What is the point of Gamestop anymore?

The selection for me. Between BestBuy, Target, and Walmart, they have maybe 50% of the PS4 and Wii U games any local Gamestop does. And like 25% of the Vita games.

I know of two Gamestops, a mile apart from each other. Why? I have no idea.

I've got 3, at one point when EB games was still around, it still competed with those 3, basically EB in mall, 1 gs across the street, another across that street, and another almost less than half a mile down, while still near the mall area. and a ma and pa shop 3 miles down the street.

I just can't understand why they wouldn't just consolidate it into one store. Is it more for advertising? Even then, it's a ridiculous.

Recently started taking them again, they don't even test them. You get 25$ if it's complete got all the cables and controller or 20$ if its incomplete.

I didn't know there were stores that would take new hardware back for full refund after being used.

All the big box retailers do.

Oh and they'll be selling old games again soon! Which I can't see Best Buy doing.

However, GameStop has no plans to sell these older games in-store, and effectively becomes another eBay/Amazon kind of online marketplace (the price list is right up there)... with the unfortunate added side-effecf of dealing with GameStop stickers to peel off of carts/cases.

I'll be sticking with my usual sources for buying retro.

I will grab games from them that are hard or impossible to find elsewhere, but I am in Canada so we don't have many options to begin with.

I wanted to get my wife Story of Seasons for her New 3ds, Bestbuy is usually my go to place but they didn't have any. Went to ebgames and they had 10 new sealed.

Everything has it's time and place, and well the guys there are always nice to everyone, I'd hate to wish their jobs and store away.

We've had enough job and retail loss as it is here this last year, it's rather depressing.

For me, the point of Gamestop is to find that niche deal.

Sometimes Gamestop has some nice deals on Atlus, Xseed, etc. Other times it has some sweet deals I can price match at Best Buy (ex., PM'd Drive Club at Best Buy for $20). I also traded in a PS3 and 360 I bought at Cowboom for around $190 for $350 credit towards a PS4 brand new.

While I hate Gamestop, it serves at least some purpose.

This is hilariously true; I was just in there today cause I had some gift cards to use and wanted a new DS4. But the whole time the clerk was on the phone and trying to conduct some sort of convo with the other end and ask me what I was looking for/check me out Eventually she hung up and apologized but it was really annoying and pointless.

I avoid Gamestop like the plague for the most part.
I used to work.there and got yelled at for not.picking up.the phone.

Something about customer service..which is.ironic since I'm.ignoring.the person in front of me. That guy asking why his 360 can't play sunset overdrive is more important than you though..

There are always people who are not tech-game savvy as yourself. I worked at one and besides the usual customer see would get lots of parents who stop by or leave their annoying kids for us to babysit. Besides a mom wants to buy a game for their son or daughter, she sees the giant words GAME STOP so of course she'll try. The worst is when the parents don't understand you cannot return open new games and get pissed off at me for it too bad I didn't care enough lol.

But GameStop is selling them the new game opened already so the person is returning it in the same condition they bought it.

I shop at GS some still but only in limited situations. Any new game is purchased from Best Buy w/ GCU. Off the top of my head here are the reasons I purchase an item from GS:

1. Select used games. If you are careful they do have some great prices on some used games. It's typically tough to find the ones I'm referring to and even more difficult to find them complete and in good condition. A savvy shopper can definitely find good deals though and fill out their collections. Examples: Afrika (PS3), Zack and Wiki (Wii), Klonoa (Wii), etc...
2. Niche games. They keep a decent selection of niche games. Sometimes its the only place near me that has them in stock. This also is true If I wait for a game to drop in price but it ends up going out of print. I'll check the GS online tracker to see if there are any near me. Then I can pick it up before it gets truly hard to find.
3. Exclusives. They do get a few exclusive games and/or exclusive Physical releases. Examples: Xenoblade (Wii), Tales of Hearts (Vita), etc...
4. Limited Edition/Collectors Editions. I'll buy some LE/CE's from Gamestop if they go OOS elsewhere before I can get a pre-order in. They also tend to be more careful with the LE/CE outer boxes and thus in better shape and aren't destroyed during shipping like a lot of online retailers. Still I tend to go with Best Buy w/ GCU mostly when possible.
5. Sales. While the sales are typically underwhelming there are always exceptions with some good sales. I take advantage of good sales to fill out my collection. Example: I build up my collections for systems when GS starts working on clearing/reducing stock for specific consoles. There have been some great Wii sales recently and I expect those to continue while sales for older PS3/X360 will start increasing. It's a perfect time to pick up titles on those systems.

There may be other reasons but those are the main reasons off the top of my head. I definitely don't shop there as fequently as I once did.

To sell Shulk amiibos.

(Relevant side note: I found Xenoblade at a Gamestop for an OK price. They can still be a force for good in the world, sometimes.)
