What is the best looking non-pixel-based 2D game?

Skullgirls, baby.

Ori looks amazing.

I thought Transistor looked better in select screenshots.. but it looked cookie cutter while playing.. didn't help that it had this weird flash-game feel to a lot of it.

But toss my vote toward Rayman Legends and Origins. Though I dig the art style of Ori considerably more so.

Dragon's Crown despite some questionable art choices was beautiful as well.

Both Trine games looked great, just hated playing them.

I remember liking that new 2d bloodrayne game. Looks better in motion than in still pictures though.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse looks amazing, but I don't have it or have any good shots of it. Google images isn't helping me, and even Nintendo's very own press images from E3 last year are surprisingly compressed =( It looks amazing, though, it really does!

This is a good thread with many good examples already. If I weren't on my phone, I'd post Patapon 2 and Escape Plan.

If I were truly forced to pick only one, it'd probably be Muramasa Rebirth, but there are so many beautiful 2D games.

this is something im constantly trying to figure out. i HATE 2d pixel gamesart styles. there are a couple that succeed despite it but by and large, it'll turn me off right away. my favs so far have been Dust and Trine. and wow that trine2 screen from above looks amazing. bastion was pretty good. braid was nice. i really liked the way shank was done but a large part of that was the fluidity of the animations more than the art style.

Have you seen Rain World? Pixel art but has some really fluid smooth animations

OP just put a big grin on my face. I saw Rayman Origins and thought "Oh come on! It's beautful but Legends is a straight upgrade!" Then I saw your best looking =D

Rayman Legends looks stunning. It is concept art come to life. In 3D it is just, breahtaking. Incredible. A serious tide change for me. I really, really love it and the looks play a huge part.

Ubiart engine is crazy great. I love the look of everything that comes out of it.

It does have that great pixel art look, but I'm fairly certain at least the animated models are polygons. Think of something like Fez where it has the pixel art look but is all 3D.

Valiant Hearts deserves mention, too, even though it has admittedly a simpler style. UbiArt is just a beast engine.

You guys can feel free to add your own images from some of the games that have already been listed, too. I just love seeing these beautiful 2D games.

having just replayed Rayman Legends on the Xbox One thanks to GwG and since I am currently Playing Ori and the Blind Forest my opinion is that Rayman looks best in screenshots but Ori is the winner in motion.

Kind of against the grain of all these others, but I really, really love the art style of the Rhythm Heaven games.

Skullgirls comes immediately to mind since it animates as good as it looks (all hand drawn rather than roto-scoping or 3D renders)

CAVE's HiDef ports on the 360 look very good for a shmup, although it's better to watch gameplay vids since all of the pictures are unflattering.

Can't believe it took so long for Valiant Hearts, Muramasa and Dragon's Crown to be posted. Incredible looking games, all.

And yes I also prefer this style of 2D over the retro pixelly stuff, though some retro graphics still look good.

What about Banner Saga? I haven't played it but it looks cool:

definitely not the best, but i feel Ghost Trick deserves to be mentioned among the most spectacular looking 2D games

Ori look too DeviantArt for me...

Huh?

Anyway, Limbo is my favorite 2D aesthetic that's not done in pixel art. Looks like a Bergman film. Also up there are Rayman Legends, The Banner Saga and Braid, even though the latter is starting to show its age.

Isn't Valdis Story hand drawn?

Can Castle Crashers count too, as it looks more hand drawn and less pixelized.

Definitely want to make a nod to all of the awesome Vanillaware mentions.
