What is the best Nintendo console of all time?

Not counting handhelds:

SNES >> GameCube >> NES >> N64 >>>>>>>>>>>>> wii

Although simply having Metal Arms on GameCube means it has my heart.

I agree with those saying wii was a serious misstep. It lost me totally. wiiU looks to do the same so far.

Wii disappointed me big time.
Gamecube was a nice cute console with some good games.
N64, Rare and EAD singlehanded saved this console, with some of the best games ever made (zelda OOT, majora's mask, goldeneye, perfect dark). Its my personal favorite.
Snes might be better but the n64 was my first console so it wins on nostalgia.

So i think then

n64>snes>gamecube>nes>wii

NES.

I know the SNES is more popular, especially in the US, but I just can't muster up any enthusiasm for the game catalogue.

Also something you can't say for any PlayStation consoles! :3

this is really quite true. looking at my PS2 library, not many of the games are first party ones, mostly just third party.

i know how you feel. i don't really care for many of Nintendo's first party games from this gen (outside of Super Metroid). and i like the third party titles better for Genesis/Mega Drive.

SNES without a doubt, foo

I'd rank em as

1. SNES
2. Wii
3. NES
4. GC
5. N64

The wii really did have some crazy amazing games imo.
About the same for me, although NES and GC are extremely close, pretty much tied.

Snes - 2D 16 Bit graphics are timeless !!!

Mario Kart 64
Pilotwings 64
Smash Bros.
Starfox 64
Super Mario 64
Waverace 64

SNES by far, in my eyes. It covers the bases of every genre I care about beautifully.

I think a lot of people would say NES if that were the case.

Nintendo's first party efforts are way better on Wii than the Gamecube. Wii just didn't have any real third party support, where as Gamecube got some via money hats, and multi-platform releases.

I have a very special place in my heart for the GameCube but looking at it objectively it has to be the Wii. You can play pretty much all the big NES/SNES/N64/MegaDrive/etc. titles with the Virtual Console and all GameCube games.

On top of that it gives you 3 incredible Mario platform games, (soon) 2 big different Zelda titles, Donkey Kong Country, all the Metroid Prime's, Resident Evil 4 with better controls, a whole range of first party content like Excite Truck, Punch Out and more. It has a wide variety of controllers and control schemes as well.

i dunno, i think the average gaffer is of the age where they would have played the snes/n64 as a child.

In what dimension is the Gamecube better than N64? I mean come on now. N64 had the better Zelda game. The better Mario game. It had Goldeneye and it also had an awesome Star Fox game.

Gamecube is dogshit in comparison.

Nintendo 64 and Gamecube.

Because i grew up with them. Basically anybody is just going to mention their first console they owned.

You're probably right, if that "games you played as a kid" thread is any indication, where people were listing games that are 10 years old or younger.

The wii was Nintendo taking a shit for profits IMO.

I'm not talking just first party. And virtual console doesn't count, or a PC would be the best Nintendo console of all time.

Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 have the biggest 'marks' on me growing up. It was a time when I could become really excited for a system. Nintendo 64 also introduced 4 player multiplayer as the norm, and gave me some excellent memories with friends with Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Bomberman, Goldeneye.. and there were plenty of great first player titles. Yes, even third party offerings.

But if you're asking 'best', Wii offers many of the best titles from previous generation on the Virtual Console, it had backwards compatibility with the Gamecube, it's one of the most easily exploited Homebrew scenes, and it has a long list of triple A titles released on it throughout its life.

You might think motion controls with the Wii took it in the wrong direction, and I agree that while titles (like DKCR) just use the controls for the sake of using it.. some, like Metroid Prime 3 / Resident Evil 4 / Wii Sports really excel because of the controls. Just like the DS, once developers learned that the controls were only optional, titles that could use it did, and those that didn't need it didn't force it.

So, I guess I'm saying the Wii, attempting to negate the nostalgia I feel for gaming two decades ago.

Seeing SM64 playing on one of those giant screens best buy used to have in the center of the store was incredible. It was mario, in 3D, just running around a giant grassy area and a castle but it blew my mind. I knew I had to have the 64 at that point. I wish they would make another game like that.

i was talking to someone, and they mentioned having a comment on their i-ninja let's play that said something along the lines of "this was the very first game i ever played as a kid."

so crazy. :/

man all this wii hate. Almost all complaints I've heard with the system boil down to

- Not HD = poop
- every game makes me waggle until my arms explode from their sockets

SNES. The games aged gracefully, and the library is immense.

