No.Maybe I'm just cynical, but could the one year notice be so people quit early and they save face by not canning them all at once?

Realistically he's probably getting canned too.
A year of warning is a year more than most people get.
Nice to see your priorities are in order.

"I wanna be clear, this is strictly a business decision."
Yeah, no shit.
Please quiet down.

Honestly, the best thing a corporate employee can do is be prepared to be fired any day. It's really not personal. The employees showing outrage in the video need to internalize the issue. Why are they losing their job? What can they do to minimize the chances of this happening again? What skills do they have to market to another employer or begin their own endeavor.
Surely the savings will be passed along to customers

More like the product likely couldn't be produced in the current environment. A unionized workforce puts a huge amount of stress on the financials of a division. Moving to a non unionized workforce out of country will allow them to remain competitive with their competitors who are likely doing the same thing.
Sucks people will lose their jobs. But the company appears to be doing the transition in a manner that is much more sensitive to the employees.
That's why it's surprising they gave their employees such a lengthy notice.
And yeah in Mexico they don't have to pay their employees an American livable wage so they'll save a ton of money. Do they even have Unions in Mexico?
It happens in almost every established market. It's a good ole fashioned race to the bottom.
Carrier was recently allocated a $5.1 million Qualifying Advanced Energy Project tax credit (Project Credit) to expand production at its Indianapolis facility to meet increasing demand for its high-efficiency gas furnace line. Carrier was one of 12 domestic manufacturing businesses to receive a Project Credit, which was enacted by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and provides investment tax credits to build U.S. capabilities in clean energy manufacturing.
I am extremely proud of the hardworking Hoosiers across the state who are contributing to the continued growth of Americas manufacturing sector, said U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind. The tax credits will help these companies invest further in more good-paying manufacturing jobs right here in Indiana. When we invest in American manufacturing, we support a strong middle class.
I've had a position disappear while I was in the hiring process and a week away from starting because an expected contract didn't go through on the company's end. They explained the situation, apologized, and they let me know they'd contact me if anything else opened up. (It did, 9 months later.) These types of decisions have to be made- if the money's not there, it's not there. Its amazing how corporations can make higher level workers look at the rest as less than human.
The sad truth of it all, corporations have no responsibility what so ever to mankind, they have no social contract, they have no soul. Such an evil thing in the grand scheme of things. No responsibility, no care for fellow men, no nothing, the perfect wall to hide behind for the powerful to make evil choices.
They got the notice more than a year ahead? Lucky!
they...are?
why do you think they're doing this? it's so consumers can buy an air conditioner for a crazy low price
Wait, didn't they receive a large grant last year to expand this same facility?

Right?
A friend of mine worked for a company about 3 years ago that was letting go most of their staff, accept for a select few. The company knew about the lay offs months in advanced, but didn't say anything to employees until the day they were to be let go. The day they were laid off was 2 weeks before Christmas, too!
Welp, when we need to replace our A/C, then that is one company off the list.

5.1MM over 5 years ago. Carrier is a huge company, not some 10 person tech start up that can stretch out 5MM easily.

Fuck them. 1500 people lose their job so the board and a few shareholders can make more money.
If we truly had regulations then this shit like this would be illegal.
It was 2 years ago. And if that is small money for them, why take it?
Maybe I'm just cynical, but could the one year notice be so people quit early and they save face by not canning them all at once?
Layoffs at my current IT company occur the day they're decided upon. You don't even get a chance to say goodbye to your coworkers; you are merely collected by HR and then monitored by your supervisor while you hurriedly pack up your things and leave quietly.
I'm giving Carrier the nod here for giving these poor bastards such advanced warning.
