What is Rare doing

I totally get that Microsoft has them working on a new Kinect Sports, but wasn't there talk of 3 new Rare titles? I mean, at the 360's launch they had Kameo and Perfect Dark. They're not even making Killer Instinct. I fully expected a new Banjo or even a racing game.

MS said they have more games to announce at Gamescom, so perhaps we'll find out then.

They've had a massive recruitment drive over the past two years, so they're clearly cooking up something beyond Kinect Sports.

They're probably finding suitable devs to work on previous franchises. Only because they don't have faith in themselves to develop anything except kinect games.

Banjo or Perfect Dark is what I want.

We'll probably get Viva Pinata 3 or something

Which I totally would love though

Rare is praying they graduate from Kinect Sports/F2P Academy and get to play with the big boys. Don't be surprised if the principal holds them back another year, though.

Killer Instinct was nearly 20 years ago. Of course the same team isn't there anymore, hence it makes more sense to outsource it to a team that can do a good job at reviving the franchise.

I'd rather MS do that than just waste Rare's wealth of IP instead by leaving it dormant. I just wish we'd seen Banjo go to Insomniac's old Ratchet team.

Between Rare and Lionhead we've got a Fable HD port and a new Kinect Sports....

That UK games industry totally killing it.

Rare needs to continue the approach they've started with KI. Give their IPs to someone who's much more competent/MS approves. Like, a Perfect Dark game developed by Crytek UK could be very possible, right?

This is what I am thinking to.

Even if it is just Kinect Sports Rivals, the game sounds quiet ambitious if everything in the fact sheet comes to fruition.

Of course, I would love nothing more than a new Banjo or Perfect Dark. Also some new IP would be amazing!

Crytek, no. Epic, yes.

and speaking of that, where was Epic?

What have they been doing for years? They're just a name propped up by nostalgia at this point, an empty shell. They didn't even do most of Kinect Sports 2 nor are they leading KI3. Put them out of your hearts, all of the people that made Rare rare are long gone.

Funny I found this in an early Nintendo Power

Rare is doing nothing, they don´t have the right to decide what to do, the op title should be: What is Microsoft doing with Rare?

What is crazy is the water racing game kind of coming true. Kinect Sports Rivals has the wake racing activity.

The "realistic" water physics rumor and how the avatars in the game are scanned from the players directly with Kinect makes me think it will be a little less casual than previous Kinect Sports games.

Rare no longer exists. Their reanimated corpse is just being jerked around a bit.

I guess this is what all the racing devs at Rare has been working on?

They need to make Kameo 2 and Viva Piniata with tablet support

Kameo was seriously one of my favorite games of all time on360, such a fun underated game

PDZ
Kameo
Banjo
Viva Pinata

And none of this games sold well. So, blame yourself for not supporting Rare, forcing them to make highly profiting Kinect games.

Only Viva rated highly critically out of those.

Those were the horrible Shane "Resident Evil 5" Kim days, when MS thought they could oversee and direct a UK studio like Rare from the US. I blame that for running them in to the ground.

Phil Harrison's looking after them now on a more localised basis, I expect better things in the future, and not just Kinect games.

I'd rather see the current Rare make a name for themselves with new things instead of digging up old franchises. They've yet to find any traction under MS beyond viva piñata and kinect mini games. Just digging up old franchises is cheap nostalgia, as a lot of the people that made their classic games special are gone, stuff like conker and banjo kazooie won't be the same. Nuts and Bolts even mocked the fans that were eagerly waiting for a new platforming game in the first 5 minutes.

They are on Skype giving a random developer instructions how to make Killer Instinct. The rest is working on Kinect Sports probably.

Although there was a reveal, I really wanted to see Black Tusk Studio's new IP.
I also wanted to see something from Lionhead Studios.

Obviously, The Last Guardian for PS and Naughty Dog's new game/IP as well.

Sounds like you're saying that I should feel bad for not supporting a developer with mediocre/bad output. It's good I don't.
What? None of the 4 games he listed are even close to mediocre or bad. Even critically all four of those games got above average reviews.

Would love to learn they are making another Viva Pinata (more like Animal Crossing; third-person RPG like) and a new R.C. Pro AM (would love an extreme track, powerup, and weapons racer). Then again, based on what's happening with Killer Insinct, I'd be fine with MS letting other talent handle those IPs while Rare gets their feet back under them.

Harrison did say they are being left off the leash, so maybe it will be a while before we see anything.

No way Kinect Sports is the only game they're making. I'm thinking a new racer, or an FPS will be revealed at Gamescom.

Viva Pinata was great at all aspects, too bad franchise didn't catch up with auditory.
PDZ was mediocre, I admit it.
Kameo was not on the next-gen standards (even early one), but mostly because of very long developing cycle. I will give it second shot 100%.
And Banjo, it is different, but not bad by any means, just not your typical platformer. But if they do it standard way, you are surely will be blown up by it greatness.
