What is the PS5 Surprise/s?

That NxGamer and other techtubers keep alluding too...

I'm thinking of a few things....

A PS3/PS2/PS1 Emulator
BC games having auto enhanced textures and trophies as the patents suggest, maybe even a auto framecap unlocker as I've always suggested.
Infinity Cache or some Extra Vram for the OS and Media Features
Some really impressive OS feature that no one has thought of till now, like Sony's own game streaming service?

What do you think?

Can you post links to 'what they are alluding to'?

I think that in general features will be supported if they are widely appreciated and they add something recognized as valuable by the general public.
For example, Dual Sense's haptic feeback and adaptive triggers seem to be a game changer based on all the early impressions so far and it's very likely they will be huge hits among gamers.
With that kind of response developers are simply not going to ignore the features given that it's an extra that does not harm development on other platforms.
It's more likely that those who don't have them will be forced to catch up with an updated controller.
Same for the OS based features, if they end up being useless gimmicks they won't stick, if they improve quality of life a lot and they're widely appreciated they will end up becoming standards.
You're right. But a lot of multiplat developers ignore some of the more esoteric features of a platform to try to achieve parity and avoid delays that developing for those features could cause. If the features require additional creativity to implement you tend to not see adoption. Look at PS4 controller features like the lightbar and touchpad. Most games didn't do much with either of them. I'm surprised Sony brought the touchpad back. The speaker was also not used for much more than a novelty most of the time. But that speaker kinda sucked so that's probably part of that.

If you remove the side panel you'll actually see hundreds of little Sackboys moving really fast with the data on little backpacks, screaming "zog zog" each time they made a loop.

They are most likely talking about general performance, but we all know this is going to escalate to the high heavens with hype and then there's going to be a lot of disappointed people.

I think it could be either the create button (and what you can do with it) or the rumored PlayStation voice assistant.

Also, it should be mentioned that a lot of the people hinting at surprises are more on the technical side of game coverage and they seem to have both PS5's and XSX's for review. So the 'surprise' could be loading related, power-related (e.g. PS5 versions of games are only slightly less resolutiony than XSX versions) etc.

Nothing, a well designed system with balanced bottlenecks and a good ecosystem of games.

Like I said my opinion is that adoption is eventually driven by actual success and demand for certain features and cannot be considered just a matter of extra work because developers are constantly asked to do extra work the moment they develop for multiple platforms. (Example: multiplatform games all support docked and portable modes on Switch, that's a lot of extra work to optimize and deal with two systems with different hardware speeds but developers cannot afford to say "we only support docked mode because our game is developed for home consoles" because in the context of a Switch game that would simply be not acceptable given the feature set of that system).
Touchpad and lightbar on PS4 simply weren't big things that resonated particularly, the former was simply used like a glorified map button and the second a coloured health bar. No one asked or felt the need for more extensive support of the touch pad in games for example. Why? Because for all pratical purposes you can do the same stuff as efficiently with buttons.
On PS4 sharing pictures and videos were a big thing.
On PS5 based on the early feedback it seems like haptics and adaptive triggers might be huge because they add a lot to the experience, if this is true once gamers will try those features by themselves they will request support strongly on socials, message boards and whatever and developers will simply give the public what they want like it has always been the case. It simply becomes a way to make their product more appealing in the sense of "Hey you know, our game supports the latest and coolest tech everyeone is talking about". The return is bigger than the extra work required. Same for OS based features (there it should be even easier because everything should be already integrated in the dev tools).

Good point, they have been quiet about that create button...

I don't believe it will be anything groundbreaking.

if they included ps1-3 backwards compat i would literally shid all over the place
I would rather believe that MS came up with Dreamcast emulator and put it on Xbox/PC.

I heard if u press all for l/r buttons at the same time 4 times u can recover recently delted saves

PS5 soc is vertically stacked, using the extra space for infinity cache.

Pulling this out of my arse, and the chance of a stacked chip is 0.1%.

But I am pretty sure they have infinity cache in some form.

This is how these YouTubers get views and subscribers. It could be something awesome (which would be weird to keep a secret this close to launch) or something small like a QoL improvement, or do I dare say nothing at all. The one thing that can be counted on, is these youtube personalities will milk the intrigue for all it's worth; it's how they make money.

Reminds me of MBG, Crapgamer, and all the other fanboy youtubers with merciless constant video releases touting Sony wrecks Xbox, Xbox destroy's Sony etc with some claimed new secret sauce. Its a shame that people actually fall for it, there's no way some last minute ultra chip made its way in unbeknownst to the world.

If anything I'd say its along the technical side as DF alluded to, or some impressive system level integration of new features, that hopefully more devs adopt. I won't lie though, I'm excited for just about any new official stuff pertaining to the PS5, I wish the NDA's were a bit more lenient. I'm dying over here. I want more updates from those that have them. Next week is going to be so busy with constant game updates let alone system news, that I can see a lot of stuff getting buried. Just wish it was spread out more I guess.

I think it's about the BC of games that will be in the PS+ instant library thing.

Reason is a) Sony has been really quiet about it after the initial announcement even though it is, in my opinion, a cool idea and b) I don't think any preview tested those in BC mode so far even though that would be an obvious thing to cover.

Im guessing that some of those games will see improvements going beyond standard BC e.g. 60 FPS mode or so.

The video was a lot on controller, same with DF. So I think its controller related and I'm going to hazard a guess that its BC games supporting Dualsense functions maybe through the recent patches

They got your mind twisted ratso. That's how they do. Nothing gonna get buried...we got 11 days to spread it ;)
I hope so, but there are quite a few games releasing in the next couple of weeks, many of which I'm interested in, plus the next gen coverage and new details. I just fear next friday is going to be hectic, and not many big sites work over the weekend, it'll be mainly youtubers and influencers I suspect. Not that I mind.

Nice list, how about all PS1/PS2/PS3 games available via PSNOW to stream at 4K 60fps? Couldn't that be a solution to old gen BC?
For many people don't, because they don't have a good connection/have data cap on their connection, want to have it locally and inserting their PS1/PS2/PS3 disc or not having to pay again for them.

But hey, I'd at least bring back the digital 'PS1 Classics' for PS4 and PS5 as native games. If you bought them for PSP/Vita/PS3 don't need to buy them again. And then I'd release more 'PS2 Classics' for PS4 (so they would be available on PS5 too). And obviously these PS1 and PS2 games could be available on PS Now too.

Don't worry, they'll be working weekends. They aren't going to lose out on the traffic and as revenue. This isn't the norm, all hands on deck. The series x releases on Tuesday. They need the extra days. This is gonna be fun

I dont think its anything power related.
And PS1/PS2 and PS3 BC got shut down by Jim Ryan, so why keep it a secret

Must be OS related or something small, who knows. Alot of things that was supposed to happen or rumoured by these techyoutubers didnt happen.
Im happy to just play the PS5 lol

In these cases its almost always some "surprise" we all knew about already thats just not been officially announced.

Something like....

"A HDMI cable comes included in the box but it wasn't previously confirmed it is 1.5m long and actually a 2.1 cable"

It won't be some megaton.

nothing... literally nothing.

The surprise is that there is no real surprise and that its a weaker machine as opposed to Xbox series x no matter how you spin it lol. But hey Sony Ponies will believe and defend anything.

On another note - super excited to pick up 2 of my PS5s on the 12th along with my Series X.
