for me it has to to be Low Level Owl volume 1 and 2 by The Appleseed Cast.

for various reasons.

It's a pretty big undertaking for an artist to make a solid double album so I'm looking for the best of the best (aside from the obvious).

M83's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

White album will always be fantastic too, of course. I have more favorites but these stand out the most

I think the only one I've ever bought is Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness, which I enjoyed a great deal (for the most part), so I guess that one.

You really have to go back to 1990 or earlier for it to make much sense. You used to only have 40ish minutes of good sounding audio, with the CD you got up to 80. Many, many single albums of the last 20 years would have been doubles on LP (and many are - eg Elephant by The White Stripes).

Aren't these technically two different albums.
Just a double album sold at twice the price.

Either The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Genesis) or Out of the Blue (ELO).
Or maybe The Wall (Pink Floyd).
200 Motels (Zappa) certainly fits the bill.
Sign of The Times (Prince) might be just the ticket.
McCartney 2's original configuration often tickles my fancy.
The White Album? Don't mind if I do!
Todd (Rundgren) is certainly a lovely package as is his Something/Anything.

Don't get me started on double live albums, I'd be here all week.

That is not a double album
Of course it is.
Though London Calling was released as a double album it was only sold for about the price of a single album. The Clash's record label, CBS, at first denied the band's request for the album to be released as a double. In return CBS gave permission for the band to include a free 12-inch single that played at 33⅓ rpm. Ultimately, the planned 12-inch record became a second nine-track LP.

Tommy by The Who. Yes, I know the whole thing fits onto a single CD, but it was originally a double LP release so that's good enough for me.
If this counts, then it's my choice too.

I'm not a fan of double albums anyway, usually they are full of filler songs, and have very few good ones. Tommy is a strange case where not many individual songs are remarkable, but taken as a whole it's an incredible album.
