what is your favorite skateboarding game?

I love skateboarding games. I've always been fascinated by skateboarding, but never had the talent to do anything beyond simple fliptricks and grinds. I'm obsessed with trying to recreate realistic skating in every game I play. I used to turn my characters stats all the way down in Tony Hawk games and try to recreate lines from Flip Sorry or Yeah Right.

My favorite PS1 era game is Thrasher Skate & Destroy. It couldn't compete with Tony Hawk's popularity at the time and was mostly overlooked, but it was a much better game. It focused more on realism and had a pretty steep learning curve for performing advanced tricks. I remember some tricks even took up to 5 button presses to perform. Many of the levels came from real life spots such as the San Fran china banks, LA river or Embarcadero. The animations for the time were really well done too. I still think this game has the best looking wallrides in any skateboarding game. I also have to mention that the soundtrack was excellent. Every song in this game is a classic from the golden age of hip hop.

The PS2 generation saw the continued popularity of the Tony Hawk series. I played all of these games, even the awful THUG2. I think the series peaked at THPS4. But to be honest I was never a huge fan of Tony Hawk's approach of encouraging the longest combo by manualing and reverting your way to the next telephone wire grind. I did enjoy them in free skate mode, playing my own way.

In 2007, EA created the skateboarding game I always wanted but never thought I'd get. Playing the demo to Skate for the first time was one of those generation-defining moments that completely sold me on finally buying a 360. I couldn't believe how well they captured the feeling of skateboarding. Just pushing down the street and popping an Ollie up a curb felt satisfying. Doing simple grinds and flip tricks was actually challenging at first. The learning curve of the flick-it controls was brilliant and really did mirror the feeling of learning to skate in real life. The environments were realistically designed with hundreds of unique spots. They gave you so much control over how your tricks looked that you could perform the same trick on a spot 10 times and have it look different every time.

The sequels improved(and in some ways worsened) some of the core aspects of the first game. I personally think Skate 3's Hardcore mode is the best addition to the series and makes going back to the first two games pretty difficult. But I really group all 3 skate games together - they're all excellent skateboarding games and the best the genre has to offer. Most of all, My love for the Skate games is because they completely embrace the creativity of skateboarding. They understood the appeal of letting you skate spots how you want to, even letting you skate spots in ways that were never intended. It's one of the most creative game series I've ever played and I find them endlessly replayable.

I know EA Blackbox was pretty much gutted :( , but I hope we don't go too long before we get another realistic skateboarding game.

THPS2. Was one of the first few games I got on my Dreamcast. Probably after PSO in terms of hour put into that game. Soundtrack was awesome, the skating and tricks were just fun. I've not really found one I've liked since.

That's all?

For me:
SKATE2 > SKATE1 > THUG > THPS3 > THPS2 > THPS4.

Won't even consider Project 8 and Wasteland, by that time i was done with that series.

Of course with my nostalgia goggles i may find THPS2 better for the soundtrack and other meaningless stuff.

I really wish Rockstar would make a Thrasher Skate & Destroy sequel. I feel like there is definitely an open market for it with the Skate series pretty much killed by EA, and the Tony Hawk series has gone down the toilet. Is there even any upcoming skateboarding games? Thrasher Skate & Destroy was and is the best skateboarding game. Thrasher, Rockstar, and skateboarding all have only become more popular since it's original release. I could definitely see the skateboard community backing a game with Thrasher's name on it. Would really like to see a current or next gen version of it. It'd be cool if they stole the skate series controls too.

Also had the best music. Gangstarr, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Eric B and Rakim.

My favourite was Skate because those mechanics grabbed me a lot more than Tony Hawks, it had the sweet video mode, and the decent open world spots in addition to the parks. While Skate 2 added features the map was a lot less fun than Skate 1s. Dropped out before 3 because of too many games in a short time.

The series seems dead but I hope it eventually comes back in a few years.

