What is your favorite Michael Mann movie?

Easily Collateral. It may not be his "best", per se (that'd be Mohicans or Insider), but Collateral is a perfect and infinitely rewatchable movie for me. It's got that electric Cruise performance, his and Foxx's great chemistry, it's lean as fuck, and it's probably my favorite looking and sounding of all Mann''s films (which is saying a lot).

The love for Miami Vice in here makes me want to watch it again. I really don't remember anything about it, lol

Hated it in theaters, as did everyone else that was with me, and the movie remains a running joke in my friend group thanks to that day. That being said I've heard such positive talk about it here that I really need to rewatch it.

The Keep. 10% cheese.50% Tangerine Dream synthscape, 186% atmosphere.

Bonus - old and young Ian Mckellen

Agree with the OP. Collateral is his best by far, and Heat is also damn good so fits in nicely at 2nd.

Collateral is the best example I can think of when people talk about a "cool" movie. The whole thing oozes cool, from the characters to the soundtrack to the action.

For some reason I always remember the night I went and seen this back when I was in high school. I don't remember too many specific movie-going experiences but this one (particularly the nightclub shoot-out) stuck with me. Every time I go back and watch it it's like I'm back in time. Though it's by no means a period piece, it catches the early 00s perfectly.

edit:

Collateral would have been a classic is the ending was better handled and not your direct to video save the chick action flick nonsense with a taxi driver getting the better of a trained assassin in shooting.

Not to nitpick at one's opinions, but there is a reason for that.
Vincent is a trained shooter who always puts his shots in the center of the chest (and when possible goes for the full Mozambique Drill). The subway door blocked his shots because he shot at the center. Max was firing all willy nilly and a couple of his shots went through the windows to the side of each door.
That may not satisfy you, but it is what it is.

Bingo, Collateral is so fucking good.

Heat and Collateral. Miami Vice is really brought down by the entire romance thing. It drags down the entire middle of the film.

I think yes and no - the romance is quite poorly handled, but it also leads to two of the best scenes of the film; the boat ride and the dance in Cuba. And that ending montage.

Heat is easily my favorite. For the second place it get's trickier, Last of the Mohicans, Collateral and Insider are all contenders. I guess I'd go with Last of the Mohicans. Never seen Thief, but I'd like to now.

Collateral.

I've only seen Manhunter, Heat and Insider once so I need to get in some rewatches. Also still need to see Miami Vice, Ali and the Mohicans

Shocked at the lack of Thief mentions tbh

Thief is not a super well known movie tbh, especially in the face of Heat and Collateral. It's only with the Criterion release that it started to gain some real traction in recent years. The Insider being underrated and overlooked is a way, way bigger crime IMO.

So, when's that director's cut of Blackhat coming? Haven't gotten around to Blackhat since the director's cut is supposed to be much better.

Collateral and The Insider are great, but Heat has this ability to put me into a trance every time I watch it. It's a fucking mesmerising film that just oozes atmosphere and brings that 90s LA haze to life. It's a damn masterpiece.

Collateral continues to get better every time I watch it. It is so fucking good. There is so much at play, thematically, in that film that goes beyond the standard "Tom Cruise kills people" set up. The dialogue is top notch.

I can't even fault it for what some perceive to be "third act failings"; Max gets in plenty of cell phone conversation to warn Annie before the battery dies (plus note the guy who was talking on it extensively when Max had to take it from him). They delicately sidestepped that cliche, so I'm good with it.

It's probably one of the best crime/thriller/drama flicks in the last 20 years.

Heat would be a close second.

I refuse to acknowledge Black Hat, and Public Enemies. Pure fucking garbage.

As for the rest, haven't seen them in years. So it's just Heat, and Collateral for me.

Collateral > The Insider > Heat > Miami Vice > Ali > Last of.

Thinking about it, the only film I did not care for was Public Enemies. Even enjoyed Black Hat. But Collateral is his peak. It's lean, mean, and infinitely re watchable with Cruises best performance. In comparison, I feel most of his other films have quite a bit of bloat to them.

Suppose this is as good a thread as any to let people know that Heat: Remastered Director's Definitive Edition bluray preorder is $11.99 on Amazon right now.
