What is your favorite weapons-based fighting game?

Last Blade 2. It's like the Third Strike of weapon-based 2D fighting games. The best and also the most ignored. Hopefully the PS4 re-release coming soon will change that.

Soul Calibur is great and made a huge impact when it came out, but I think I'd have to go with SCII for my favorite.

I never thought of GG as a weapons game. All the characters do have some kind of weapon, though. I guess I always just saw it as a crazy DarkStalkers-like game and didn't pay any attention to the fact that everyone has a weapon.

Samurai Shodown V Special, Samurai Shodown II, Bushido Blade, Soul Caliber 2.

I haven't played Last Blade unfortunately.

Samurai Shodown was just an amazing series (SS 1, II, V Special). Fairly similar to Bushido Blade, the fact that you're using a weapon and not your hands and fists, seemed to matter. There were disarms in the early ones, a power up mechanic. It wasn't overly combo based, it came down to the fundamentals of fighting games to win. You had to manage distance well, timing.

While I loved Soul Caliber a lot, it didn't really feel like you were using weapons because they didn't do the kind of damage you expect weapons to do.

Ya know what? Honorable mention to Nidghogg for being such a simple but deceptively interesting fencing fighter in this day and age with some great music and a very unique world and art style. It came out with some hype but was forgotten rather quickly so I felt compelled to mention it as I don't want this game to be lost to the sands of time.

Bushido Blade

but it's probably my second favorite genre. So, I love games like Samurai Shodown, The Last Blade, Soul Calibur

Seconding this with an added hidden extra for those playing on either a Vita or a PSTV:

It supports 2 players with one controller.

Each player gets an analog stick, two of the D-Pad buttons work for jumping and stabbing, while the other uses the standard O and X buttons.

Last Blade 2 has such great characters design so that's it for me.

I also appreciate when fighting games throw every character they can into an installment like Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Street Fighter Alpha 3, KOF 2002 Unlimited Match, and Smash 4.

So I really enjoy the ridiculous roster of Samurai Shodown VI. I also enjoyed the eclectic soundtrack a lot. I just wish there were more than ten stages.

SoulCalibur V (followed by II and III) and Bushido Blade.

I never got into SNK fighters, but I really appreciate how pretty Last Blade 2 and some Samshos look.

Samurai Shodown (especially II and V Special) is my one true love. But Soulcalibur V and LB2 both make for close seconds.

Part of the reason I'm so ready to see SNK make a new SS or LB after KOFXIV is because SS is far and away my favorite SNK franchise, and LB is just an awesome game that deserves a continuance in some way.

Samurai Shodown 2 for the Neo Geo Pocket Color is the only one I've invested time in, so that one.
This also reminds me how awesome that little system was.