Tony Hawk 2 is the only game in that series I played a bunch. Fun stuff.

first skate or die. Although I did play a ridiculous amount of the second one.

Probably because Ariel was in it:

THPS3 to THUG

Skate It on the Wii was also a pretty fun game. I haven't played any of the other Skate games though.

I know I'm in the minority but I loved THAW

I must also be in the minority. This game has introduced me to so many good songs, while having probably the best mechanics in the series. I had never enjoyed a tony hawk game so much (thug 2 was close though).

I'm not sure if i should choose Project 8, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, or American Wasteland because i liked all of them the same. I guess I'm gonna have to go with Underground 2 because they did a lot of funny stuff in that game and most of the missions were just wreck the town missions. Also i think in that game you were able to play as Benjamin Franklin who skated weird.

So yeah mine is Underground 2.

Tony Hawk American Wasteland. The online for that game on the OG Xbox was great. I don't want to know how many hours I put into it.

Tony hawk pro skater 4 ps2, online with the 56k late night hitting my first million trick watching the pros, finally getting in that top 5 or whatever.
Finding all these glitches slowly but surely, though I never made it into the aquarium at the zoo.
It was so much fun just exploring everything besides the actual amazing core gameplay.

It's a tie between THUG and Skate 2. THUG for pure nostalgia reasons. Skate 2 for gameplay and being able to capture the feeling of skating the best.

Me and a friend had some crazy imagination back in the day (about 10 or 11). We'd play Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 for hours, creating our own two-man RPG in free-skate.

Since then, Skate and Skate 3. Yet overall, Thrasher:Skate and Destroy left one of the biggest impressions in my experience with the Playstation and skateboarding games in general. Ragdoll physics on the PS1 and a policeman hoping to tazer me into a law-abiding skater? Shit, son.

THPS2 and THPS3 because of fond memories (skating causes earthquakes? fuck yeah!) but after finishing Skate 3 I have to say, that this game tops every other title when it comes to control scheme and awesome ragdoll physics. Also, in S3 bugs are a feature.

skate 2 and THPS2 stand out for me.

i play skate 2 with the THPS1 - THPS3 soundtrack so that's probably the best skating game then ;D

Tony hawks pro skater 2 will always be my favorite skating game. From the soundtrack to the levels and dat 900

Its still fun to play B^)

THUG is a close second though, incorporating a good story was a great thing but fuck that last level. I always struggled on the wall , doing a invert I think .

Definitely Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2.

I put so many hours into that it was ridiculous. Nothing but fond memories of both the PS1 and GBA versions.

I loved every Tony Hawk game up to and including THUG. Pro Skater 4 was the first time I ever played a game online, the first time I got a 1,000,000+ combo, and the first and only time I joined a "clan". All the messaging was done in a little chat using your controller back then, it was fun. So I have fond memories of that one.

Underground is probably the most complete, and probably my favourite, but not the one I spent the most time with.

Eh...., OK.

I liked the career mode.
I liked being able to go on foot and climb around.
I liked the stages.
I liked the customization of basically everything.
I didn't give a shit about the soundtrack, because i used a custom one since THPS4 anyway. (on Xbox)

The car thing was shit, but it was easily ignorable.

Maybe I need to play it again, it's been over 5 years. Fair enough though.

THPS2 and Skate 3.

Edit: Oh and THAW and THUG.

This. Even the demo level/s were a huge time sink, and I spent god-knows-how-long with the level creator once I got my hands on the full game. I was quite proud of a few of my creations.

THPS3....though, as a caveat, I've never played THPS2 (that I can remember).

THPS3 gives me so many good memories. And I can go back and play it now and....I just love it. I love it a lot.

I LOVED THUG! Such a great and innovative game for it's time, a shame that they had to run the series in the ground.

My other favorite would be Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4, i spent so much time playing that off and online. Project 8 was also a really good game, probaly the last good Tony Hawk game.

Project 8 had one of the best intros for any game ever, i loved that intro so much:'http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_0Wt1ytUoQ
