What is going on with the Wii Virtual Console on Wii U?

I'm honestly surprised anyone is buying WiiU VC titles. With Nintendo still not having a good system to transfer that stuff between consoles via a consistent, shared account, and with the death of the WiiU imminent, it seems silly to invest in much of anything.

This is coming from a bitter ex Wii owner who lost hundreds of dollars in VC titles due to a robbery years ago, though.

The Nintendo ID still saves the purchases, and I think most signs point to VC transferring other to the next generation, at least first party wise, so I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Honestly I buy a lot of Wii U VC games, but I don't have a lot of faith that Nintendo will allow a free transfer. I really want it to happen though.

The Wii games on Wii U thing is very odd to me, since they aren't even emulated. It seems like they could just spit them out regularly or in batch.

Yeah it doesn't seem like something that would take very much effort or even cost them huge amounts of money more than they would get from many of us that that would buy these titles and give them money. I just can't possibly understand how it's gotten this bad with NOA that they would just completely stop giving us Wii games when every other region is still getting them.

Like honestly I deal with alot of the things Nintendo does, but this is the one thing that really got to me and makes me feel like we as fans are doing something wrong or not doing enough for NOA to give a shit and we are getting punished in how releases are handled (Fatal Frame and Devils Third for instance, they were fine using the hell out of the games to promote their schedule, but as the games got closer to release they pretty much act like they don't even exist now). I'm sure I'm completely wrong and it's stupid to think that, but I can't honestly understand what reason they would have to not give us these.

What gets me is that the virtual console in some of the wii games.. or even wii games for that matter don't get HD treatment. At least progressive scan and widescreen would be nice.

Yeah I feel the same, even regarding the VC in general. On 3DS they have pretty much stopped too. They should really devote a team to VC.

I think it's pretty obvious at this point that Nintendo isn't interested in HD remasters. Wind Waker HD was a test for HD development for the Zelda team, an exception of sorts. I won't be surprised if we never see another HD remaster from them.

I have my completed Golden Sun saves just waiting to be transferred into TLA. Still nothing after a year.

Strange, looking it up, Golden Sun Lost Age has been released in EU VC, but neither has released in JP VC for GBA games. I mean it's crazy enough that those releases are so staggered too even though they are still coming out, I know many including myself have been waiting for Metroid Zero Mission for god knows how long now.

I know that SNES would have been a great addition to VC, I'm pretty content with just the Game Boy and Game Boy Color selection though, like having mostly handheld VC on my Handheld. I can understand why they never did GBA though, the ambassador releases were not good back when they came out and had this weird blur whenever you moved, plus no extra features or anything.

It's NoA, need I say more? A bunch of monkeys could do a better job running the show.

I hope NOA realizes this is not the way to treat fans. I just hope they aren't placing all their bets on NX next year and basically ignoring anything else til then, cause it may hurt them more in the long run, especially if they don't get a ton of new adopters who aren't already in the Nintendo ecosystem, because stuff like this is how you start to lose fans due to them not trusting you.

Yeah, that part is really strange, too. I kind of understand a few weeks or something, but the months long wait for some titles from EU to NA is so weird. Time as shown they'll come eventually, but there's nothing I can think of that would delay them so long.

At this point it seems like Nintendo is trying to figure out how to run everything on the Wii U hardware with a very small team. Once they got it running, they move to the next emulator. See DS, Wii - GBA is outsourced last I heard and maybe the next thing we'll see is the GCN one - with 10 games tops.

My guess is, that's all preparation for the NX. Maybe this time, the emulators are coded so that they can be moved more easily to the next console.

I'm guessing a big part of the hold up is how big they are. Prime Trilogy took up a huge chunk of my hard drive, they know they can only realistically sell so many, not everybody's going to want to delete stuff. And from a pure profit factor, selling N64 ROMs at $10 a pop is probably a much better deal for them in terms of bandwidth costs than selling multi-gig files. Even if they could bump the price back up, those games are probably more time in tensive in terms of testing.

That said, it is massively annoying the amount of stuff that's sitting on the Japanese side of the fence. PC Engine games, Final Fantasy VI, Zero Mission, so many things I'd download day one.

I would think most games wouldn't be that big and more like in the 1.5-4.5 gb range for each game, Prime Trilogy was like 8 or so due to it being 3 full games in 1. Kirby Return to Dreamland I believe was somewhere between 3 or 4 gbs. I really hope bandwith isn't the reason they aren't doing it though, that'd be terrible. Heck Galaxy 1 I think is like Galaxy 2 where the game is like 1-2 gbs, and not even that game has gone up :(

Believe it or not, Galaxy 1 is about twice the size of Galaxy 2, but only because of the 60 fps FMV that they use. Galaxy 2 doesn't have any FMV, which helped to keep it small.

I made a post asking the Nintendo Twitter account today about it, but I doubt I'll get an answer. Just hoping that maybe if they see someone bring it up maybe they might remember it exists or something?

NX is the future yo. Might or might not be the future we wanted depending on whatever choices they make with whatever it turns out to be but its where Nintendo is headed.

Step 1) NOA announces a new platform on virtual console
Step 2) NOA releases 2-3 games for that platform
Step 3) NOA abandons the platform they just put up there in favor of another new platform or nothing at all
Repeat steps 1-3 until NX

Where the fuck is Zero Mission?

NOA just seems lost at this point. They don't have any direction, and can't seem to connect with their audience on anything. The fans like Amiibos, NOA makes most of them impossible to get. We want zero mission and mother 3, and NOA just acts like they have better things to release. I really don't understand what they are thinking.

It's quite obvious that their focus has shifted to nx and the majority of big game announcements regarding the virtual console will be held back until that releases. Wii u simply isn't selling enough to warrant putting them all out now.

I'm sure we'll eventually get Zero Mission and Mother 3. It's only a matter of time.

But the elephant in the room... The 800 pound gorilla...

What is Nintendo gonna do about faithful Wii U owners? Will there be a reason to ever own a Wii U after NX?

Jeez I feel like some great games are gonna be stuck on a failed console that will be irrelevant whenever Nintendo shows us their up to date hardware.

There's gotta be some way to get these type of questions directly to the heads. Has anybody ever asked Reggie about the process of VC, eShop, and general releases through NOA? What about Iwata? NCL?

Although the biggest wonder is, are interviewers even allowed to ask?
