What is Samus' best suit from the Metroid series?

Justin Bailey NES Samus. Miss the green hair.

The Light Suit is damn sexy and the Varia Suit is a classic.
(the Other M one is probably the best 3D version of that).

Out of the not-so-good ones, the Dark Suit is pretty ugly (though I
suppose it kinda is supposed to be) and the Fusion suit just looks like
a cheap tokusatsu costume.

As far as her Zero Suit goes, the one in Brawl is pretty respectable,
while Other M and Smash 4 are just awful with ridiculous sex doll
proportions.

y metroid can't turn head?

Well...that certainly explains Prime's controls

The color of the Light Suit doesn't fit Samus to me and it looks too "Spidery." I understand why people like it though, it does emit an aura of badassery and is unique looking compared to her other suits.

Well it IS part Luminoth design, and they are insectoid. I loved how the Echos suits seemed to fit their respective worlds, most other games don't really do that except the corrupted PED suit. The Phazon Suit is badass but I mean...what's that got to do with Phazon? It's not blue, it's not crystalline, if anything Dark Samus looks more like something I'd call a Phazon Suit (which makes sense since she basically is phazon).

Light suit is great but i was always annoyed by the spike knees. They dont go with the rest of the round design at all.

Ima have to say the Prime varia suits for the win. Also gravity and phazon suits kinda count as the varia suit still as they are just retextures of the varia suit and not a significant change otherwise.

I don't know what it is, but I've always liked the dark suit from Metroid Prime 2. I actually like the light suit less. Metroid Prime's phazon suit is my favorite, though.

What I really like about the dark suit is that it has a steampunk vibe without going overboard, like... almost anything steampunk in videogames.

A lot of really good posts here, and in my opinion, not a lot of wrong answers. There are a lot of fantastic designs, and I can see why people would like many of them. I want a new Metroid so much!

As for people saying the Zero Suit... Come on. Just stop.

If it makes you feel better, I actively dislike how the Light Suit looks. It's honestly ugly to me and is near the bottom of all the suits along with with the Dark Suit.

I really didn't think it was all that special until I saw the F4F version.

It's huuuuge. Wish it was around half the size (and half the price) but it is what it is.

Yes and then I saw it's price tag :(

It costs more than a Wii U >.>

For a fun change of topic, the ugliest Metroid suit by far is the Fusion Varia Suit, which looks like a clown vomited on Samus after eating Italian food. It's not visible in a still sprite, but in Fusion the standing animation makes it look like Samus is covered in yellow and red goop, which makes it look even uglier.

Oh my god wat

I love her Metroid 2 look personally.

Prime had some great suits too.

On the other hand, I think her Zero Suit is her worst. Kinda surprised so many people are saying it. Though I guess it's not hard to see why. >.>

Oh my, while I don't need the lower area of the suit to start exploring a different cavern all together so to speak I will say that I've always liked this look in something of a vintage way complete with odd yet eye catching colour choices regardless of how less practical it is than even the zero suit.

I had forgotten that the Prime 1 Gravity suit was Indigo, much better than the purple in Super.
For some reason until this post I still tended to think of it as just lighter purple despite the fact that Indigo is right on point.
I feel oddly shamed by this revelation.

Without the suit, what are Samus powers? I'm not that into Metroid, but I would like to know.

In before "sex appeal".

Samus is part bird, so she has incredible flexibility and lightness and higher than human athletic ability. She also has a stun blaster/grapple whip side arm she carries on her. She's also highly observant and intelligent.

Physical strength, agility and combat training from the Chozo and ability to interface with their artefacts, and an extremely calm demeanor (ie not freaking the fuck out in a room full of Metroids as most reasonable people would).

People complaining that Other M was good because it portrayed Samus as something other than a cold blooded killer are wrong because that's what she fucking is.

Thanks guys. Part bird? Never knew that, wow.

The very first manual talked about how she was infused with chozo "blood".

With DNA getting popular, canon was changed for she being infused with chozo "DNA".

The suits are all related to ancient technology from the chozo and races related to them, so it's not like any human could step into a suit and gain superpowers, they wouldn't be able to even move.

Thanks!

For traditional suits, it's definitely Gravity in any context - probably Prime by a nose. Fusion Suit (in the traditional blue) has probably surpassed it, though, by now. Thought it was ugly originally, but it's got an interesting feel to it; I prefer the sort of organic look to the more mechanical.

And I do love Justin Bailey, much more so than the Zero Suit. I appreciate her inclusion in Project M - it's perfectly 80s.

When her colony was attacked by the space pirates and her parents killed by Ridley, the Chozo, a race of talking space birds, took her under their wings (literally), and infused her with their DNA and trained her in their advanced space combat (and gave her, her suit)

It's not like her parents were half birds or something, but she has DNA from bird like aliens.

Bulky and agile is a much scarier combination.

She can still wall jump.

That's about it. Her combat abilities in the games are based on the power suit, which makes sense because the games are about collecting power-ups for said suit. Having Samus be physically powerful without the suit misses the entire thrust of the series.

And before someone says "but Samus should be super badass without the suit!", she is a badass without it, she's just not super powerful, as demonstrated in Zero Mission. The suit is her weapon, and obviously she shouldn't be as effective while unarmed.

I understand now.

While the Light Suit is one of the best suits, another one of my favorites has to be the simple Varia Suit from Prime 2/3.
I can't exactly point out why I like it more than the other variations of it, its still one of my favorites.

The good ol' Varia suit of Metroid Prime series. There have been subtle changes throughout games, but it gives me such great feelings of nostalgia.

It's so beautiful. Those big shoulders look so iconic, I love the proportions more than anything.
How I wish they used a Prime design and not the Other M Varia Suit in Smash 4 (and the Amiibo).
As much as I love the Light Suit, this one is too iconic for me not to place it at #1.

Bulk isn't relevant--the suit is powered and attached to her body, she doesn't (apparently) need to rely on her own muscles to move it and it gives no noticeable decrease in agility, especially given the screw attack and morph ball upgrades. Then there's the Gravity suit which counteracts pressure and other complications to movement in nonstandard enviornments.

If anything the slimline suits make no sense, because all that tech has to fit somewhere--whatever power source and all the mechanical muscles, plus a life support system and such. And, while a bit nonsensical even for sci fi, the giant spaulders of the Varia suit are supposed to have heat sinks to protect from extreme temperatures (this makes no sense because the difficulty is then in removing the heat not localizing it).

Of course she's not powerful without the suit. But given she's a one-human-army in the suit, that doesn't automatically turn her into a wimp without it.

She can't win against space pirates in a fair fight without the suit (in Zero Mission you have to resort to tricking them into shooting each other). She's badass, agile, and certainly stronger than a normal human, but the suit gives her power. Which is how it should be, because this is a game series about obtaining power-ups for the suit to become stronger.
