Pretty much, it has nothing to do with sticking my fingers in my ears. Some people are just so annoying it was detrimental to my enjoyment of rather good threads.

Especially when absolutely nothing they've said has brought anything worthwhile to the table.

I completely disagree with the "cowards way out". I never ignore somebody I'm arguing with or has a different viewpoint. It's based on level of contribution and if I feel their absolute shit posts are tarnishing an otherwise enjoyable conversation time and time again, I'll ignore them.

Basically it's like finally fixing that shutter on your house that keeps banging against the side ever time it got windy.

Yeah i've never understood the 'ignore is cowardly' thing. It can be if you ignore someone because they have an opinion you dont like, but what about ignoring someone who posts untagged spoilers?

Ignoring solves nothing.

The person on my ignore list likes to post a bunch of shitty fanart when the opportunity arises. Asking him to stop hasn't solved the issue. Calling him out on it hasn't solved the issue. And the art itself doesn't go against the TOS. So using the ignore feature is the best option.

Yes. I often click on a thread to find that whoever posted it is on my ignore list.

I find ignore lists to be useful from the perspective that replying to a post can take much longer than skimming through a thread or list of topics so any shortcut telling me not to reply is welcome.

Then there are the people who tell the same stories repeatedly to anyone "willing" (as in unable to escape) to listen. They suck online, but they suck so much more in real life.

Don't ignore anyone. The only people on my ignore list are two posters who failed at avatar hosting and used sites that set off flags. Not a problem anymore because they're all on the gaf servers, but I left them there just because.

Yes, this. I've got two people on my ignore list and it's not because I want to avoid confrontation with them. One of them is a prolific poster on the Gaming side in the threads I like to read, and they just post the same noise over and over, thread after thread. It's garbage and after months of reading their posts, I concluded that they added nothing of value to my day so now I ignore them. The other poster I actually tend to agree with but they always post in such a rude, condescending manner that I just have no interest in conversing with them or seeing what they have to say anymore. There are lots of people I disagree with ideologically on this forum but I don't ignore them. Just the posters that don't add value to my browsing experience.

I use the ignore list, but I still read those posts. It's more of a flagging system for me. I use it when someone continually posts things I not only disagree with, but -- crucially -- people who have been repeatedly shamed and clearly live in a weird reality distortion field and no longer want to engage in actual conversation. So, really, the ignore list is just a reminder for me. "Take this post with a gigantic grain of salt, because even if you can't remember the poster's name, they have, at one point or another, proven themselves to be a complete asshole."

The only forums I post these days are SA and GAF and the moderation tends to be good enough so that the ignore-worthy posters are quickly banned.

If someone is aggravating you to the point you want to block them, and that someone is not banned; I'd assume (at least in that context) that that someone is a good poster, possibly a master troll, and you're a chump.

Easy there tiger, I really haven't ever ignored anyone. If someone is truly out of line or saying something incredibly offensive, usually a mod takes care of it. If not, oh well. It's a forum of discussion, some people may say things I don't like. That's just how it goes.
