What is the greatest zombie movie ever?

Day of The Dead never gets any respect in these lists. It's the best of the OG trilogy IMO, and possibly the best zombie movie ever. So grim and tense. Also contains one of the best zombie apocalypse monologues ever and a ton of great scenes + great effects.

I know everyone loves Dawn for the mall, but search your hearts. Day of The Dead is so mean.

Not a connoisseur of the genre, but I really liked 28 Weeks Later too.

The opening was awesome, I liked how they showed the resettling and aftermath of the first outbreak and then the relapse. And I loved that night vision in the metro scene, was fucking intense.

Day of the Dead was awesome but I really wish Romero had the budget to show his true vision of what it was meant to be. I remember reading something that said it was supposed to be the Gone with the Wind of zombie movies.

To expand:

For actual horror: NOTLD Remake.

Runner up: OG Dawn of the Dead 3rd: Day of the Dead

Funny: Zombieland.

Runner up: Shaun

A few people on here have mentioned the Dawn remake, I have 2 issues with this film.

One: is Fast Zombies. No thanks. Makes it a completely different type of horror film. (See also 28 days later). Fast zombies are shock value and RARR Monsters! Slow is the creeping unwavering march of death

Two: Zombies that pause for dramatic effect. The scene on the stairs... horrible.

Dawn Remake was a fun film (also 28 days) and I enjoyed it, but no not better than other zombie films.

As for Return of, the zombies were intelligent and could talk. It added for a sort of humor. And the horror was more gross than anything (IE Tarman).

For straight-up classic zombies, I am partial to the Night of the Living Dead 1990 remake.

For fun zombies, it's gotta be Return of the Living Dead.

28 Days Later scared the crap out of me as a kid, as the opening scenes in London were all the places I'd hang around and they were never empty. There's something seriously unsettling about that, but because of that it probably becomes my favourite "Zombie" movie.

Shaun of the Dead got me over my zombie fears, and introduced me to the world of Simon Pegg so it's probably what you'd consider to be be my favourite "actual zombie" film.

The first REC gets an honourable mention too, purely because it's absolutely incredible. Not usually one for those "found footage" types of film, but it sets the tone and the pace of the film spectacularly well.

We've had some fantastic zombie movies over the years, haven't we?

I have to go with Shaun of the Dead, personally.

For my serious pick, though... probably 28 Days Later.

Day is really up there for me, and criminally overlooked. And those gore fx. Guess people really get put off by almost every character being genuinely unlikeable. Great flick though and that opening is great.

Zombieland was pure fun. And Shaun of the Dead was also great but I did not expect feels from that movie but it happened hahaha. Not a movie but Highschool of the Dead is my favorite zombie related media ever, it has lots of fan service but the story and vibe is so good IMO.

its my favorite of the trilogy, but its definitely an acquired taste. Watching Dawn first, which is a much less mean movie and a bit more action packed, I hated Day the first time I saw it. It definitely was not what I was expecting. On repeat viewings though with my expectations for the tone of the film in check it quickly became my favorite of the trilogy. Its one of those movies I keep waiting for it to find its audience and become more widely accepted.

For me it's hard to chose a favorite but my list goes:

Both Dawn of the Dead Films
The Night of the Living Dead
Shaun of the Dead
Zombieland

For whatever reason I just could not get into the 28 Films. =|

Does your "greatest zombie movie ever" have John Goodwin in it? Checkmate.

That's a perfect way of putting it: Day is a mean flick. Despairing and hopeless. Ugly. Certainly didn't jibe with other big releases that year--just checked and it was released on the same day as Back to the Future. Reminds a little of how The Thing was overlooked/panned in what, '82?, with some of the same gripes about tone. Hope Day gets the respect it deserves eventually.

No, just no.

The original Dawn of the Dead is the best ever made, followed by Night of the Living Dead and lastly Day of the Dead.

Edit: can't belive how many people are saying the remake. I wish a real zombie apocalypse happened, to wipe the slate clean.

Oh god, Day is fucking terrible, come on. I will give it to the first two.

Dawn remake has that shitty zombie baby nonsense that could have been good but was awful. Shaun and Zombieland rock for comedy, but the original Night is it for me, followed by original Dawn. 28DL is scary and well acted and it's my favorite contemporary.

Sorry for terrible errors. I'm on my phone in my mom's hospital room and everyone should feel sorry for me and my awful edits and inability to finish a sentence.

Dawn is my favorite but Day is very very close. The jaw dropping intro is second to none, very dark and depressing film.

It's probably a tie between Night of The Living Dead and Dawn of The Dead. I love both movies enough to own at least 2 copies of each on every physical media with probably the japanese laser disc being my favorite.

I am a bit biased towards both since they were the first horror films i saw as a kid (i believe i was 9) completely fell in love with the horror genre, romero and zombies. Became fascinated with practical effects and the work of asshole saivini.

Still, even nostalgia and bias aside Night of The Living Dead still holds up and is still one of the greatest horror films.

1. Shaun of the Dead
2. Night of the Living Dead ('68)
3. Dawn of the Dead ('78)
4. Return of the Living Dead
5. 28 Days Later
6. Brain Dead
7. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
8. Day of the Dead
9. Paranorman
10. Zombie

Easy list.

Day is also way up there for me. Far more coherent and better edited than Dawn in my opinion. I'm also a fan of the gritty and bleak atmosphere throughout. Superb soundtrack. I think it's aged the best of his original trilogy too. And it's still the most rewatchable in terms of just pacing, acting and interesting setting.

My top 3 picks:

Day of the Dead
Return of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead (Remake)
