What is the greatest single Star Trek work?

DS9:
Duet
The Wire
Improbable Cause
The Die Is Cast
The Visitor
Things Past
Soldiers of the Empire
The Magnificent Ferengi
Far Beyond the Stars
In the Pale Moonlight
The Changing Face of Evil

All awesome episodes. But I think the greatest thing based on Star Trek is First Contact.

Director's Cut of The Motion Picture.

Motion Picture is such a unique film in the Star Trek universe. I appreciate it for what it is and would consider it up there with the best works in the franchise. That said, Wrath of Khan is leagues better. While First Contact is good, the fact that every other Next Gen movie sucks ass makes it appear better than it really is.

Amok Time!!
City on the Edge of Forever
Spock's Brain (seriously, I love this episode)
Best of Both Worlds
Chain of Command

While perhaps not the absolute best Trek, if only because they rely heavily on familiarity with the series and wouldn't be nearly as good out of context, I've got to pimp two terrific Trek novels, both by the late John M. Ford: The Final Reflection and How Much For Just The Planet?

The Wrath of Fnord

you always pimp these

i'm not a huge trek fan, but i trust your judgement.

i'll buy these now

The Savage Curtain.

Kirk, Spock, and Abraham Lincoln (plus Surak) fight Genghis Khan and three other really bad guys whose names escape me while an alien rock watches.

"Help me, Spock!"

Does anyone think that the upcoming Star Trek movie will have a chance at being a "best of"?

I'm kinda hoping they off Kirk and use Pike as the lead for the series.

WTF?

WHAT THE FUCK!!!

Pike can sit in his remote control washing machine and die!

Ent:
All Good Things
Tommorrow's Enterprise

DS9:
In the Pale Moonlight
Inter Arma Einem Silent Legis
The Siege of AR-155 (or something)

Enterprise:
Regeneration
Twilight
Azeti Prime
Damage

Mov:
First Contact

...all get my nominations. In the Pale Moonlight takes the Grand Prize though.

"So... I lied. I cheated. I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men. I am an accessory to murder. But the most damning thing of all... I think I can live with it. And if I had to do it all over again, I would. Garak was right about one thing, a guilty conscience is a small price to pay for the safety of the Alpha Quadrant. So I will learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it... Computer, erase that entire personal log."
Perfectly Written.

lol any good ones from Enterprise?

There was one episode that really hit me, and IMO, it is one of the BEST Star Trek episodes ever as it brings to light the moral, and ethical questions regarding freedom of will to light.

The episode involved an alien species with 3 sexes: Male, female, and a slave race of 3rd sex which acts as a carrier for the child or something. Tripp teachers her/him to read and what follows is one of the most gripping episodes of Star Trek ever.

Two pages now and no love for The Undiscovered Country? That's my favorite of the movies- I think it's more entertaining than Khan.

But like so many others, my vote for the best single work is TNG's The Inner Light.

You guys are making me want to watch some Star Trek real soon...

That's exactly what I'm about to do right now :D

I just realized I've only seen 'Wrath of Khan' like twice. once in the 80s and once in the 90s.

I need to see it again.

I can not believe no one has mentioned: Balance of Terror

The original series doesn't get enough credit. This episode had a great performance from Shatner, and featured an awesome submarine-style battle/chess match between Kirk and the Romulan commander. There are other great, really political episodes of TOS, but I like BOT the most. Also DS9 has more amazing episodes of Star Trek than any other series, so it's hard to pick one: Duet, Rocks and Shoals, In the Pale Moonlight, ect.

I completely forgot about Balance of Terror. I'm glad you mentioned it. One of my favorite episodes of TOS.

A lot of good mentions so far. I like saying "In the Pale Moonlight" for the irony that if Gene Rodenbery could delete any 1 episode of Star Trek, I think it would be that one.

While not my tops, a few that have not been mentioned that I think deserve a nod.

TOS: "Mirror Mirror"

Trek-MirrorMirror32.jpeg

A transported accident causes Kirk, and friends to beam into an alternate dimension where the Federation is a dominating empire (And Spock has a Goatee!). Kirk's "We learned something today" speech corrupts the Empire and Humans are force into slave labor by the people they once oppressed. This leads to some awesome episodes of DS9.

Voyager: "Timeless"

When Ensign Kim (Yes, a good episode about Kim, can you believe it?) figures out a shortcut home, Voyager tries it. An unexpected error causes only Kim and Chakotay to get home, while the rest of the crew dies when Voyager crash lands on a planet. 15 years later, Kim and Chakotay find the ruins of Voygaer and attempt to change history and save the crew.

Gems like that are the reason I endured Voyager. Despite all the lame Holodec throw-aways, there were some really good episodes buried in all the fluff.

Measure of a Man hands down, saw it when I was little never really thought about it. Saw it again last year in one of my Law classes, amazing episode on many levels.

You know...that one episode of TNG where the enterprise keeps blowing up. That was pretty cool.

I think the three episode arc: The Best of Both Worlds + the next ep where Picard goes back home is pretty much the best stuff out there.

Which Star Trek TNG episode were they on the holodeck, and it was like a pirate ship, or a Titanic-like ship, or something. I remember that episode the most. Which is not very well, but the most of any of them.

TOS Episode: The City on the Edge of Forever
TOS Movie: The Undiscovered Country

TNG Episode: The Measure of a Man
TNG Movie: First Contact

I had a great time with Mirror, Mirror..... As well as Space Seed. The great thing about Star Trek in those days was that it hadn't been dumbed down into a kind of by-the-numbers humanism.... it wasn't "nice".

Kahn really does seduce and control some hottie sexpot from the Enterprise. The evil Spock and Kirk are bad-ass, but also unabashed evil. Kinda scary. Contrast that to the Mirror episodes of DS9 which used the mirror device as an excuse to have the main characters joke around.

I would also give a nod to the last 5 seasons of DS9 in total... because while I love individual epsiodes, that's not really the main appeal to me... I really loved how the characters grew over time... and I liked that they were all good friends, while having distinct dark sides. I also got the impression that DS9 characters actually had sex lives ;) unlike the last couple series.

Trials and Tribble-ations is a great episode too! (Can you tell I love TOS? It's more of a rugged adventure show to me, like Indiana Jones or something, rather than the more idealistic sci-fi "geeks in space" of later shows)

EDIT: yes, Garak is the man.

I think 50% of TNG took place on a holodeck.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn
Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: The Next Generation:

EP. 1..... I forgot the name of the episode where Jean Luc Picard fell unconcious when the probe activated and he lives in another man's life.

EP. 2..... Chain in Command part 1 & 2 (There are 4 LIGHTS!!!)

And whole bunch of others i can't remember.

I initially thought the title read "what is thegreatest single Star Trek WORD", to which I was about to post, "KAHHHHHHHHN!"