How anyone can put the N64 at the top is beyond me. I mean, I have plenty of nostalgia for the system (I was 13 when Ocarina came out), but most of those games were grotesque experiments in 3D gameplay.

Virtual boy it was 3d before it was cool....ok not really game boy is probably my most played Nintendo concel so i'm gonna say game boy. allthought GCN was also great.

At the time - in terms of enthusiasm - probably Super Nintendo

I think the Wii is their best console to date, it prolonged the Gamecube library and introduced great new iterations of their franchises and some new experiences -- Virtual Console and WiiWare enabled experiences that weren't possibly on their other consoles. Back when it was fresh, the whole Mii thing was cool, the browser worked for most sites really well, and stuff like iPlayer in the UK etc was really welcome.

I've been ready for HD Nintendo for about 2 / 3 years now though, I can understand peoples' waning enthusiasm for the Wii, and even understand why people don't like it.

That doesn't explain Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2.

Two games don't change my opinion is the least.

Why? Shit tech for profits. The GameCube was at least as powerful as the xbox, and no where near the embarassment.

How did the Wii disappoint? Galaxy 1&2, twilight princess, both kirbys, NSMBw, DKCR, metroid prime 3, excite bots/truck, punchout, Mario kart, SSBB. I'm sure there's more but can't think of them.

Mind if I ask where you're from? Continent would be enough.

It'd probably be a tie between the GameBoy Pocket or the Gamecube for me.

The Gamecube brought consistently brought us something "different" from the other two companies - but it was still made and developed for "core" gamers.

Wind Waker
Pikimin
RE4
Metroid Prime
Eternal Darkness
Killer 7
Baten Kaitos
Animal Crossing
F-Zero GX
Viewtiful Joe
Rogue Leader
SSB Melee

Etc, etc, etc.

The Gamecube cost less than both the PS2 and Xbox, yet had just as good as graphics as the latter and much better than the former.

It had room for expansion, and gave us the GB Player and the modem which I used for 1000+ hours of Phantasy Star Online.

The controller was great.

The handle was useful.

The system was surprisingly portable, and had a very unique yet classy design.

The mother****ing wavebird!

The hardware was easy to develop for.

It still had Rare.

Silicon Knights was actually worth a damn.

Ninty was most willing to be adventures with their IPs - Star Fox Adventures, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, etc.

Just a great time to be a Nintendo fan.
That's great and all but 2 words.

Chrono Trigger.

Also

Super Metroid
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Kart
Super Punch-Out
Super Mario RPG
Zombies ate my neighbors
Kirby Super Star
TMNT: Turtles in Time
F-Zero
Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2
Legend of Zelda
Legend of Mana

Not to mention all the amazing Mega Man games, Final Fantasy games, Dragon Warrior games and boat loads more.

those aren't the only two and you know it. quit being disingenuous for the sake of your easily deflatable argument.

I never said they were the only two. Nintex seemed to suggest it. There is no way to deflate an opinion btw. You think what you like, and I'll do the same.

Gamecube. Metroid Prime 2 is my favorite Metroid, F-Zero GX my favorite in this series and I really like the two Zelda games released there. It also has Beyond Good and Evil. Spent more than 200 hours on Melee and love the Pikmin series. There's also Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

Overall, the Wii -- easily. You have all of the Wii exclusives like Super Mario Galaxy, Skyward Sword, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart Wii, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Then you have all of the Gamecube titles that can be played on it. Then the virtual console games, which is like the best from NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and others. Not to mention the Wiiware titles. You also have a lot of controller choices like the standard Wiimote + Nunchuck, Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro, and all of the Gamecube controllers.

It's also small, elegant, and quiet.

Online and 3rd party support. Nintendo's first party output it always top notch.

I have more to add:

Super Smash Bros Brawl
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
New Super Mario Bros
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Kirby's Return To Dreamland
Donkey Kong Country Returns
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

I mean, I loathe the Wii myself (see my first post in the thread), but Nintendo's first party output on the system was prolific, and frankly, nothing short of stellar.
