is gaming the battleground for this sort of stupidity? Anytime you hire a man you have to justify yourself now?

I imagine it was a CBS requirement.

Honestly, the smart thing on Giantbomb's side if Rycket and the other guy were going to be the ones picked was to simply post the job, but make no Twitter posts about it, answer no questions on Tumblr about it, or talk about it on the podcast. Just post the job, let the time expire, than hire Rycket.

By making it so public, it actually looked like an "open" job.

Why bother posting the jobs to the public then? Just hire your good friend privately.

They probably can't under the big corporate umbrella of CBS. I have a friend who worked at a company that employed many thousands and a different department wanted him. But he couldn't just move like that as he was considered a new hire for that type of move and rules dictated the job must be posted and at least three applicants considered.

It looks to me, scanning all the quotes people are posting, that she's not once criticized the staff, but is instead criticizing the community of the site, and specifically the section of the community that can be described as a "bro-hole."

Best for the gb crew to ignore it and let it burnout. Giving it attention only emboldens trolls.

Don't feed the trolls is broken conventional wisdom. It almost never actually works. As a method for getting people to behave themselves, it's terrible. As a method for making yourself feel better about inaction as a means to feel self-satisfied, it's great.

As much as I'd like to condemn "go fuck yourself" as an inappropriate comment, it's obvious that Samantha was being harassed by sexists all day, and the guy who tweeted that question to her was actually tweeting a bunch of openly bigoted garbage and has an avatar of Macklemore in a stereotypical Jew outfit.

So yeah, nice job twisted a harassed person shouting at a bigot into "angry feminist is just as bad."
But that would go against the anti-PC narrative.

I agree with this. But I don't think we'll ever know the full story. It's possible that Dan and Jason weren't a 100 percent lock and the position had to be filled by the end of the quarter, which for CBSi was apparently yesterday.

My thoughts exactly....it seems these days it's just fine and dandy to be racist/sexist as long as it's against white men. Can you imagine the uproar if there was this kind of reaction to GB hiring 2 black dudes? Sadly these types of arguments on the internet have become a running joke, where no serious discussion can possibly take place.

People should be hired based on them being the right person for the job. If your idea of equality/diversity is to in turn exclude white-men who might be more qualified just for diversities sake then I hope to god you're never in a position of power.

I doubt they had them locked down, i'm sure that if they knew they had to post the jobs publicly they wouldn't have promised the positions to anyone before they got the chance to look at the people applying in case someone amazing came along. At least that's how i would have handled it.

I used sports as an example because it's an industry that I'm very active in (more so than video games).

As for the social media point...huh? Sports have a much larger presence on social media than gaming, and every other form of media for that matter.
I guess u missed the Donald sterling saga, the lack of black owner, coaches in an environment dominated by blacks (NBA, NFL).

I'm not surprised. I honestly cannot stand people from Twitter/Tumblr. Provides everyone a soapbox, usually leads to echo chambers, circle jerks etc.

Giant Bomb can hire who they want. Then again, they can't complain about lack of diversity, equal representation and then only hire white guys without being called out on it. People can have to right to be upset. I think these kinds of issues should remain civil, it helps if people have honest discussions about these things.

What the fuck is wrong with people? This is an enthusiast press position, not some federal job where affirmative action applies.

Don't know, this sounds like criticism of the staff. And this tweet was deleted, which shows she knows it was in bad taste.

Jesus christ, I have no respect for this woman.

I mean, outside of the incendiary language, it's not really that extreme a position. She's hateful toward institutional systems of oppression and uses intentionally loaded phrasing to express that.

i hate men doesn’t mean i hate you. it means i hate your position in this world. it means i’m not obligated to like you. it means i don’t have to talk to you if i don’t want to. it means i get to have my space and i don’t have to dance for you, smile at you, or soothe you.

She deleted another tweet that wasn't very complimentary of the work GB does.

Jesus Christ...

That's some Mein Kampf-level of shit right there. Well maybe not, but it's still pretty ridiculous. Provides perfect framing for a "go fuck yourself" comment.

I regularly consume Giant Bomb content, but never read the comments or participate in their forums. My only exposure to the community is the threads that pop up here on GAF and most people seem decent enough. It's unfortunate if there really is a lot of hate over there.
