What is the general reaction to Windows 8?

I like it, it took some getting use to but It's a pretty good operating system and my biggest complaint is the missing start menu but that's at least corrected with a program.

I like it, with a start menu replacement.
Just hitting windows key to go into metro for train times app, news + sport, mail, calendar, is great.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with it, but the support for the new Metro interface is still very limited and by the default it's riddled with ads just like the XBox 360.This, and the removal of the start menu, isn't an issue for people who use keyboard shortcuts for most actions, but it's definitely confusing for the average user.

You can reach the shutdown menu by pressing Alt+F4 from the desktop or with Win+I from anywhere else.

You don't need shortcuts.

Right click the bottom left corner for control panel etc. Move your mose to top or bottom right corner and click settings to shutdown.

It's not that hard.

I still think it's odd how the world rejects the big visual start screen that is Metro (even on mouse and keyboard).

The world is not rejecting the new desktop screen. They are rejecting the idea that it is a start menu.

Before it came out you could have told me the new "start screen" was your desktop background, and I would have believed it. Full screen, check. Arrangeable icons, check. Putting a wallpaper on it, check. It's your desktop background, just upgraded to make it useful. And that's great.

But it isn't a start menu. Start menu does non-full-screen launching of programs and folders with jump lists for the most used programs, non-full-screen search (which can use references), shut down, compact listing of recently opened programs and documents, nested list just in case you need it, etc. It's simply a different set of functions.

Some start menu functions were disabled completely in Windows 8, others were relegated to annoying pop ups. Sorry, but those pop ups are just stupid design beyond belief on a desktop which has a keyboard and mouse.

The preference for the start button and classic start menu is utterly baffling to me.

Once people have developed familiarity and efficiency with a UI paradigm, it should only be changed if the new paradigm is significantly better. Otherwise the time and effort required to regain the same level of efficiency on the new UI are a pointlessly squandered cost.

I have no issues at all with it. New Gaming PC came with it installed.. works fine. Also have a Surface and it is super slick for that. The hate in my mind is just not justified at all.

The first few days with Windows 8 is like "Where's the stuff? How do I do this? Why did they take this away? I hate this!" but after a week you're used to it and it doesn't really matter anymore.

I mean, on Wii, I had a grid of icons too, and a pointer that works similar to a mouse. It worked great. Never once did I think, "you know what I'd rather use to launch a channel than this full screen grid of pictures? A little icon in the bottom left corner that I can click on and have a tiny text list of channels".

The preference for the start button and classic start menu is utterly baffling to me.
I don't want to get too bogged down in this, but I'll answer why I find them different.

When you launch a channel, you're making a big commitment. I'd be surprised if the average time spent in a channel is less than 20 minutes. These people are choosing to play a game, or watch some show on Netflix. Compare that to someone who opens the Windows Calculator for a quick check while browsing through a charity's financials in a PDF. Or opening up KeePass because they got to a webpage where they needed a password.

Essentially, full-screen transitions are justified when multi-tasking is impossible or unnecessary. I do stuff like that calc thing without even looking at the start menu... I'm still reading as I open it. That just doesn't apply to Wii applications.
